AIM: To examine the long term survival of geriatric patients treated with percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) in Japan.
METHODS: We retrospectively included 46 Japanese community and tertiary hospitals to investigate 931 consecutive geriatric patients (≥ 65 years old) with swallowing difficulty and newly performed PEG between Jan 1st 2005 and Dec 31st 2008. We set death as an outcome and explored the associations among patient's characteristics at PEG using log-rank tests and Cox proportional hazard models.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to collect data on the prevalence of hand eczema and relevant risk factors in geriatric nurses in Germany.
METHODS: 1375 geriatric nurses from 86 nursing homes were investigated by 41 occupational physicians.
RESULTS: Hand eczema was diagnosed in 243 nurses, corresponding to a point prevalence of 18% [95% confidence interval (CI) 16-20%]. In most cases (71%), the skin changes were only mild. Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a major health concern in geriatric patients. EDS affects quality of life, daytime function, and mortality. Dementia is a social problem in Japan, as it is in other countries. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of patients with Alzheimer-type dementia (ATD) in the population. We analyzed 239 cases of patients autopsied at Fukushimura Hospital over a 10-year period. Clinicopathologically, 66% of these cases (158 cases) presented with dementia symptoms. The predominant form of illness was ATD. We found dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) to be as frequent as vascular dementia (VD).
