Matching voice and face identity from static images.

Previous research has suggested that people are unable to correctly choose which unfamiliar voice and static image of a face belong to the same person. Here, we present evidence that people can perform this task with greater than chance accuracy. In Experiment 1, participants saw photographs of two, same-gender models, while simultaneously listening to a voice recording of one of the models pictured in the photographs and chose which of the two faces they thought belonged to the same model as the recorded voice. We included three conditions: (a) the visual stimuli were frontal headshots (inclu

Stuck in a rut: perseverative response tendencies and the neuroticism-distress relationship.

Clinical views of neuroticism-linked distress often make reference to the perseverative sorts of mental processes that reinforce such experiences. The goal of the present 7 studies, involving 488 undergraduate participants, was to directly examine such perseverative processes. Individual differences in response perseveration were operationalized in terms of choice reaction time difficulties switching (vs. repeating) responses across consecutive trials. Response perseveration interacted with neuroticism in predicting negative emotion, dissatisfaction with life, and displays of negative emotion

Orthorexia Nervosa Risk and Psychological Correlates in Higher-Education Dance Students.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa has been increasingly examined in performance-oriented populations; however, evidence in higher-education dance students remains limited, particularly across multiple dance disciplines and with integrated psychological assessment. OBJECTIVE: To examine orthorexia nervosa distribution among higher-education dance students across 4 disciplines (classical dance, contemporary, flamenco, and Spanish dance) and to analyse its association with psychological distress and body dissatisfaction. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 318 students enrolled in

A systematic review of fear, stigma, and mental health outcomes of pandemics.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected the mental health of people globally. Despite substantial research on the short-term psychological impact of COVID-19, its long-term consequences on mental health remain relatively unexplored. AIMS: We aimed to examine mental health literature on prior outbreaks to provide recommendations for developing effective strategies to mitigate the short- and long-term psychological impact of the current pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of 41 studies to analyze the adverse impact of the following epidemics and pandemics on th

Characteristics of young rural Chinese suicides: a psychological autopsy study.

BACKGROUND: Patterns of suicide rates in China differ in many ways from those in the West. This study aimed to identify the risk factors characteristic for young rural Chinese suicides. METHOD: This was a case-control psychological autopsy (PA) study. The samples were suicides and living controls (both aged 15-34 years) from 16 rural counties of China. We interviewed two informants for each suicide and each control with pretested and validated instruments to estimate psychosocial, psychiatric and other risk factors for suicides. RESULTS: The prevalence of mental disorders was higher among th

Unspoken Challenges: Sexual Health in Sexual and Gender Minority People With Multiple Sclerosis.

Sexual health is an integral part of overall well-being, encompassing emotional, psychological, and physical aspects that profoundly influence quality of life. Despite the prevalence of sexual dysfunction (SD) among people with multiple sclerosis (MS), it is too frequently underreported and undertreated. Sexual and gender minority (SGM) people with MS, in particular, may face stigma, discrimination, and clinician hesitancy that can bar access to necessary sexual health care. Recognizing SGM identity can help clinicians deliver more inclusive general and sexual health care, including but not li

Comorbidity of Asperger syndrome and gender identity disorder.

The case of a 35-year-old biological woman with Asperger syndrome (AS) and gender identity disorder (GID) fulfilling DSM-IV criteria is reported. Against the background of recently emerging theories of cognitive male pattern underlying autism we present additional psychological assessments in order to discuss any possible interaction or discrimination between AS and GID. Whilst we explain GID as a secondary feature of AS, we examine the assumption of the necessity of treating GID in AS as a primary GID in accordance with international standards. We consider the treatment of GID as compelling,

The new identitarians: How the behavioral movement and psychology in general have been ideologically captured.

Recent developments within the mental health professions suggest a growing ideological capture by left-wing identitarian frameworks, with significant implications for clinical ethics, scientific integrity, and public health. This article argues that the increasing fusion of psychotherapy with political activism, particularly through the spread of decolonial therapy and related approaches, has contributed to discriminatory practices. This has led to identity-based discrimination toward Jewish clinicians and clients, specifically those who identify as Zionist. We argue that these frameworks impo

Cognitive load and individual differences as drivers of health-related misinformation: A signal detection approach.

The global spread of health-related misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to understand the psychological mechanisms that make individuals susceptible to health-related misinformation. This study examined the impact of cognitive load and individual differences on susceptibility to COVID-19 misinformation using a Signal Detection Theory framework. A sample of 634 university students evaluated true and false COVID-19 headlines under working memory load and no-load conditions, while also completing standardized assessments of cognitive reflection, epistemically unwa

The law on oncological oblivion in the Italian and European context: How to best uphold the cancer patients' rights to privacy and self-determination?

