Multiple primary cancers in a single individual are rare when more than three distinct lesions are considered. This article reports a patient who developed four separate primary cancers: squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx, squamous carcinoma of the lung, adenocarcinoma of the breast, and adenocarcinoma of the colon. No specific hereditary syndrome could be identified from this patient's pedigree. Individuals with a history of multiple cancers should have a complete family history evaluation and follow-up for development of subsequent primaries.

The recently established virus family Flaviviridae contains at least 68 recognized members. Sixty-six of these viruses were tested by cross-neutralization in cell cultures. Flaviviruses were separated into eight complexes [tick-borne encephalitis (12 viruses), Rio Bravo (six), Japanese encephalitis (10), Tyuleniy (three), Ntaya (five), Uganda S (four), dengue (four) and Modoc (five)] containing 49 viruses; 17 other viruses were not sufficiently related to warrant inclusion in any of these complexes.

Six patients are described in whom facial diplegia occurred in the first year of life, with subsequent development of facioscapulohumeral dystrophy. All had severe progressive disability prior to adolescence. Facial involvement did not include extraocular muscles. All six patients had a sensorineural hearing loss. Evidence of a mildly affected parent was found in three families. Progressive and severe facioscapulohumeral dystrophy accompanied by facial diplegia and sensorineural hearing loss may represent a separate genetic form of facioscapulohumeral dystrophy.

Inclusions staining gray or blue-gray in Romanowsky treated films were found in eosinophils and basophils in a family as an autosomal dominant anomaly without overt clinical effects. Associated with the inclusions were distinctive crystals which were different from the crystalloids of eosinophil granules and from Charcot-Leyden crystals. The restriction of the anomaly to eosinophils and basophils indicates that these are related more closely to each other than to neutrophils and mast cells, and suggests the existence of a separate stem cell for eosinophils and basophils.

FrpB is an outer membrane transporter from Neisseria meningitidis, the causative agent of meningococcal meningitis.
