Condom-use decision making among pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users in a pharmacy-delivered PrEP project in South Africa: Qualitative insights from PPrEPP-SA.

BackgroundCommunity pharmacies increasingly serve as access points for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in South Africa and understanding … ions regarding its ability to prevent STIs, contributing to reduced condom-use. Decisions to forego condoms were linked to trust in partners, relationship stability, cohabitation, and preferences for condomless physical intimacy. Condom-use was more likely in casual partnerships or when partner HIV status was unknown. Participants also expressed a strong …

Association between rectal douching and HIV acquisition: the mediating role of condom use and rectal bleeding in a national online sample of Chinese men who have sex with men.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have demonstrated that rectal douching (RD) is associated with HIV acquisition among men who have sex with men (MSM). However, the precise mechanism underlying the association between RD and HIV remains unclear. METHODS: We recruited participants over WeChat from October 2017 to October 2018. Respondents received mailed HIV self-testing kits, uploaded images of HIV self-test results and completed an online electronic questionnaire simultaneously. The questionnaire assessed sociodemographic characteristics, RD practices and sexual risk behaviours. HIV status was me

Using structural equation modelling to characterise multilevel socioecological predictors and mediators of condom use among transgender women and cisgender men who have sex with men in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Risks for condomless sex among transgender women and cisgender men who have sex with men (trans-WSM and cis-MSM, respectively) in the Philippines, where HIV recently became a national public health crisis, are shaped and exacerbated by various risk factors across multiple levels. METHODS: Between June 2018 and August 2019, we conducted a cross-sectional online study with 318 trans-WSM and cis-MSM respondents from Manila and Cebu cities. Structural equational modelling procedures were performed to determine direct, indirect and overall effects between condom use and latent variable

Racial Pride and Condom Use in Post-Incarcerated African-American Men Who Have Sex With Men and Women: Test of a Conceptual Model for the Men in Life Environments Intervention.

African-American men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) are among those most heavily impacted by HIV in the United States, and those who have histories of incarceration are at further risk of infection. The Men in Life Environments (MILE) HIV prevention intervention was developed to provide culturally appropriate skills-based education and support for African-American MSMW with recent histories of incarceration. The MILE's conceptual framework was informed by three theories: Theory of Reasoned Action and Planned Behavior, Critical Thinking and Cultural Affirmation Model, and Empowerment Th

A dose-response relationship between exposure to a large-scale HIV preventive intervention and consistent condom use with different sexual partners of female sex workers in southern India.

BACKGROUND: The Avahan Initiative, a large-scale HIV preventive intervention targeted to high-risk populations including female sex workers (FSWs), was initiated in 2003 in six high-prevalence states in India, including Karnataka. This study assessed if intervention exposure was associated with condom use with FSWs' sexual partners, including a dose-response relationship. METHODS: Data were from a cross-sectional study (2006-07) of 775 FSWs in three districts in Karnataka. Survey methods accounted for the complex cluster sampling design. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression was use

Informing school sex education using the stages of change construct: sexual behaviour and attitudes towards sexual activity and condom use of children aged 13-16 in England.

A survey of 3820 school children in England aged 13-16 years examined sexual activity using the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) Stages of Change. A quarter (26%) of teens were sexually experienced, 44.8 per cent did not use contraception and 48.9 per cent did not use condoms, every time. Past history of condom and contraceptive use, and partner willingness to use condoms were the best predictors of being in Action or Maintenance stage for condom use. Of virgins, 19.82 per cent were in Contemplation or Preparation stages for intercourse, and 85.4 per cent would use condoms every time. Sex educatio…

Adversarial Heterosexual Beliefs Moderate the Effects of Daily Emotion Modulation and Sex Motives on Condom Use Resistance: A 32-Day Daily Diary Study Among Young Men.

Condom use resistance (CUR), which involves tactics to obtain condomless sex with a partner who wishes to use condoms, is a common sexual risk behavior among heterosexual men. CUR is associated with physical and mental health consequences for those who experience it. Prior research has identified adversarial heterosexual beliefs (AHB) as a trait-level risk factor that increases the likelihood of CUR engagement. However, little is known about how AHB interact with daily factors (e.g., daily emotion modulation, sex motives) to influence CUR in real-life. The current study examined how the intera…

Associations of Sex Work Modality Classifications with Condom and Substance Use Behaviors Among Women Who Exchange Sex for Drugs or Money - Four Metropolitan U.S. Cities, 2016.

Women who exchange sex for drugs or money (WES) are disproportionately affected by HIV, particularly in the United States. We used latent class analysis to identify distinct groups, or classes, of sex work modalities (ways in which women find their exchange sex partners) and assess differences between class membership and behaviors associated with HIV transmission. Data are from the 2016 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) cycle focused on heterosexuals at increased risk for HIV infection (HET). Four cities participated in a pilot study exploring a subset of WES. All participants (n =
