Congenital anomalies in the teratological collection of Museum Vrolik in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. IV: closure defects of the neural tube.

The Museum Vrolik collection of the Department of Anatomy and Embryology of the University of Amsterdam, founded by Gerardus Vrolik (1775-1859) and his son Willem Vrolik (1801-1863), consists of more than 5,000 specimens of human and animal anatomy, embryology, pathology, and congenital anomalies. Recently, the collection of congenital anomalies, comprising 360 specimens, was recatalogued and redescribed according to contemporary morphogenetic opinions. The original descriptions, as far as preserved, were compared with the clinical and additional findings. Based on the classification by closur…

Isolated Frontosphenoidal Suture Craniosynostosis: Treatment Approaches and Literature Review for a Unique Condition.

Craniosynostosis isolated to the frontosphenoidal suture is an extremely rare entity, distinct from other types of synostotic anterior plagiocephaly, from the embryologic, phenotypic and endocranial morphology viewpoints. Embryologically, the sphenoid bone has two origins, which morphogenetically represent 2 distinct subunits. Depending on the region involved, unique craniofacial features involving the forehead, temporal region and orbit will be demonstrated. A case of frontosphenoidal suture synostosis depicting these features is presented. In addition, a literature review was performed and a

Dolichoectasia of the internal carotid artery terminus, posterior communicating artery, and posterior cerebral artery: The embryonic caudal ramus internal carotid segmental vulnerability legacy.

Dolichoectasia of the distal internal carotid artery, posterior communication artery (PCoA) and posterior cerebral artery is an extremely rare abnormality. Dolichoectasia of the internal carotid artery, PCoA and the P1 segment of posterior cerebral artery can be postulated its pathogenesis by the embryological perspective basis from caudal ramus of the internal carotid artery terminus. The pathogenesis and treatment strategy are not well established. We reviewed and proposed embryological perspective, pathogenesis, clinical setting, radiological findings and management of this rare malformatio

A variant branching pattern of the aortic arch: a case report.

Variant aortic arch branching pattern may occur with different embryological mechanisms. We report on a variant aortic arch branching in a 41-year old Tanzanian male cadaver during dissection practice. The left common carotid artery was seen originating from the root of the brachiocephalic trunk and the left vertebral artery from the arch of the aorta proximal to the origin of the left subclavian artery. We discuss the relative literature, its potential embryologic development and clinical significance.

Foregut cystic developmental malformation: new taxonomy and classification--unifying embryopathological concepts.

Foregut cystic developmental malformations are rare developmental anomalies. The problems inherent to these malformations are their presentation across specialties that include embryology, anatomy, pathology, thoracic foregut surgery, pediatric surgery and general abdominal surgery. The direct consequence of this variation has resulted in diverse terminology, classification and a failure to identify the correlation. The article aims to summarize and unify the embryological concepts of foregut cystic malformation, to suggest a generic title to the various groups of these interrelated disorders …

Undescended Ectopic Parathyroid Adenoma Within Ectopic Cervical Thymus in the Carotid Sheath.

BACKGROUND: Due to their shared embryologic origin, the association between ectopic parathyroid glands and the thymus is well recognized. Abnormal implantation of thymic tissue during embryological migration to the mediastinum can lead to ectopic cervical thymus. METHODS: A 33-year-old woman with persistent primary hyperparathyroidism (89 pg/mL) was referred following failed parathyroidectomy. Preoperative 4D computed topography identified soft tissue in the right carotid sheath corresponding to an area of increased uptake on sestamibi imaging. Revision parathyroidectomy was performed. Oocytes with aggregates of smooth endoplasmic reticulum may not affect reproductive outcomes in split IVF-ICSI insemination: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of smooth endoplasmic reticulum aggregates (SERa) in oocytes on embryological outcomes and clinical and neonatal outcomes during split IVF-ICSI cycles. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using clinical data from January 2020 to December 2023 at the Reproductive Medicine Center of Hainan Women and Children's Medical Center. Patients were divided into SERa+ and SERa- cycles based on the visibility of SERa after the removal of cumulus cells. Basic patient characteristics, embryological outcomes, clinical and neonatal outcomes were compared betwee

Unraveling Pancreatic Segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Limited pancreatic resections are increasingly performed, but the rate of postoperative fistula is higher than after classical resections. Pancreatic segmentation, anatomically and radiologically identifiable, may theoretically help the surgeon removing selected anatomical portions with their own segmental pancreatic duct and thus might decrease the postoperative fistula rate. We aimed at systematically and comprehensively reviewing the previously proposed pancreatic segmentations and discuss their relevance and limitations. METHODS: PubMed database was searched for articles inves

Evaluation and Management of Preaxial Polydactyly.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide a current review of the embryology, classification, evaluation, surgical management, and clinical outcomes related to preaxial polydactyly. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies include a proposed embryologic link between preaxial polydactyly and other congenital abnormalities, an evaluation of long-term postsurgical outcomes, and an examination of important predictors for postsurgical outcomes. Preaxial polydactyly, while relatively uncommon, is a complex congenital hand abnormality that requires careful preoperative classification and proper surgical intervention tim…

Müllerian anomalies.

