Florid cutaneous papillomatosis is a rare paraneoplastic dermatosis, most commonly associated with gastric adenocarcinoma. It is characterized by a sudden onset of hyperkeratotic papules, clinically indistinguishable from viral warts. We report an 80-year-old man who presented to our department with a two-month history of multiple verrucous lesions affecting the face, perioral region, and hands. Digital mucous cysts (DMC) are common benign myxoid cysts typically located on the fingers and toes. Recently, dermoscopic patterns of DMC were reported. BACKGROUND: Dermatomycoses caused by non-dermatophyte filamentous fungi are rare infections, except for onychomycosis, whose prevalence has increased over the past few years. Among these etiologic agents, we highlight Scytalidium dimidiatum and S. hyalinum, emergent fungi that cause mycoses that affect the nails and skin.

The presence of medically important fungi was studied in hallux nails scrapings obtained from 504 students (204 males, 300 females) of three universities in Cali. Specimens were examined by direct microscopic examination and fungal culture. Medically important fungi were found in 49 (9.7%) students, 24 (4.8%) had onychomycosis while the rest did not have nail lesions. In a female patient with increasing redness of the hands and face, proteins of Borrelia burgdorferi were detected in a biopsy of the ear by DNA amplification. Although acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans has been documented to be caused by B. burgdorferi, this is the first case with proven spirochetal presence in the skin of the head. After 2 weeks of intravenous therapy with ceftriaxone marked improvement of discoloration of the skin was noted.

Diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis without IgA deposits (DPGN) in patients with pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP) is described. This association has not been previously reported. Although PPP was resolved transiently after tonsillectomy, it was worsened coincidently at the time of exacerbation of DPGN. Improvement of proteinuria and PPP was observed after antiplatelet therapy. It was suggested that the renal manifestation and the development of PPP were associated.

By questionnaire survey, 32 out of 52 workers (61.5%) reported previous or current skin diseases from okra cultivation. The sites of skin lesions were mainly the arms, fingers and fingertips. Positive patch test reactions with preparations of okra leaves or immature pods in 111 workers, compared to 63 control subjects, were significantly higher in okra workers than in controls (p less than 0.01), ranging from 9.8 to 30.0%. 37 out of 111 workers (33.3%) were diagnosed as having allergic contact dermatitis (n = 17; 15.3%) and irritant contact dermatitis (n = 18; 16.2%) from okra cultivation.

Blood plasma thyroxine, triiodothyronine, thyroxine-binding globulin, and thyrotropic hormone have been radioimmunoassayed in 148 patients with rubromycosis. Serum antichlamydial antibodies were determined with an immunofluorescence method in 40 patients affected by palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP). Antibody titre greater than or equal to 16 was found in 53% of the cases, the titre being greater than or equal to 64 in 38% of the patients. Out of 335 persons of less than 25 years, 236 had an intermittent dyshidrosis; half of them showed an allergic contact eczema of the hands. Microscopical and cultural investigations revealed a foot mycosis in 24 persons, and in 13 a candidiasis of the hands. Hence, dyshidrosis is obviously not of mycotic origin. 113 out of 150 sensitized persons of this group of age were dyshidrotics; 50% of them had not yet finished their apprenticeship. Obviously, dyshidrosis favours an early sensitization in professions in which allergens are frequently encountered.
