We report a case of septic arthritis of the hip associated with atopic dermatitis. A 15-year female felt a pain in the right hip with unknown cause on May 11, 1998. The pain subsequently became aggravated, and she was admitted to our hospital on May 18. She has had atopic dermatitis since 4 years of age. She showed generalized dermatitis with desquamation and numerous scratch marks. A culture of both skin and joint fluid revealed Staphylococcus aureus. Physical examination revealed tenderness in Scarpa triangle and restricted range of motion. Immunological serology showed an increase in eosino

BACKGROUND: Adult atopic dermatitis (AD) with severe and refractory eruptions on the face, neck, and upper trunk, although quite rare in western countries, has increased in Japan.
OBJECTIVE: We have tried to clarify the possible causative factors for this particular type of AD, predominantly seen in Japan.
METHODS: Eighty-seven AD patients (37 men and 50 women) who had severe and refractory facial and neck lesions were patch tested with topical medicaments, cosmetics, and skin-management products.
RESULTS: Thirty-seven (42. 5%) patients showed positive reactions to more than one of those pr

Trichophyton rubrum has been implicated as a potential trigger in flares of atopic dermatitis. We describe a patient with atopic dermatitis who presented with a history of multiple flares and concurrent acute tinea pedis and onychomycosis. Symptoms of atopic dermatitis and culture-positive acute infection with T. rubrum resolved during each flare using systemic antifungals. Flares of atopic dermatitis may be triggered by acute T. rubrum infections. Antifungal therapy should be considered in these patients.

PURPOSE: Clinical experience suggests that atopic dermatitis is a considerable risk factor in penetrating keratoplasty. The scientific evidence, however, has been equivocal. Systemic cyclosporin A reduces the threat of immune reactions and simultaneously improves atopic dermatitis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate to what extent and for how long systemic cyclosporin A improves graft prognosis in patients with atopic dermatitis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between November 1986 and July 1994, 173 penetrating keratoplasties were performed on keratoconus patients without skin disease (I). Fif

BACKGROUND: Superantigenic exotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus and their specific IgE antibodies are thought to be important precipitating factors of atopic dermatitis (AD), but there are few reports evaluating these 2 factors at the same time.
OBJECTIVE: We examined whether the presence of the exotoxins sampled from the skin of patients with AD and the levels of anti-exotoxin IgE antibodies in their sera correlated with their severity of AD.
METHODS: Patients with mild-to-severe AD, 1 to 22 years of age, were evaluated by using Leicester's scoring system. Specific IgE antibodies aga

Persons with atopic dermatitis run a considerable risk of developing hand eczema when exposed to occupational agents that are a burden to the skin. This also pertains to those with a history of skin atopy in childhood. This review presents estimates of the risk of developing hand eczema and examines the evidence for an effect modification by skin atopy on exposure. Skin atopy at least doubles the effects of irritant exposure and, thus, doubles the risk in occupations where hand eczema is a common problem. On the basis of this evidence, guidelines for occupational counseling can be given. Furth

A six-month old male infant with severe atopic dermatitis was admitted with hypoalbuminemia, oliguria and cyanosis of the extremities. There was marked edema and generalized eczema with foul, yellowish exudates. The patient's major clinical manifestations were attributed to the loss of albumin through the skin. Although atopic dermatitis is a common disease in children, here we want to show that systemic disturbances may arise from such condition, describe the total care given the patient, and emphasize the wholistic approach in managing cases of severe atopic dermatitis. Intensive treatment w

Skin eosinophilia induced by grass pollen or platelet-activating factor (PAF) was investigated in patients with allergic and nonallergic asthma and atopic dermatitis (AD) and in normal control subjects. Intracutaneous injection of PAF resulted in positive immediate skin reactions in all tested individuals. Since most of the patients with allergic and nonallergic asthma and eczema under investigation were characterized by a peripheral blood eosinophilia, we investigated whether PAF should be capable of mobilizing blood eosinophils to the skin of patients with nonallergic asthma and AD using the

The study comprised 40 children of both sexes aged from 2 to 12 years, 22 suffering from bronchial asthma and 18 suffering from atopic dermatitis. Twenty healthy children of comparable age and sex to the patients were studied as controls. All the children were subjected to full history including dietetic questionnaire, thorough examination, and to estimation of serum IgE, serum ceruloplasmin, and zinc and copper levels in both serum and hairs. The mean concentrations of zinc in serum and hairs were respectively 70.3 +/- 13.2 micrograms/100 ml and 167.5 +/- 23.0 micrograms/gm in asthmatic cases

Leukocyte chemotaxis was studied in 11 patients with severe childhood onset atopic dermatitis at a time when their disease was relatively quiescent. Pyoderma had been an important complication of the dermatitis in these patients. The chemotactic responsiveness of patient neutrophils and monocytes was on the average not significantly different from that of healthy control subjects, although three patients were identified who had significantly impaired responses. No correlation between IgE levels and leukocyte chemotaxis was observed. Because excessive amounts of histamine have been recovered fr

Disturbances of skin barrier function occur in several skin diseases, e.g., atopic dermatitis (AD), irritant/allergic contact dermatitis (ICD, ACD). Skin barrier damage triggers the production of cytokines that stimulate lipogenesis which may also cause inflammatory processes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a topical skin lipid mixture in the treatment of ICD, ACD and AD. 580 consecutive patients suffering from ICD, ACD or AD were treated with a skin lipid mixture containing ceramide-3 and patented nanoparticles. Patients received the lipid mixture alone or in combinatio

INTRODUCTION: Disgust is an adaptive basic emotion that promotes avoidance of potential pathogen threats through aversive affect and rejection responses. In chronic inflammatory skin diseases, visible skin alterations may function as contamination cues, yet the role of individual differences in disgust sensitivity and self-disgust (comprising personal and behavioral dimensions) remains largely unexplored.
METHODS: We examined disgust sensitivity and self-disgust in adults with atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, contrasting scores with non-clinical norms and evaluating links to clinical and psyc

Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a long-lasting, inflammatory, and itchy skin disease related to asthma, hay fever, and a family history of the condition. It is the most common chronic skin disease in children, affecting 18% of 7-year-olds. The prevalence of AD in children in the United States is 17.2%, which is comparable to that in Europe and Japan. Greater socioeconomic groupings, fewer families, and metropolitan areas all have higher AD prevalence rates. It is thought that a mix of environmental and genetic factors produces the condition. The gene that codes for the skin matrix protein filaggrin

BACKGROUND: Bovine colostrum (BC) shows immunomodulatory properties, which could be beneficial in the management of chronic immune-mediated diseases such as canine atopic dermatitis (cAD).
OBJECTIVE: To assess if a BC supplementation affects selected immune variables and clinical signs in cAD.
ANIMALS: Twenty client-owned dogs with non-seasonal, environmentally induced cAD were enrolled in this prospective, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: After a 2-week adaptation to standardised feeding, the dogs were divided into two groups, receiving either a placebo or BC
