Alcohol is the most harmful drug of abuse, making alcoholism a major economic and public health crisis. Unsurprisingly, this has led to the majority of the neurobiological research on alcohol focusing on its direct effects on an individual, including those affected by foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). However, research has shown that heavy paternal drinking predicts earlier and heavier adolescent drinking in the offspring, accompanied by other behavioural and molecular changes. While alcohol use disorder (AUD) is highly heritable, research on genetic variants alone does not sufficient

In the spectrum of adverse effects on the fetus or infant associated with maternal drinking during pregnancy the most dramatic is the fetal alcohol syndrome, a pattern of malformation that has been associated with maternal alcohol abuse. Other undesirable outcomes of pregnancy linked to alcohol exposure in utero include growth deficiency, major and minor anomalies, decrements in mental and motor performance, and fetal and perinatal wastage. Alcohol, like other teratogens, does not uniformly affect all those exposed to it. Rather, there seems to be a continuum of effects of alcohol on the fetus

The claim "FASD is entirely preventable" is unrealistic. The claim "FASD is entirely preventable"-inasmuch as it leads to shame and stigma-is actually doing more harm than good.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), which refers to alcohol consumption by pregnant women, is associated with the risk of numerous severe complications during fetal development. The State Agency for Alcohol Problem Solving reports that the incidence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) in Poland's general population is over 1.7%, and the incidence of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is estimated at more than 0.5%. This study aimed to evaluate the significance of alcohol exposure and focused on the pattern of alcohol intoxication exhibited by the mother during pregnancy and other environmental fa

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is a collective term that represents fetal abnormalities associated with maternal alcohol consumption. Prenatal alcohol exposure and related anomalies are well characterized, but the molecular mechanism behind this phenomenon is not yet understood. Few insights have been gained from genetic and epigenetic studies of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Our aim was to profile the important molecular regulators of ethanol-related alterations of the genome. For this purpose, we have analyzed the gene expression pattern of human carcinoma cell-derived embryoid bodies in

Fetal exposure to alcohol is the major known cause of mental retardation in the Western world. For more than half of the 20th century, the p … urrent understanding of the effects of fetal alcohol exposure, the occurrence of FAS and associated fetal alcohol spectrum disorders is still widespread and the associated health-care costs are staggering. This symposium provides an up-to-date analysis of fetal exposure to alcohol and FAS. It is directed not only to investigators working in the field but to a diverse group of sci …

Working with children who have developmental disorders is challenging. Besides having physical deficits, or intellectual deficits, or both, these children are at high risk for developing psychiatric disorders. This article describes three developmental disorders-autistic spectrum disorders, fragile X syndrome, and fetal alcohol syndrome-and their associated mental health issues, and provides recommendations for pharmacologic interventions.

As an integral part of the hippocampal network, the subiculum (SUB) plays a critical role in learning, memory, and emotional processing. This region contains diverse neuronal populations with distinct projection patterns, each contributing uniquely to information processing. The SUB has also been implicated in several neuropathological conditions, including mood disorders and epilepsy, which are highly prevalent among individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. The objective of this review is to examine the potential involvement of the SUB, a key component of the hippocampal formation, …

Fetal alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are underdiagnosed in general treatment settings. Among the factors involved in identifying the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure are (1) the evidence for prenatal alcohol exposure; (2) the effects of the postnatal, caregiving environment; (3) comorbidities; and (4) differential diagnosis, which includes identifying the neurodevelopmental effects of alcohol and discriminating these effects from those characterizing other conditions. This article reviews findings on the neurodevelopmental effects of prenatal alcohol exposure, includ…

Principles of morphologic diagnosis of alcoholic embryo- and fetopathy are discussed using data on two cases of this pathology. In the authors' opinion, three conditions are necessary to make diagnosis of alcoholic embryo- and fetopathy (i.e. maternal alcoholism history, morphologic signs of embryo- and fetopathy, ethanol concentration in fetal blood and urine). Alcohol embryo- and fetopathy must be differentiated from acute ethanol intoxication, during which microscopic visceral signs of embryo- and fetopathy are absent and ethanol blood concentration exceeds 2.0%.

Fetal alcohol syndrome is defined by a triad of symptoms such as facial dysmorphology, prenatal and postnatal growth deficiency, and central nervous system dysfunction. It is the result of teratogenic effects of alcohol consumption in pregnancy. The prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome is 1 to 3 per 1000 live births. From the neurological point of view, there is a possibility of the central nervous system dysfunction. Structural disjunctions are the consequences of fine and gross motor dysfunction, oculomotor dysfunction, and difficulties in sensorimotor integration. From the functional point
