A 20-year-old male, presented with cough, haemoptysis, breathlessness and wheezing for the past one month. Contrast enhanced computerised tomographic (CECT), scan of chest and fibreoptic bronchoscopy revealed an endotracheal mass that on histopathological examination showed adenoid cystic carcinoma of trachea. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of chest confirmed involvement of adjacent prevertebral, para-oesophageal and subcarinal lymph nodes rendering the tumour inoperable.

A miniature flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope (FFB) (Olympus BF-N20) (2.2 mm diameter) was applied to 53 children (20 female subjects) ranging in age from 3 months to 15 years (mean, 4.19 years). Non-obstructive colonic dilatation was diagnosed in six of 13,641 patients admitted to a Level I trauma centre over a 70-month period (incidence, less than 0.05 per cent). Four were older than 60 years, and five required long-term support on a ventilator. Successful treatment depends on expeditious decompression of the dilated colon. Fibreoptic colonoscopy is the recommended method.

Results of examination of 43 patients with injuries of the esophagus by cauterizing substances were obtained using the method of endoscopic biopotentialometry. It was shown that the method of endoscopic biopotentialometry is simple, allows rapid and exact determination of the degree of the injury of gastric mucosa at early terms from the moment of burn, choice of correct methods of treatment and prevention of such serious complications as bleedings, strictures etc.

Airway obstruction is an important factor predisposing to the development of apnoea in preterm infants. An ultrafine fibreoptic scope was used to examine the upper airway of 12 preterm infants with recurrent problematical apnoea. We used a contact Nd:YAG laser fit with a 0.2-mm diameter sapphire tip to excise a large (5 1/2 clock hour) iris ciliary body-choroidal tumor and a large (15 X 8 X 3 mm) choroidal tumor. The cutting and coagulation action of the laser helped to minimize intraoperative and postoperative hemorrhage.

Peroral endoscopic duodenal biopsy was used in the diagnosis and follow-up of forty-nine infants and children with suspected small intestine disease. Their ages ranged between one month and 12 years. Fifty-four upper gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures were performed and 139 biopsies were taken. The mean procedure time was 3.2 min with a range of 1.5-5.5 min. There were no complications. Traumatic rupture of the tracheobronchial tree is an increasingly occurring complication of blunt chest trauma. Early detection and surgical repair are important for definitive and successful reconstruction. Bronchoscopy is the most reliable diagnostic procedure. Use of a rigid bronchoscope is difficult and traumatic to the patient, and the flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope, with its greater technical simplicity, is more easily applied. We report the case of a patient who suffered bronchial stenosis and total atelectasis before discovery of a fracture was made.

Three foreign bodies were successfully removed from the upper gastrointestinal tract with a fiberoptic endoscope. They included a food bolus lodged above an esophageal stricture, a metallic nebulizer tip impacted in the mid-esophagus, and a spoon lodged in the stomach. A razor blade could not be removed from the duodenum. Many foreign bodies, including large or elongated objects, can be removed from the upper gastrointestinal tract with flexible fiberoptic endoscopes.
