Frictional Behavior of van der Waals Heterojunctions Driven by Elastic Pinning at Edges and Corners.

Due to the significant friction and wear in micro- and nano-electromechanical systems (M/NEMS), achieving reliable sliding in M/NEMS remains a critical challenge. Structural superlubricity with ultralow friction and wear in van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions is a promising route to realize long-lifetime sliding in M/NEMS for practical applications. However, the fundamental origin of friction in vdW heterojunctions remains elusive. In this paper, through detailed experimental measurements by adopting various slider geometries and cracked substrates, we demonstrate that friction is dominated by

Lightweight Condition-Constrained Salient Object Detection Based on Elastic Pixel Difference Convolution.

Visual degradation caused by adverse meteorological conditions, such as low light and rain, significantly hinders the deployment of salient object detection (SOD) on edge devices. Existing methods often rely on computationally expensive restoration preprocessing or complex feature stacking, making real-time inference difficult. To address these challenges, this article proposes a novel lightweight model, termed the robust elastic adaptive difference network (READNet). The core innovation lies in a novel elastic pixel differential convolution operator, which flexibly captures microscopic gradie

Novel elastic nanovesicular hydrogel system: advancing metronidazole delivery for effective periodontitis management.

OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis, characterized by chronic gingival inflammation driven by polymicrobial biofilm formation, presents a significant therapeutic challenge due to the inherent difficulty of antimicrobial penetration through the biofilm matrix and limited drug retention. METHODS: To address these challenges, this study developed a metronidazole-loaded spanlastic-based mucoadhesive hydrogel (MTZ-SPLG) for direct intra-pocket delivery, designed to overcome biofilm barriers and prolong drug residence time. The spanlastics (SPL) formulation achieved optimal characteristics (93% EE, 0.168 PDI,

Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing (ESIN) in Diaphyseal Fractures of Both Forearm Bones in Children.

Background Diaphyseal fractures of both forearm bones are common in children. Although most cases can be managed conservatively, surgical treatment is indicated for unstable, irreducible, open, or complicated fractures. Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) has emerged as a minimally invasive option with favorable functional and radiological outcomes. Methods We conducted a retrospective descriptive study including 38 children younger than 15 years with diaphyseal fractures of both forearm bones treated with ESIN in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Moulay Ali Cherif Regional Hospi

Outcome of Retrograde Titanium Elastic Nailing System in Shaft of Humerus Fractures: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Humeral shaft fractures account for approximately 1-3% of all fractures and present a unique surgical challenge due to the proximity of the radial nerve. Retrograde titanium elastic nailing system (TENS) has gained increasing acceptance as a minimally invasive, load-sharing implant for managing such fractures, particularly in adolescents and young adults. This case series evaluates the functional and radiological outcomes of retrograde TENS in humeral shaft fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a series of 10 patients (age range 19-55 years; M:F = 7:3) treated with retrog

The effect of elastic deformation and rigid displacement soft tissue artefact on glenohumeral axial rotation.

Measurement of axial rotation of the humerus using marker-based motion capture is compromised due to soft tissue artefact. The aim of this study was to quantify the elastic deformation of markers on the humerus and evaluate the combined effects of elastic deformation and rigid displacement of the markers on humeral kinematics during axial rotation. Thirteen wheelchair users performed active humeral internal rotation whilst a Vicon motion capture system tracked 12 retro-reflective markers placed on the arm. Elastic deformation was quantified using the Optimal Common Shape Technique (OCST) and O

Development of Transferable Coarse-Grained Lipid Models with Optimized Structural and Elastic Membrane Properties.

Lipid membranes play crucial roles in cellular functions and offer diverse engineering applications. Studying their properties is critical but computationally demanding through atomistic simulations. In this work, we develop coarse-grained (CG) models for phosphocholine lipids, aimed at balancing computational efficiency and predictive accuracy with chemical and temperature transferability. We introduce chargeless CG beads with 2:1 or 3:1 mapping and optimize the force fields through a combination of systematic and accelerated approaches that integrate particle swarm optimization algorithm wit

Experimental validation and simulation of a U-Shaped elastic beam robot for stable running locomotion.

This paper presents an innovative terrestrial robot employing a vibration-based locomotion system powered by a single DC motor with an eccentric rotating mass. The robot, composed of a U-shaped aluminum elastic beam and lightweight wooden feet, attains steady mobility by synchronizing torsional vibrations with centrifugal forces. Experimental and simulated analyses were performed at three angular velocities (ω1 = 125.66 rad/s, ω2 = 251.33 rad/s, ω3 = 376.99 rad/s) to assess stability, deviation, velocity, and hopping performance. The results indicated that a rise in angular velocity significan

One-Dimensional Organic Lead Bromide Elastic Crystals with Strong Electron-Phonon Coupling.

