A male homosexual presented initially with bloody diarrhoea and a swelling in the left groin, which was unsuccessfully treated with erythromycin. Examination in hospital showed a rectal mass and an abscess in the left groin. Histological examination of the rectal mass and a positive lymphogranuloma complement fixation test result confirmed the diagnosis of lymphogranuloma venereum. This disease, although rare, should not be forgotten in the differential diagnosis of rectal problems in male homosexuals.

Erythrocytes, granulocytes and platelets from patients with paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) are abnormally sensitive to lysis by complement. We studied T-lymphocytes from PNH patients for abnormal complement lysis sensitivity. Specific antibodies to lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus were detected in sera of wild rodents trapped in different regions of Egypt. The highest proportion of positive sera (11.5%) was found in Sinaa Governorate of the Asian Continent, followed by Sharkia Governorate (5.6%) adjacent to Sinaa and Giza Governorate (1.8%). In Upper Egypt, however all 610 rodent sera collected in Aswan, Red sea Pernees and New Valley adjacent to Sudan were negative. The highest percentage of positive sera was in Rattus rattus frugivorus and Mus musculus species.

Reactivation of herpes simplex virus was prospectively studied in patients after microneurosurgical decompression of the trigeminal sensory root, a new operation for trigeminal neuralgia in which the nerve is not sectioned. Reactivation was detected in 28 (50%) of 56 patients. Virus was cultured from oropharyngeal secretions in 25 patients, and 21 patients developed cutaneous herpetic lesions. The neurologic complications of varicella-zoster (VZ) virus infections are manifested as zoster with or without CNS involvement, encephalomyelitis, or ocular involvement.
