The multiple roles of peroxiredoxins in tick blood feeding.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl radicals (HO·) are generated through partial reduction of oxygen. The HO· are the most reactive and have a shorter half-life than H2O2, they are produced from comparatively stable H2O2 through Fenton reaction. Although controlling HO· is important and biologically advantageous for organisms, it may be difficult. Ticks are obligate hematophagous arthropods that need blood feeding for development. Ticks feed on vertebrate blood containing high levels of iron. Ticks also concentrate iron-containing host blood, leading to high levels of iron in ticks. Host-der

Oral cavity hydrodynamics and drag production in Balaenid whale suspension feeding.

Balaenid whales feed on large aggregates of small and slow-moving prey (predominantly copepods) through a filtration process enabled by baleen. These whales exhibit continuous filtration, namely, with the mouth kept partially opened and the baleen exposed to oncoming prey-laden waters while fluking. The process is an example of crossflow filtration (CFF) in which most of the particulates (prey) are separated from the substrate (water) without ever coming into contact with the filtering surface (baleen). This paper discusses the simulation of baleen filtration hydrodynamics based on a type of h

Acanthamoeba as a temporal vehicle of Cryptosporidium.

The capacity of Acanthamoeba to predate Cryptosporidium oocysts was demonstrated. A maximum of six oocysts per Acanthamoeba trophozoite were detected, and a slow elimination of the internalized oocysts to the surrounding culture medium was observed. Free-living amoebae may act as carriers of Cryptosporidium oocysts and, thus, may play an important role in the transmission of cryptosporidiosis.

Effect of a 2-h daily exit on milk quality, activities and outside behavior of lactating cows.

This study investigated the effect of a 2-h daily exit on milk traits and behavior of dairy cows. A 4-week trial was conducted using 10 lactating cows divided into two homogeneous groups for DIM (129.2 ± 18.8), parity (3.0 ± 1.4) and absence of mastitis and lameness. The experimental design was a crossover (2 groups × 2 periods), so each group was alternatively under treatment IN or OUT in each period. The IN group remained inside a free-stall, while the OUT group had a 2-h daily exit (15:00-17:00) to a short-mowed grass paddock. Milk yield, milk quality, and activities were monitored via indi

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N1) Clade 2.3.4.4b Virus and Mass Mortality in Eurasian Cranes, Germany, 2025.

In autumn 2025, highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b virus, genotype EA-2024-DI.2.1, caused systemic infections leading to a mass mortality event among the western migrating subpopulation of Eurasian cranes (Grus grus) in Germany. Gregarious behavior at feeding and resting sites likely promoted rapid viral spread within the population.

Temporal foraging strategy of lactating beef cows grazing native subtropical grassland differing in herbage allowance and intake.

We study the effect of herbage allowance (HA, High HA vs. Low HA, 5 vs. 3 kg DM/kg BW respectively) on temporal foraging strategy during lactation (40±12 d after calving) in two years using 34 cows equipped with automatic behavior recorders during herbage intake assessment. Herbage mass (HM), and its chemical composition were assessed, while daily grazing (GT, min/d) and ruminating time (RT min/d) were monitored and expressed relative to herbage intake (DMI) in kg/cow/day. The number of feeding stations (FeSt) per minute and bites/FeSt were recorded by direct observation for 30 min/d in two to

Insulin-Related Disordered Eating Behaviour: A Scoping Review of Evidence.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Current understanding of insulin-related disordered eating behaviour is limited by inconsistencies in terminology and measurement. Prevalence of the behaviour and characteristics of individuals are unclear. How best to intervene and with whom is therefore unknown. This scoping review summarises existing knowledge as a first step to addressing the problem. Eligible sources investigated individuals with T1D restricting or inflating insulin with disordered eating motivations. Charted data included study aims, sample characteristics, measures, and key findings. RECENT FINDINGS:

Beyond the plate: nutritional gaps and health risks in selective eaters with ASD - a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Food selectivity (FS) is among the most frequent and challenging feeding difficulties in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is often driven by sensory processing differences and behavioral rigidity, leading to restricted diets, nutritional deficiencies, and psychosocial strain. This review synthesizes current evidence on the prevalence, mechanisms, and health consequences of FS in children with ASD. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Eligible studies included children aged ≤ 18 years with ASD and asses

Tannin supplementation modulates the grazing behavior and metabolomic profiles of beef cattle.

