[Hydatid cyst of the diaphragm. Apropos of a case].

We report a case of hydatid cyst of diaphragma in a 70 year-old male, who was admitted to hospital in emergency for right basithoracic pain, aggravated by cough and deep breathing. Laboratory tests were normal. Standard roentgenographs showed a right-sided subpulmonic opacity. Pleural aspiration fluid revealed hemorrhagic pleural effusion. Lung scintigraphy showed and hypoperfused area at the base. Abdominal echography evidenced an hepatic cyst referred to the diaphragma. Thoracoabdominal CT-scans indicated a calcium-loaded mass on the postero-lateral aspect of the right lobe of liver. Surgica

Gout presenting as a popliteal cyst. A case of pseudothrombophlebitis.

A 64-year-old man with progressive swelling and erythema of his right calf preceded by dull aching in the right popliteal fossa was presumed to have deep vein thrombophlebitis. A venogram revealed normal circulation in the right lower leg, and an ultrasound examination of the right popliteal fossa revealed a 2 X 5-cm popliteal cyst. Fluid aspirated from the cyst confirmed the diagnosis of gout. Popliteal cysts associated with gout are rare, and those that rupture, leak, dissect, or enlarge can mimic thrombophlebitis (a phenomenon known as pseudothrombophlebitis). Thus, the primary care physici

Periprosthetic Joint Infection Occurring Following a Femoral Subcutaneous Cyst: A Rare Complication Post-Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Herein, we present a rare case of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) which was triggered by an infection with a latent subcutaneous cyst on the thigh and occurred in a strange course following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). An 87-year-old female underwent right TKA followed by left TKA 5 months later. Six weeks after left TKA, a painful subcutaneous induration appeared in the left medial thigh. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 30∗50-mm multifocal mass. The cystic fluid was brown and cloudy, indicating an infected cyst. Oral antimicrobial therapy was initiated for 7 days. Nine weeks afte

Omentalisation of perinephric pseudocysts in a cat.

An 11-year-old male domestic shorthaired cat was presented with behavioural disturbances and abdominal distension of two days' duration. Haemobartonella felis was found on routine haematology and serum biochemistry showed mild azotaemia. Abdominocentesis revealed a transudate. Bilateral perinephric fluid accumulations were observed on ultrasonography and chronic nephrosclerosis was diagnosed on needle biopsies of the kidney. A celiotomy with resection of the major portion of both cyst walls was performed. The omentum was extended along the floor of the abdomen, across the ventral aspect of bot

Cervicothoracic Arachnoid Cyst Causing Cervical Myelopathy: A Case Report.

Several types of intraspinal cyst develop within the spinal canal from the craniovertebral junction to the sacrum. These lesions occur in both children and adults. Arachnoid cysts are one of them and are more frequent in the paediatric population, being a relatively uncommon lesion in adults. The arachnoid cyst may be located intradurally or extradurally. The intradural type may be congenital or from spinal trauma, infection or spondylosis. Although intradural arachnoid cysts are often asymptomatic, they may give early symptoms when they exist with synchronous pathologies constricting the spin

Comparison of the protoscolocidal effectiveness of hypertonic saline, povidone-iodine and albendazole solutions in an experimental lung hydatid cyst model.

Secondary hydatidosis is an important problem encountered during the surgical treatment of hydatid cysts. This study describes an experimental model of secondary hydatidosis by cyst inoculation, used to explore whether simultaneous inoculation of protoscolocidal agents could prevent secondary hydatidosis. Fertile cyst fluid was injected into the pleural space of rabbits alone (group 1, n = 8), and in combination with 2% albendazole solution (group 2, n = 8), 20% hypertonic saline (group 3, n = 8) or 10% povidone-iodine (group 4, n = 8). Computed tomography imaging of the thorax, indirect haema…

Computed tomography characteristics of equine paranasal sinus cysts.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is commonly used to investigate equine paranasal sinus disease, however, only limited information is available in the literature about the detailed CT appearance of equine paranasal sinus cysts. OBJECTIVES: To investigate if paranasal sinus cysts have specific characteristics in CT images that allow differentiation from other sinus diseases. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective observational study. METHODS: Evaluation and comparison of CT studies of eight horses with surgically and/or histopathologically confirmed paranasal sinus cysts and 10 horses with other co

Impact of the cystic fibrosis mutation F508del-CFTR on renal cyst formation and growth.

In autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), the protein product of the gene defective in cystic fibrosis (CF), plays a crucial role in fluid accumulation, which promotes cyst swelling. Several studies have identified individuals afflicted by both ADPKD and CF. Two studies suggested that CF mutations might attenuate the severity of ADPKD, whereas a third found no evidence of a protective effect. In this study, we investigated the impact of the commonest CF mutation F508del-CFTR on the formation and growth of renal cysts. A

Benign glial cysts of the pineal gland: unusual imaging characteristics with histologic correlation.