INTRODUCTION: Italy's oncological oblivion law codifies the right for cancer survivors to choose not to disclose their medical history under certain conditions, after 10 years from the end of treatment, or 5 years if diagnosed under the age of 21, in order to prevent discrimination in social, work, and professional opportunities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article compares Italy's law with other European countries', aiming to analyze its implementation 1-year post-enactment and its medicolegal implications. Official sources and research from platforms like Google Scholar and PubMed were used

Ultra-Weak Photon Emission Demonstrates Specificity for Anxiety over Pain in Cannabis-Treated Chronic Neuropathic Pain: A Biomarker Validation Study.

Chronic pain management increasingly seeks objective biomarkers to complement subjective assessments. Ultra-weak photon emission (UPE), measurable via gas discharge visualization (GDV), has been proposed as a potential biomarker for various health conditions. However, the specificity of UPE measurements for pain versus comorbid conditions remains unexplored. This prospective cohort study followed 200 adults with electrodiagnostically confirmed neuropathic pain receiving cannabis therapy for 48 months. Assessments included the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for pain, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-

Hazardous alcohol consumption and other barriers to antiviral treatment among hepatitis C positive people receiving opioid maintenance treatment.

Amongst people on opioid maintenance treatment (OMT), chronic hepatitis C (HCV) is common but infrequently treated. Numerous barriers, including misuse of alcohol may limit efforts at anti-viral treatment. The aim of this study was to define barriers, including alcohol misuse, to the effective treatment of HCV amongst OMT recipients. Ninety-four OMT patients completed the 3-item Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C). A semi-structured interview was used in 53 subjects to assess alcohol use in detail, psychological health, discrimination and access to HCV treatment. Feasibility of

Stigma and discrimination among children affected by leprosy: a systematic review of a skin-related neglected tropical disease.

Little is known about the stigma and discrimination children with leprosy are subject to and the subsequent impact on their psychological well-being. The aim of this study is to systematically review the literature for evidence that closes this knowledge gap and informs practice. In line with a PRISMA-P Protocol (PROSPERO CRD420251089128), we conducted a systematic review, underpinned by an extensive search strategy. There was no inclusion restriction on methodology, time period, country, or language. Data extraction was completed through a double-review process, which was guided by a deductiv

Racism-related stress, health outcomes, substance use, and PrEP attitudes among Asian sexual minority men.

Racial discrimination has been linked to decreased psychological well-being and physical health. Most Asian Americans in the United States reported discrimination against Asians as a major problem and that inadequate attention is given to racial inequities affecting Asians living in the US. We described the association of racism-related stress and health outcomes among Asian American sexual minority men. We hypothesized that greater racism-related stress is associated with poor general and oral health, increased substance use, and unfavorable attitudes about PrEP. We conducted a secondary anal

Disturbance of somatotopic spatial cognition and extra-territorial pain in carpal tunnel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Several studies on carpal tunnel syndrome have reported pain that exists beyond the median nerve territory of the affected hand. However, the mechanism is unknown. PURPOSE: We investigated the cause of extra-territorial pain by the analysis of clinical assessments and cortical activity using magnetoencephalography. METHODS: To compare patients with and without extra-territorial pain, fourteen patients with carpal tunnel syndrome were assessed using clinical examination, such as patients' profile, paresthesia, physical tests, and psychological tests. The physical assessment includ

Ethnic identity in context of ethnic discrimination: When does gender and other-group orientation increase risk for depressive symptoms for immigrant-origin young adults?

OBJECTIVES: Ethnic discrimination increases risk for depressive symptoms, but less is known about factors that influence the impact of this cultural challenge on psychological adjustment for immigrant-origin college students. Sociocultural identity development is especially relevant during emerging adulthood. Studies examining exacerbating or buffering impacts of ethnic identity have yielded mixed results. The current study examines conditions under which one aspect of ethnic identity, affirmation/belonging, moderates the impact of perceived ethnic discrimination stress on depressive symptoms.

Factor and item-response analysis DSM-IV criteria for abuse of and dependence on cannabis, cocaine, hallucinogens, sedatives, stimulants and opioids.

AIMS: This paper explored, in a population-based sample of males, the factorial structure of criteria for substance abuse and dependence, and compared qualitatively the performance of these criteria across drug categories using item-response theory (IRT). DESIGN: Marginal maximum likelihood was used to explore the factor structure of criteria within drug classes, and a two-parameter IRT model was used to determine how the difficulty and discrimination of individual criteria differ across drug classes. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 4234 males born from 1940 to 1974 from the population-based Virgin

Clinical case study of abbreviated cognitive behavioral therapy through an intersectional lens for women health-care workers during the era of COVID-19.

The unprecedented demands of the coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) have imposed a significant degree of psychological distress on women health-care workers (WHCWs). Women comprise 76% of the health-care workforce in the United States and are subject to experience higher psychosocial ramifications in the pandemic era due to gender disparities. Accordingly, women who are dually mothers may be navigating complex interactions of role strain by managing abnormally high parental and occupational workloads. The psychological toll is exacerbated for women holding multiple oppressed identities across
