[Current possibilities of using antimyocotic drugs in the treatment of various skin disorders].

Current possibilities of using antimycotic drugs in the treatment of various skin disorders. The purpose of this article is to review the literature data on the therapeutic protocols and the results of using some antimycotics in different skin diseases. In addition to the antimycotic action, particular antifungal drugs such as itraconazole, ketoconazole and terbinafine exhibit anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the synthesis of 5-lipooxygenase metabolites. As these metabolites are involved in a number of inflammatory and immunoreactive processes the dual action of the drugs may be suitab

Skin diseases associated with Malassezia species.

The yeasts of the genus Malassezia have been associated with a number of diseases affecting the human skin, such as pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia (Pityrosporum) folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and--less commonly--with other dermatologic disorders such as confluent and reticulated papillomatosis, onychomycosis, and transient acantholytic dermatosis. Although Malassezia yeasts are a part of the normal microflora, under certain conditions they can cause superficial skin infection. The study of the clinical role of Malassezia species has been sur

Eyelid dermatitis: an evaluation of 447 patients.

BACKGROUND: Eyelids can be affected by various types of dermatitis that are often difficult to diagnose. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to establish some guidelines for a correct diagnosis. METHODS: A total of 447 patients treated at 12 research units for eczema or other inflammatory dermatitis located on the eyelids were invited to complete a questionnaire. When necessary, patch tests with haptens of the standard series from Gruppo Italiano di Ricerca sulle Dermatiti da Contatto e Ambientali della Società Italiana di Dermatologia e Venereologia (SIDEV-GIRDCA) were performed. RESULTS:

Touraine-Solente-Gole syndrome: The complete form needs to be recognized.

The primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy (HOA) (pachydermoperiostosis) is a rare hereditary disease characterized by skin manifestations (pachydermia), digital clubbing and proliferation of periosteum (periostitis) with sub-periosteal new bone formation. We describe here a case who presented with seborrheic dermatitis and joint pain of both hands on work up matched satisfactorily with the complete form of primary HOA. The identification of secondary form being relatively common among clinicians and hence the importance of recognizing the primary form, which is a difficult to treat condition i

Contact urticaria from an oxygen mask in a military pilot.

Contact urticaria is a transient, wheal-and-flare response at the site of contact with a substance. We report a case of a military fighter pilot, with a background history of seborrheic dermatitis and steroid-induced facial skin atrophy, who subsequently developed contact urticaria from an oxygen facemask. Skin protection products such as barrier creams were used to try and minimize the provocation of contact urticaria from the oxygen mask whenever he flew, but without success. He was eventually permanently restricted from flying fighter aircraft.

Survey of common cutaneous lesions in healthy infants at the well baby clinic.

OBJECTIVE: Survey the prevalence of cutaneous disorders in infants at the well baby clinic. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This prospective study was conducted on 500 infants, aged between 1 month and 1-year-old. RESULTS: Mongolian spot and nevus simplex were the two most common congenital lesions in the present study. Seborrheic dermatitis was the most frequent skin findings arisen in infancy (apart from the neonatal period) and was on the third rank in overall cutaneous lesions. CONCLUSION: Skin infections especially tinea versicolor were easily missed.

Optical coherence tomography in diagnosis of inflammatory scalp disorders.

BACKGROUND: The common inflammatory scalp disorders share similar clinical manifestations, and patient work up require invasive, undesirable diagnostic procedures like biopsy to ensure correct diagnosis. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive high-resolution imaging modality that has found a valuable tool to assist in the diagnose and evaluation of different skin diseases. OBJECTIVES: To describe the structural and vascular dynamic OCT (D-OCT) findings of inflammatory scalp disorders including scalp psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis and contact dermatitis and to compare trichosc

[Malassezia related diseases].

The genus Malassezia is now divided into eleven species. Different species initiate or aggravate different skin diseases. In seborroheic dermatitis, M. restricta play an important role, while in atopic dermatitis, M. globosa and/or M. restricta are major cutaneous microflora. M. globosa is a causative species of tinea versicolor, and this species is also a causative species of malassezia folliculitis. We should therefore obtain better knowledge of the ecological and pathogenic roles of malassezia.