The reproductive organs in both males and females consist of gonads, internal ductal structures, and external genitalia. Normal sexual diffe … ent options include nonsurgical as well as surgical intervention. This chapter serves to review the embryology and development of the reproductive system and to describe common genital tract anomalies. Details of surgical or nonsurgical correction of these anomalies are presented.

Unraveling the Pancreatic Anlagen: Validating a Manual Dissection Protocol with Immunohistochemical Staining for Pancreatic Polypeptide in a Human Cadaver Study.

Background: The pancreas develops from two independent buds that fuse to form the adult organ. Ontogeny has largely been neglected in pancreatic surgery. This study aims to demonstrate that the adult pancreas can still be divided into morphogenetic units based on its embryological compartments and connective tissue borders for potential therapeutic purposes. Methods: Ten donor bodies (four female, six male, aged 73-101 years) were used. Manual dissection, guided by the common bile duct to locate the embryological fusion plane, was performed to divide the pancreatic tissue. Immunohistochemical

The Story Retold: The Kocher Manoeuvre.

The Kocher manoeuvre is used for mobilization of the duodenum and head of the pancreas and bears the name of Theodor Kocher, who published it in 1903. We describe the embryology of the duodenum and pancreas, relating it to surgical anatomy applied during the procedure. Finally, we present the key points of the procedure, providing more insights into the anatomical structures that are mainly involved.

Technical considerations of coarctation stenting in double-barreled aorta - A persistent fifth arch mimic.

The double-barreled aorta connecting the ascending aorta and descending aorta caudal to the normal fourth aortic arch has fascinated the interests of cardiac morphologists for over a century. This condition is commonly associated with coarctation. While the controversies surrounding the embryology of the double-barreled aorta have settled down, we present a case-based illustration of the technical aspects of coarctation stenting peculiar to this condition.

Anterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery Strokes Based on Variant Vascular Anatomy of the Posterior Circulation: Clinical Deficits and Imaging Territories.

We report imaging findings of 3 patients with anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) infarcts who presented with atypical clinical findings of cerebellar strokes. AICA strokes are rare, and diagnosis can be difficult because of the high variability of the posterior circulation vascular anatomy. We describe the embryology and variant anatomy of AICA so that clinicians can understand and recognize the patterns of these infarcts.

A tale of two "tails:" A curiosity revisited.

A human tail or a caudal appendage is a rare condition with preconceived notions and stigmata. They could be either true tails or "pseudotails" based on their embryology. Clinically, they are considered as a marker of occult spinal dysraphism. We report two such cases with tethering of cord, one of which was associated with a lipomeningomyelocele. These patients are in need of meticulous evaluation and appropriate management.

Multiple urethral anomalies: Parameatal urethral cyst, penile curvature, incomplete hypospadiac anterior duplication of the urethra and distal hipospadias.

The male genitourinary system is quite complex. There are numerous known anomalies of the male urethra either as isolated cases or in combination with other disorders. An improved understanding of the embryology and anatomy of the normal male urethral development might help explain the causes of the various urethral abnormalities. We contribute to the etiology of congenital anomalies with this multiple urethral anomalies case.

Skull base anatomy and CSF rhinorrhea.

The skull base is an intricate interface between the cranium and face allowing the passageway of vital structures. Anatomic conceptualization forms the platform for surgical approaches and solutions to skull base pathology. Understanding embryogenesis provides further depth into the pathophysiology of congenital defects. This chapter aims to highlight skull base anatomy and embryology along with cerebrospinal fluid physiology and diagnostic evaluation of cerebrospinal fluid leaks.

[Granulosa cell tumors: a case located in the broad ligament of the uterus with normal ovaries].

Granulosa cell tumours are relatively rare ovarian tumors. The incidence was 0.9 cases per 100,000 women per year. We describe a quite uncommon granulosa tumour found in the broad ligament. The patient was a 25-year-old, white woman, gravida 4, para 2. Surgical treatment was tumourectomy with homolateral salpingo-oophorectomy. From this observation, embryology, clinical and paraclinical aspects, treatment and prognosis of these tumours are reviewed.