PURPOSE: To describe the spectrum of MR and CT findings in clinically symptomatic pineal cysts and to determine whether there are certain diagnostic imaging features that allow one to distinguish a benign pineal cyst from other neoplasms of the pineal region. METHODS: MR and CT scans of 19 patients with clinically symptomatic pineal cysts were retrospectively reviewed. Age range was 15 to 46 years with a mean age of 28 years. There were five male and 14 female patients. RESULTS: Presenting features included headache (15 patients), diplopia (four), nausea and vomiting (four), papilledema (fou

Do consensus indications for resection in branch duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm predict malignancy? A study of 147 patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Recent consensus guidelines suggest that presence of > or =1 of the following is an indication for resection (IR) of branch duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN-Br): cyst-related symptoms, main pancreatic duct diameter > or =10 mm, cyst size > or =30 mm, intramural nodules, or cyst fluid cytology suspicious/positive for malignancy. Among a cohort of patients with IPMN-Br we determined if the consensus IR (CIR), presence of multifocal IPMN-Br, or growth of cyst size on follow-up predict malignancy. METHODS: We identified 147 patients with IPMN-Br of whom 66 u…

Continuous decompression treatment of unicameral bone cyst in a small-breed dog: A case report.

OBJECTIVE: To report the long-term outcomes of continuous decompression for repairing a unicameral bone cyst in a dog. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. ANIMAL: A 1-year-old Maltese-Poodle mixed breed dog presented with left forelimb lameness. METHODS: A well-defined cyst in the left humeral condyle was detected on radiography and computed tomography. A lateral surgical approach revealed the cyst in the distal metaphysis of the left humerus. The attained cyst fluid and incisional biopsy led to the diagnosis of unicameral bone cyst. To prevent cyst expansion and recurrence, aspiration, open curetta…

Mobile Myxopapillary Ependymoma with Associated Filum Terminale Cyst.

BACKGROUND: Intradural ependymal cysts are benign, fluid-filled cysts usually situated along the ventral surface of the spinal cord. There are previous reports of 19 intradural cysts in the literature, including one cyst of the filum terminale. Here, we report for the first time the presence of a radiographically occult filum terminale cyst associated with a myxopapillary ependymoma. We propose that mobility of the tumor may provide indirect evidence of the presence of a cyst. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 65-year-old male patient presented with a homogenously enhancing ovoid mass measuring 25 mm × 10

When Silence Speaks: A Perforated Hepatic Cyst, Intact Omental Cyst, and Cholelithiasis.

A 39-year-old man from an echinococcosis-endemic region presented with acute left upper quadrant pain. Imaging revealed cholelithiasis, a hepatic and a large abdominal cystic masses, and significant free peritoneal fluid. Urgent laparotomy unexpectedly disclosed three concurrent pathologies: chronic calculous cholecystitis, a perforated hepatic hydatid cyst, and an intact omental hydatid cyst. The exact source of his symptoms remains uncertain. This case highlighted the diagnostic challenge of coexisting surgical diseases in endemic regions.

Cystic parathyroid adenoma within a multinodular goiter: a rare cause of primary hyperparathyroidism.

Parathyroid cysts are uncommon lesions that do not have a specific sonographic appearance. We report a rare case of a functionally active cystic parathyroid adenoma as a cause of primary hyperparathyroidism and discuss the difficulties associated with the diagnosis. In this case, the association with a multinodular goiter made preoperative differentiation from thyroid cysts difficult. Demonstration of a high intact parathyroid hormone level in the aspirated cyst fluid was critical for the correct diagnosis.

Cytologic findings in aspirated hydatid fluid.

A case of hydatid disease of the liver diagnosed by accidental needle aspiration of a cyst is reported. The patient presented with multiple symptoms, whose cause could not be readily determined. Since an amoebic abscess of the tender and enlarged liver was one possibility, that organ was aspirated with an 18-gauge needle, producing about 200 mL of slightly turbid fluid; the patient went into anaphylactic shock following the procedure, but was revived. Smears of the fluid showed brood capsules, free scolices and scattered hooklets pathognomonic of Echinococcus. The cytologic diagnosis of echino

Surgical management of benign noninfected urachal cysts in adult patients: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities of the urachus include the patent urachus, cysts, sinus, and fistula. Each of these entities represents a failure of complete obliteration of the urachus. Contrary to other urachus anomalies, urachal cysts are usually small and silent unless they are infected. The diagnosis is often made during childhood. A benign noninfected urachal cyst discovered in adulthood is a rare condition. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein we report two cases of benign noninfected urachal cysts in adults. The first case is a 26-year-old Tunisian white man who presented with complaints of clear flui

Recurrent Inactive Hydatid Cyst of the Liver Causing Restrictive Pulmonary Physiology.

Hydatid and alveolar cysts are formed by the helminths Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis, respectively, which are endemic to pastoral areas, and are more commonly found in South America, the Mediterranean, Russia, and China. Hydatid cysts can cause bacteremia, form abscesses, or cause mass effect by compressing surrounding organs. Strategies to prevent such complications include benzimidazoles, surgical resection, and Puncture, Aspiration, Injection and Re-aspiration (PAIR) procedure. A 71-year-old Egyptian man with remote history of Echinococcus infection one year status
