BACKGROUND: Motorcyclists profit from improved safety measures and medical care only slightly compared with other road users. The aims of this study were to gain new insights into crash mechanisms and the resulting injuries of motorcyclists and to understand trends in road traffic accident statistics over the last 10 years.
METHODS: In our prospective analysis we documented data from collisions in which at least one subject sustained an injury of 2-6 on the Maximum Abbreviated Injury Scale (MAIS). Additionally, key parameters published by the German Federal Statistical Office were analysed.

The use of smart mouthguards in contact sports like rugby aims to enhance player safety by providing real-time data on head impacts. These devices, equipped with sensors, measure collision force and frequency, potentially identifying concussions that might go unnoticed during gameplay. The idea is that such enhanced monitoring will enable teams, physicians and other stakeholders to better protect players from the effects of on-pitch injury through immediate detection of head trauma and the long-term provision of player data. While we welcome the move towards a better understanding of the poten

BACKGROUND: Electric bicycle ("e-bike") use has increased rapidly in London and internationally. E-bike-related trauma ranges from minor injuries to major polytrauma, with a substantial long-term health care burden. Contemporary U.K. emergency department (ED) data comparing e-bike and conventional bicycle injuries remain limited.
STUDY OBJECTIVES: To quantify trends in e-bike-related ED visits in a 3-year period and compare demographics, injury patterns, alcohol involvement, helmet use, and markers of clinical severity with non-e-bike cycling injuries.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective c

OBJECTIVE: Electric bikes (e-bikes) are increasingly popular in the United States, with studies documenting increased injuries associated with their use. U.S. laws vary widely with licensure required in only 7 states, age restriction and helmet use varying by bike class in 35. This differs from the stricter regulations applied to higher-speed vehicles like mopeds. This study examines numbers of injuries and characteristics of serious injury events, comparing e-bikes to the more regulated moped.
METHODS: Emergency department data from 2019 to 2023 was extracted from the U.S. Consumer Product S

INTRODUCTION: Fighter pilots face unique occupational challenges, including exposure to high G-forces in suboptimal seating postures and wearing heavy equipment around neck and head. These factors contribute to a high prevalence of neck and back complaints, which can impair flight performance and prevent deployment of pilots.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was performed on the self-reported prevalence of neck and back pain among F-16 and F-35 pilots in the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Of the 121 pilots who were invited to participate, 50% (N = 61) were included. The questionnaire was based

Road traffic accident is a leading cause of death and various life deformities worldwide. This burden is even higher among motorcycle riders in lower-to-middle-income countries. Despite the various interventions made to address the menace, the fatalities continue to be on the ascendency. One major area that has received little attention is the attitude and behaviour of motorcycle riders. The present study aimed to examine the contribution of traffic Locus of Control (LoC) and health belief on road safety attitude and behaviour. 317 motorcycle riders participated in the study. The participants

Motorcycle and moped injuries remain a significant cause of motor-vehicle related morbidity and mortality. There is a paucity of literature describing the skeletal injuries of moped riders and how these compare to those of motorcyclists, however. This study seeks to examine the skeletal injuries sustained in such incidents and determine if there are significant differences. Hospitalized riders injured on powered two-wheeled vehicles (PTW) between 2004 and 2007 were entered into a registry along with their presentation and clinical course. This registry was sorted by PTW type. Riders with injur

PURPOSE: More youth are killed every year in the United States in all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crashes than on bicycles, and since 2001, one-fifth of all ATV fatalities have involved victims aged 15 years or younger. Effectively preventing pediatric ATV-related deaths and injuries requires knowledge about youth riding practices. Our objective was to examine ATV use, crash prevalence, and riding behaviors among adolescent students in a rural state.
METHODS: We administered a cross-sectional survey to 4,684 youths aged 11 to 16 years at 30 schools across Iowa from November 2010 to April 2013. Desc

The state of Texas was ranked 10th for all-terrain vehicle-related deaths among all states from 2007-2009. Health Service Region 4/5N of eastern Texas has a statistically significant higher rate of all-terrain vehicle-related injuries in children under the age of 18 than Texas as a whole (p < 0.001.) It is unknown why east Texas has a higher all-terrain vehicle-related injury rate. A retrospective analysis of the registry of the Texas Trauma Service Area G, which serves the east Texas area, from the years 2004-2010 was performed. Variations within the region were assessed using a geographic in

Concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury, occurs in many activities, mostly as a result of the head being accelerated. A comprehensive study has been conducted to understand better the mechanics of the impacts associated with concussion in American football. This study involves a sequence of techniques to analyse and reconstruct many different head impact scenarios. It is important to understand the validity and accuracy of these techniques in order to be able to use the results of the study to improve helmets and helmet standards. Two major categories of potential errors have been investiga

BACKGROUND: Snowmobiling is a popular family sport, with annual expenditures over $9 billion. The size and speed of snowmobiles make them potentially dangerous to children. Pediatric snowmobile-related trauma has not been studied in the United States.
METHODS: We analyzed 291 pediatric snowmobile- related injuries and 75 deaths reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission from 1990 to 1998. We reviewed snowmobile legislation in the states that reported at least 1 death to the Consumer Product Safety Commission during this time period.
RESULTS: The most common sites of injury were the e

A case-control study was conducted in El Paso County, Colorado to estimate differences in risk of head injury among persons in motorcycle crashes who were or were not wearing helmets. There were 71 cases, motorcyclists with head injuries from crashes, and 417 controls, motorcyclists in crashes without head injuries. Motorcyclists not wearing helmets were 2.4 times as likely to sustain head injuries (95% confidence limits: 1.23, 4.70) than motorcyclists wearing helmets. This odds ratio was adjusted for age and crash characteristics, using logistic regression. Alcohol intoxication and severity o

BACKGROUND: Turret trucks are widely used to handle cargo in Japanese wholesale markets. Under Japanese law, helmet use is not mandatory for turret truck operators, which potentially increases the risk of head and neck injuries. This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, risk factors, and outcomes of turret truck-related head and neck injuries as the first reported analysis of this injury mechanism.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of patients with turret truck-related head and neck injuries who were transported to St. Luke's International Hospital bet

INTRODUCTION: Outcomes from trauma at the major referral hospital [Hospital Nacional de San Benito (HNSB)] in El Petén, Guatemala, have not been analyzed. Empirical evidence demonstrated a high number of motorcycle accidents (MAs). We hypothesized a large incidence of head trauma with poor outcomes in MAs compared to all other forms of blunt trauma.
METHODS: Our hypothesis was tested by performing a community observational study and a retrospective chart review in El Petén, Guatemala. An independent observer catalogued 100 motorcycle riders on the streets of El Petén for riding practices as w