Because plant tannins can modulate rumen function and herbivore behavior, we tested whether supplemental tannins impact the foraging strategies and metabolic signatures of beef cattle grazing smooth bromegrass pastures. Twenty-four Angus cow-calf pairs were allocated to six 3.6-ha paddocks (four pairs/paddock), randomly assigned to Control (Ctrl; n = 3) or Tannin treatment (TT; n = 3). Animals received 1 kg/cow/day of dried distillers' grains with solubles (DDGS), with TT receiving an additional 0.4% tannins (2:1 condensed: hydrolizable). Grazing occurred during four 15-day periods (July-Septe

Increased Habit Frequency in the Daily Lives of Patients with Acute Anorexia Nervosa.

Strict eating routines and frequent rigid behavior patterns are commonly observed in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). A recent theory proposes that while these behaviors may have been reinforced initially, they later become habitual. To date, however, research has been overly focused on eating-disorder (ED)-related habits. Over the course of seven days, we applied an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to investigate the habit frequency and strength of ED-specific (food intake) and ED-unspecific (hygiene) habits in the daily lives of a sample of n = 57 AN and n = 57 healthy controls (HC)

Validation of 1-0 and instantaneous sampling for quantifying oral behaviors in milk-fed dairy calves.

Oral behaviors, including feeding, drinking, grooming, and non-nutritive behaviors, are used as indicators of health and welfare in dairy calves, but continuous measurement of these behaviors can be labor intensive. Instantaneous sampling is often used to save labor but has only been validated for feeding behavior in calves. One-zero sampling may be an appropriate strategy well suited to capturing the rapid performance of non-nutritive behaviors. Our objective was to validate 1-0 and instantaneous sampling for measurement of oral behaviors around the time of bottle delivery against true values…

Feeding experiments on Vittina turrita (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Neritidae) reveal tooth contact areas and bent radular shape during foraging.

The radula is the food gathering and processing structure and one important autapomorphy of the Mollusca. It is composed of a chitinous membrane with small, embedded teeth representing the interface between the organism and its ingesta. In the past, various approaches aimed at connecting the tooth morphologies, which can be highly distinct even within single radulae, to their functionality. However, conclusions from the literature were mainly drawn from analyzing mounted radulae, even though the configuration of the radula during foraging is not necessarily the same as in mounted specimens. Effects of food properties on chewing in pigs: Flexibility and stereotypy of jaw movements in a mammalian omnivore.

Chewing is a rhythmic oral behavior that requires constant modifications of jaw movements in response to changes in food properties. The food-specific kinematic response is dependent on the potential for kinematic flexibility allowed by morphology and modulation of motor control. This study investigates the effects of food toughness and stiffness on the amplitude and variability of jaw movements during chewing in a typical omnivorous mammalian model (pigs). Jaw movements were reconstructed using X-ray Reconstruction Of Moving Morphology (XROMM) and kinematic data associated with the amplitude

Conditioned place avoidance using encapsulated calcium propionate as an appetite suppressant for broiler breeders.

Broiler breeders, the parent stock of meat chickens, are feed-restricted throughout the production cycle to avoid obesity-related problems in their health and reproductive performance. Broiler breeders often show signs of chronic hunger, lack of satiety and feeding frustration, and the development of alternative feeding strategies has investigated the inclusion of calcium propionate (CaP) as an appetite suppressant. The mechanisms involved in the reduction of voluntary feed intake are unknown, but are thought to be due to low palatability, gastrointestinal discomfort, or both. The objective of

Direct and correlated responses to selection in two lines of rabbits selected for feed efficiency under ad libitum and restricted feeding: II. Carcass and meat quality.

To get insights into selection criteria for feed efficiency, 2 rabbit lines have been created: the ConsoResidual line was selected for residual feed intake (RFI) with ad libitum feeding and the ADGrestrict line was selected for ADG under restricted feeding. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact on carcass and meat quality of the genetic selections. This comparison was performed using 2 different feeding strategies corresponding to the selection design. Carcass and meat quality traits were recorded for the 3 lines (ConsoResidual, ADGrestrict, and an unselected control [generat

Mucous contribution to gut nutrient content in American gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum.

This study developed and applied an approach to calculate the proportion of fish gut content composed of mucus secreted by the oropharyngeal cavity and gut. The amount of nitrogen in the contents of the foregut (oesophagus and gizzard) and the epibranchial organs of suspension-feeding American gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum was significantly higher than the nitrogen in the homogeneous food source. Using data collected from suspension-feeding experiments and the nitrogen content of D. cepedianum mucus, a series of equations illustrated that mucus constituted c. 10% of D. cepedianum foregut co
