Vomiting and Gastric Motility in Early Brain Damaged Children With Congenital Zika Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the occurrence of vomiting and gastric dysmotility in dysphagic children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) and assessed possible associations of these findings with the severity of dysphagia and the presence of tube feeding. METHODS: Forty-six children with CZS were assessed for dysphagia, and the occurrence of vomiting, dietary volume tolerance <15 mL/kg, and feeding time per meal >30 minutes were evaluated. Gastric antrum ultrasonography was used to detect the frequency of contractions and measure antral areas (at fasting and 15 minutes postprandial), f

Accuracy of the corrected nose-earlobe-xiphoid distance formula for determining nasogastric feeding tube insertion length in intensive care unit patients: A prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: As nasogastric feeding tube insertion is a frequently applied, non-risk-free nursing technique, a high level of evidence-based nursing care is required. Little evidence is available regarding the accurate determination of the insertion length of nasogastric feeding tubes. The method of using the nose-earlobe-xiphoid distance as measurement is inadequate and not supported by evidence. Findings from a recent randomized trial led to an alternative calculation: the corrected nose-earlobe-xiphoid distance formula: (nose-earlobe-xiphoid distance × 0.38696) + 30.37 + 6 cm. OBJECTIVES: To

Arch intervention following stage 1 palliation in hypoplastic left heart syndrome is associated with slower feed advancement: a report from the National Pediatric Quality Cardiology Improvement Collaborative.

INTRODUCTION: Infants undergoing stage 1 palliation for hypoplastic left heart syndrome may have post-operative feeding difficulties. Although the cause of feeding difficulties in these patients is multi-factorial, residual arch obstruction may affect gut perfusion, contributing to feeding intolerance. We hypothesised that undergoing arch reintervention following stage 1 palliation would be associated with post-operative feeding difficulties. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. We analysed data from the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative, which maintai

The trends in the usage of breast milk in neonatal intensive care setting.

BACKGROUND: Many interventions have been designed to increase breast milk (BM) consumption among preterm and critical-term infants in neonatal units. The aim of this study was to determine the trends in the usage of BM in a neonatal unit and the risk factors for insufficient breast-milk feeding at discharge. METHODS: This retrospective study included newborn infants who hospitalized in the neonatal unit during two periods in different years, a 15-month period in 2012-2013 and in 2017-2018. The primary outcomes were the availability of BM within 24 h after delivery and the status of infant fee

Impact of Breast Milk, Respiratory Insufficiency, and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease on Enteral Feeding in Infants With Omphalocele.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to document the process of achieving full enteral feeding in infants with omphalocele and to identify factors that affect feeding success. METHODS: After institutional review board approval (study no. 5100169), 123 infants with omphalocele, born between 1993 and 2011 were reviewed. Mortalities were excluded. All survivors had complete follow-up. Variables suspected to impact enteral feeding in infants with non-giant versus giant omphalocele were compared. Independent t test, Mann-Whitney, and χ test were used. Regression evaluated for variable independenc

A comparison of the nutritive sucking performance of full term and preterm neonates at hospital discharge: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Studies show that 40% to 70% of premature infants exhibit both immature and atypical feeding ability. To establish thresholds of performance and develop efficacious treatments for initiating and advancing oral feedings, we must first identify the nutritive sucking performance measures impacted by preterm birth. AIMS: To compare objective measures of neonatal nutritive sucking between full term and preterm infants at hospital discharge. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a prospective observational study including full term (FT; N = 32) and preterm (PT; N = 44) infants. Nutritive

Simulated amniotic fluid-like solution given enterally to neonates after obstructive bowel surgeries: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Withholding postoperative feeding is common in neonates recovering from surgeries for congenital abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), which leads to prolonged exposure to total parenteral nutrition, intestinal atrophy, and feeding intolerance. Because amniotic fluid plays a significant role in fetal gut maturation and development, the aim of this study was to test a hypothesis suggesting that feeding tolerance could be improved in neonates recovering from surgeries for congenital obstructive bowel abnormalities by enteral administration of simulated amniotic fluid-lik

Explaining socioeconomic inequalities in exclusive breast feeding in Norway.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In high-income countries, lower socioeconomic position is associated with lower rates of breast feeding, but it is unclear what factors explain this inequality. Our objective was to examine the association between socioeconomic position and exclusive breast feeding, and to explore whether socioeconomic inequality in exclusive breast feeding could be explained by other sociodemographic characteristics, for example, maternal age and parity, smoking habits, birth characteristics, quality of counselling and breastfeeding difficulties. METHODS: We used data from a questio

Soy-based Infant Formula Feeding and Heavy Menstrual Bleeding Among Young African American Women.

