Acute ulcerative colitis elevates the risk of plaque rupture in patients with atherosclerosis, potentially triggering acute cardiovascular events. Clinical treatment strategies capable of simultaneously alleviating colitis and stabilizing atherosclerotic plaques are still lacking. Extracellular traps have been observed within atherosclerotic plaques in patients with myocardial ischemia. Given the crucial role of macrophages in the formation and progression of plaques, whether macrophage extracellular traps (METs) significantly contribute to the stability of atherosclerotic (AS) plaques during …

Arterial hypertension (AH) and heart failure (HF) are age-associated conditions usually accompanied by chronic inflammation. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NET) are important during inflammation and left ventricular remodeling but their functions in HF are poorly studied. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) that fulfill anti-inflammatory functions are also not studied during HF. The goal of this work is to evaluate the balance between proinflammatory NET-producing neutrophils and anti-inflammatory MDSC in pathogenesis of AH and HF in elder rats. Wistar and spontaneously hypertensive rats …

BACKGROUND: Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have been found to promote inflammatory responses and exacerbate tissue damage, as well as to be strongly associated with the development of acute rejection in kidney transplantation. Taking measures against NETs is important for the treatment of acute rejection in kidney transplantation.
METHODS: We used the kidney ransplantation acute rejection dataset GSE50058 as a basis for identifying biomarkers associated with the regulation of NETs therein and constructing a diagnostic model using WGCNA and four machine learning algorithms. We also expl…

Acute on chronic liver failure (ACLF) is a critical condition with a high mortality rate; however, the underlying mechanisms driving its progression remain poorly understood. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), a recently discovered mechanism of cell death, may play a significant role in this process. Although NETs has been found in a variety of liver diseases, its specific mechanism in regulating the development of ACLF is not clear. Here, we sought to identify key NETs-related genes associate with ACLF. In this study, gene expression data from 24 whole blood samples, including 7 healthy d…

BACKGROUND: As a chronic inflammatory skin disease, atopic dermatitis (AD) results from immune dysregulation, epidermal barrier dysfunction, and inflammatory microenvironment. Although long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are implicated in inflammatory diseases, the role of the DSG1-AS1/miR-125b-5p/HMGA2 axis in AD and its link to NETs formation remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: This research sought to explore the role of the DSG1-AS1/miR-125b-5p/HMGA2 axis in AD pathogenesis, focusing on its regulation of keratinocyte inflammation, neutrophil recruitment, and NET…

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) is a group of rare but potentially life-threatening autoimmune diseases that affect small to medium-sized blood vessels. Recent evidence highlights the critical role of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in the pathophysiology of AAV. NETs, which are web-like structures composed of DNA and antimicrobial proteins, contribute to vascular damage and immune activation. In patients with AAV, excessive or impaired clearance of NETs can trigger autoantibody production and exacerbate inflammation. This literature review demonst…

BACKGROUND: Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) play a key role in thrombus formation in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the existing detection and observation methods for NETs are limited in their ability to provide quantitative, convenient, and accurate descriptions of in situ NETs. Therefore, establishing a quantitative description of the relationship between NETs and thrombosis remains a challenge.
OBJECTIVE: We employed morphological observations of blood cells and statistical analyses to investigate the correlation between the NETs/neutrophilic segmented gr…

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis as a neglected tropical disease (NTD) is caused by the inoculation of Leishmania parasites via the bite of phlebotomine sand flies. After an infected bite, a series of innate and adaptive immune responses occurs, among which neutrophils can be mentioned as the initiators. Among the multiple functions of these fighting cells, neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) were studied in the presence of Leishmania major promastigotes and salivary gland homogenates (SGH) of Phlebotomus papatasi alone, and in combination to mimic natural conditions of transmission.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Glu504Lys polymorphism in the aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) gene is closely associated with myocardial ischaemia/reperfusion injury (I/RI). The effects of ALDH2 on neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation (i.e. NETosis) during I/RI remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate the role of ALDH2 in NETosis in the pathogenesis of myocardial I/RI.
METHODS: The mouse model of myocardial I/RI was constructed on wild-type, ALDH2 knockout, peptidylarginine deiminase 4 (Pad4) knockout, and ALDH2/PAD4 double knockout mice. Overall, 308 ST-elevation myocardial infarct

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major cause of blindness and is characterized by dysfunction of the retinal microvasculature. Neutrophil stasis, resulting in retinal inflammation and the occlusion of retinal microvessels, is a key mechanism driving DR. These plugging neutrophils subsequently release neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which further disrupts the retinal vasculature. Nevertheless, the primary catalyst for NETs extrusion in the retinal microenvironment under diabetic conditions remains unidentified. In recent studies, cellular communication network factor 1 (CCN1) h…