Two novel one-dimensional (1D) lead halide elastic crystals, [Pb2Br4(DMA)2]n (1) (DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide) and [Pb2Br4(DMF)2]n (2) (DMF … compound 1. The large Stokes shift and broad fwhm of compound 1 may be attributed to its excellent elasticity, as this elasticity allows the molecule's self-trapped exciton state to undergo greater structural distortion. It is suggested that 1D organic lead halide elastic crystals could be promising candidates for emerging applications in efficient NIR ligh …

Fabrication of Elastic Color-Changing Films-Elastomer Films Incorporating Mechanochromic Fluorenylidene-Acridane.

A pressure-sensitive elastomer film incorporating fluorenylidene-acridane (FA) in its folded conformation was successfully developed for use in pressure-sensitive applications. The elastomer network was swollen with acetone, creating space to accommodate FA molecules. Although FA dissolved in acetone and adopted a twisted conformer, a solvent exchange process with methanol facilitated the reprecipitation of FA in its yellow folded conformation within the elastomer matrix. Confocal and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the incorporation of FA in its folded form within the matrix, while fil

Elastance May Determine the Neuromuscular Blockade Effect on Mortality in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

Rationale: Patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have a reduction in functional lung volume that results in increased respiratory system elastance (Ers); however, the extent of this increase varies by patient. Patients with high Ers are at risk of excess lung-distending pressures and may derive greater clinical benefit from neuromuscular blockade (NMB). Objectives: We sought to evaluate whether the effect of early NMB administration on mortality varies according to baseline physiological and biological biomarkers of lung injury, including Ers. Methods: We conducted a seconda

Enhancing Stability of Pediatric Femoral Fractures Treated with Elastic Nail Using an External Fixator.

Background: Diaphyseal femoral fractures in children older than 5 years and before adolescence are usually treated surgically. The literature describes several surgical techniques; however, we present an additional minimally invasive technique that combines the use of elastic intramedullary nails and a uniplanar external fixator as an optional solution for managing more complex cases. Method: This was a retrospective review of four children aged 9-12 years who suffered from unstable diaphyseal femoral fractures and were admitted to our institution. Results: We treated four children between the

3D printing of Y-27632 enhanced elastic hydrogel conduits for peripheral nerve repair.

Nerve guide conduits provide an advanced tool for peripheral nerve repair, but their efficacy remains limited due to suboptimal axon regeneration. Y-27632, a ROCK inhibitor, has the potential to promote axon regeneration and functional restoration. Here, we show a Y-27632 enhanced elastic hydrogel conduit for effective nerve repair. The conduit comprised of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)/silk fibroin methacryloyl (SF-MA) hydrogels with Y-27632 loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanoparticles, is rapidly fabricated by a continuous 3D printing process. The drug Y-2

The higher cellular elastic modulus of the nucleus pulposus with degenerative changes in the cervical intervertebral discs.

PURPOSE: Our study aims to explore the association between the elastic modulus of nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) and degenerative changes in the cervical intervertebral discs (IVDs). METHODS: Primary human NPCs were isolated from 21 degenerative IVDs that underwent anterior cervical decompression and fusion. The clinical degeneration degree of IVDs were assessed by a qualitative approach based on MRIs and a quantitative method based on the radiographs after all elastic modulus of NPCs were measured. On the basis of the degree of cervical IVDs degeneration, subjects were divided into mild (n = 6

A bilinear model for the elastic response of hydrated lipid bilayers under normal pressure difference.

The elasticity of phospholipid membranes as a function of hydration was investigated using coarse-grained molecular simulations. Multilamellar membranes consist of two or more lipid bilayers separated by a thin layer of water, a system commonly found in cell membranes that provides surface tension in the alveoli of the lungs and on cartilaginous surfaces of synovial joints. The objective was to quantify the response of such systems to compression in the direction perpendicular to the membranes as a function of the amount of water between the bilayers or hydration of the system. The present stu…

Evaluating peritoneal elastic laminal invasion to improve stratification of patients with pT3 gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: Elastic laminal invasion (ELI), defined as tumor invasion beyond the peritoneal elastic lamina, may affect gastric cancer (GC) prognosis, though limited data exist on this relationship. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed representative pathological slides from 396 patients with pT3 or pT4a GC who underwent curative resection to assess the association between ELI and relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: The 5-year RFS of pT3 GC with negative ELI was 85.9%, which was better than the 55.9% of that of ELI-positive pT3 (P < 0.001) or pT4a (51.3%) GC (P < 0

Effect of successful percutaneous balloon mitral valvotomy on aortic elastic properties in mitral stenosis.

Background: Aortic elastic properties in mitral stenosis have not been much studied. To date, only a few studies have studied the effect of percutaneous balloon mitral valvotomy (BMV) on aortic elastic properties. This was the first study done in Indian subcontinent in a tertiary care hospital in South India studying the effect of BMV on aortic stiffness in severe rheumatic mitral stenosis. We studied the relationship between aortic elastic properties and mitral stenosis and the effect of BMV on the same. Results: A total of thirty-two patients satisfying the criteria for severe mitral stenosi