BACKGROUND: Phytoestrogen exposure from soy formula feeding during infancy may disrupt reproductive system development, resulting in altered menstrual bleeding in adulthood. METHODS: We investigated this relationship in a cohort of 1,696 young African American women using enrollment data from the Study of Environment, Lifestyle, & Fibroids (2010-2012). Questionnaire data on soy formula feeding were available for 1,553 participants, 89% based on mother's report. Menstrual bleeding outcomes including those indicative of heavy menstrual bleeding were ascertained by interview. We estimated relati

Airway, feeding and growth in infants with Robin sequence and sleep apnoea.

OBJECTIVE: Robin sequence (RS) is associated with airway abnormalities that result in functional problems of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), feeding difficulties, and consequent poor growth. We evaluated the relationships between OSA severity, airway and feeding interventions, and weight at 12 months in infants with RS and OSA. METHODS: Retrospective notes review of children with RS managed at our neonatal unit (1998-2010, inclusive). RESULTS: Of 39 infants studied, 10 (25.6%) had mild/moderate OSA, and 29 (74.4%) severe. Infants with severe OSA required more airway interventions in hospital

Early oral feeding following intestinal anastomoses in children is safe.

BACKGROUND: Oral feeding following intestinal anastomoses is frequently delayed. In settings with limited utilisation of parenteral nutrition, this policy is problematic. This report evaluates the safety of early oral feeding following intestinal anastomoses in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study including 64 children aged ≤ 12-year-old who had intestinal anastomoses for varying surgical indications over a 6-year period. Oral feeding was started within 72 hours following surgery, if there was no contraindication. RESULTS: There were 41 (64.1%) boys and 23 (35.9%) girls aged

Early or delayed enteral feeding for preterm growth-restricted infants: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Growth-restricted preterm infants are at increased risk of developing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and initiation of enteral feeding is frequently delayed. There is no evidence that this delay is beneficial and it might further compromise nutrition and growth. METHODS: Infants with gestation below 35 weeks, birth weight below the 10th centile, and abnormal antenatal umbilical artery Doppler waveforms were randomly allocated to commence enteral feeds "early," on day 2 after birth, or "late," on day 6. Gradual increase in feeds was guided by a "feeding prescription" with rate of

Jejunal feeding tubes can be efficiently and independently placed by intensive care unit teams.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition support is an important therapeutic measure in critically ill patients. Several studies have shown that the enteral route is preferable to the parenteral route. Insertion of a feeding tube beyond the ligament of Treitz combined with continuous gastric drainage will reduce regurgitation and probably also the rate of nosocomial pneumonia. This study was conducted to assess the safety, success rate, and time required to establish jejunal nutrition by the fluoroscopy-guided technique in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. METHODS: This was a prospective observational study i

Efficacy of erythromycin for postpyloric placement of feeding tubes in critically ill children: a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Erythromycin enhances gastric emptying and has been suggested to facilitate nasoenteric feeding tube placement in adults. Our primary objective was to evaluate the effect of erythromycin on the transpyloric passage of feeding tubes in critically ill children, and second, to evaluate the effect of erythromycin on the distal migration of duodenal feeding tubes. METHODS: Seventy-four children were randomly assigned to receive erythromycin lactobionate (10 mg/kg) IV or equal volume of saline placebo 60 minutes before passage of a flexible weighted tip feeding tube. The determination of six ionophore coccidiostats in feed by liquid chromatography with postcolumn derivatisation and spectrofotometric/fluorescence detection.

The control of levels of anticoccidial feed additives in targeted feeds plays an important role in the assurance of efficiency of animal treatment, prevention of drug resistance, and food safety. The robust and labour-efficient method for the simultaneous determination of six ionophore coccidiostats (lasalocid, maduramicin, monensin, narasin, salinomycin, and semduramicin) in targeted feed has been developed. Properly grinded and homogenized feed sample was spiked with internal standard (monesin methyl ester) and extracted with methanol. The extract was analysed with reversed phase HPLC withou

Frustrated appetitive foraging behavior, stereotypic pacing, and fecal glucocorticoid levels in snow leopards (Uncia uncia) in the Zurich Zoo.

This study hypothesized that permanently frustrated, appetitive-foraging behavior caused the stereotypic pacing regularly observed in captive carnivores. Using 2 adult female snow leopards (Uncia uncia), solitarily housed in the Zurich Zoo, the study tested this hypothesis experimentally with a novel feeding method: electronically controlled, time-regulated feeding boxes. The expected result of employing this active foraging device as a successful coping strategy was reduced behavioral and physiological measures of stress, compared with a control-feeding regime without feeding boxes. The study

From Feeding Difficulties to Nutritional Risk in Children with Down Syndrome.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) may experience feeding difficulties arising from interactions among hypotonia, cardiorespiratory and gastrointestinal conditions, swallowing dysfunction, oral-motor and sensory differences, delayed feeding skill development, and psychosocial or environmental factors. These difficulties may compromise feeding safety and efficiency, restrict dietary diversity, and contribute to inadequate fluid or nutrient intake, faltering growth, micronutrient deficiencies, or excess adiposity. This narrative review synthesized the literature selected for its relevance to feedi
