A 2-year-old neutered male dog with a history of urinary incontinence, recurrent urinary tract infections, and unilateral cryptorchidism was presented with an acute onset of perineal swelling. Urinary contrast studies revealed a urothelial lined structure in the perineum. Surgical resection of 80% to 90% of this structure, suspected to be a congenital urethral diverticulum, was successful.

Zenker's diverticulum occurs at the dorsal pharyngoesophageal junction through Killian's dehiscence and is caused by increased intrabolus pressure. Symptomatic disease most frequently affects male elderly patients. Primary symptom is oropharyngeal dysphagia, as well as regurgitation of undigested food, halitosis, and chronic aspiration. A barium swallow study is performed to confirm diagnosis. Treatment options for symptomatic patients include open surgery, as well as transoral rigid or flexible endoscopic procedures. Transoral procedures have become the main treatment approach over the past y…

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate a combined robotic-assisted laparoscopic technique with concomitant cystoscopy use for excision of a urachal diverticulum to ensure complete resection of diverticulum and bladder cuff.
DESIGN: Step-by-step demonstration and explanation of the procedure using video illustration. Institutional Review Board/Ethics Committee ruled that approval was not required for this case report; however, patient consent was obtained (Canadian Task Force Classification III).
SETTING: Vesicourachal diverticula account for approximately 3% to 5% of congenital urachal anomalies. A…

A Kommerell diverticulum (KD) may predispose toward aortic aneurysm, dissection, or rupture, although they are primarily asymptomatic. We report a case of an aberrant left subclavian artery arising from a KD in a right-side aortic arch. The lesions were successfully treated by an endovascular approach involving Amplatzer vascular plug embolization of the aberrant left subclavian artery and endovascular repair of the KD.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate our results in treating Zenker's diverticulum via the transcervical approach, and to compare our experiences with a recent systematic review of both open and endoscopic approaches to the pharyngeal pouch.
METHOD: An audit yielded 41 consecutive cases of Zenker's diverticulum treated between 2003 and 2013.
RESULTS: All 41 patients underwent transcervical cricopharyngeal myotomy; 29 sacs also required 'inversion'. The median and mean length of hospital stay was 1 night and 2.5 nights respectively. The recurrence rate was 2.4 per cent and the complication rate was 9.8 per…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Meckel diverticulum can present with a variety of complications but is often found incidentally during other surgical procedures. The role of laparoscopy in the management of Meckel diverticulum is established. We reviewed our experience with complicated cases of Meckel diverticulum in children managed with laparoscopy.
METHODS: A 15-year retrospective chart review revealed 14 cases of complicated Meckel diverticulum managed with laparoscopy. Incidentally found Meckel diverticulum and cases done by laparotomy were excluded. Ages varied from 2 years to 16 years old. …

Adult intussusception caused by an inverted Meckel diverticulum is rare. We report a 39-year-old Turkish man with intussusception due to Meckel diverticulitis. Ileoileal intussusception was suggested by computed tomography. Exploration revealed ileoileal intussusception with Meckel diverticulum. A diverticulectomy with small bowel resection was performed.

Zenker's diverticulum or pharyngeal pouch is a herniation of pharyngeal mucosa through a defect located on the posterior pharyngeal wall, in an area of natural weakness between the 2 parts of the inferior constrictor muscles. The incidence of presentation of pharyngeal pouch to an ear, nose, throat (ENT) specialist was estimated as 0.47 cases per 100,000 per year. It could be a rare cause of dysphagia in elderly patients, associated with regurgitation, chronic cough, aspiration, and weight loss. The etiology still unknown, but theories focus upon structural or physiological disorders of the cr…

Meckel's diverticulum, being considered as the most frequent malformation of the digestive tract, has been largely presented in scientific papers, but a complete physiopathological mechanism for its natural history has not been yet described. We have studied the nervous system and the differences observed in eight Meckel's diverticulums with enteric or ectopic gastric mucosa, using specific immunohistochemical markers. It has been noted a significantly higher density of myenteric nerve fibers in areas with enteric mucosa compared with the areas with gastric heterotopias, while the transition z…

BACKGROUND: A Meckel's diverticulum is a remnant of the primitive bowel and the yolk sac which occurs in 1-5% of the population. It causes problems in only very few people.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 39-year-old man developed acute abdominal pain after eating two oranges. The cause of the pain was found during a lower abdominal laparotomy - the small bowel was obstructed by a Meckel's diverticulum and a phytobezoar composed of orange fibres. Both were removed surgically.
CONCLUSION: A symptomatic Meckel's diverticulum should be removed; however, in an asymptomatic Meckel's diverticulum this approac…

Urethral diverticula are a rare entity. Carcinoma in a urethral diverticulum is a particularly unusual finding with only a little over 200 cases in the reported literature. Adenocarcinoma is the most common carcinoma to occur in a urethral diverticulum. To our knowledge, there are only a handful of cases of signet ring cell adenocarcimona of the urethra and no cases of signet ring adenocarcinoma found in a urethral diverticulum. We present a case report of an incidentally found signet ring cell adenocarcinoma of a female urethral diverticulum.

Female urethral diverticulum is a disorder that affects 1% to 6% of women. Women with diverticula may present with a variety of nonspecific genitourinary complaints, making the diagnosis challenging. Diagnosis is made by physical examination and can be confirmed with cystourethroscopy and/or radiographic imaging. Asymptomatic women can be managed conservatively, whereas treatment for symptomatic women usually involves a diverticulectomy. Potential complications from diverticulectomy include diverticulum recurrence, de novo stress incontinence, urethrovaginal fistula, urethral stricture, and re…

PURPOSE: To report a patient with a ruptured diverticulum of Kommerell and to discuss treatment options and complications.
CASE REPORT: An 82-year-old woman with no prior medical history was diagnosed with a ruptured aneurysmal proximal aberrant right subclavian artery (diverticulum of Kommerell). She was treated with a carotid-subclavian bypass, a thoracic aortic stent-graft covering both subclavian orifices, and a vascular plug in the proximal right subclavian artery. After an initially uneventful recovery, the patient developed delayed ischemic esophageal ulcerations and subsequent perfora…

This study was conducted to compare the clinicopathologic characteristics of incidentally found and symptomatic cases of Meckels diverticulum with the aim of arriving at a recommendation regarding the management of incidental cases. A retrospective chart review was performed over a period of 24 years. Incidental group had 52 patients and symptomatic group had 128 patients(71%). Obstruction (42.9%) was the most common presentation, followed by diverticulitis (41.4%). Gastrointestinal hemorrhage was found in 33.6% and was commonly associated with obstruction. If the diverticulum has umbilical co…

Aneurysms of the right aortic arch with an aberrant left subclavian artery are rare. We report the case of a 77-year-old woman with a Kommerell's diverticulum aneurysm, who underwent a successful hybrid repair, combining surgical off-pump bypass of the aortic arch vessels followed by endovascular aneurysm repair.
