Review of 2022 WHO guidelines on the control and elimination of schistosomiasis.

Schistosomiasis is a helminthiasis infecting approximately 250 million people worldwide. In 2001, the World Health Assembly (WHA) 54.19 resolution defined a new global strategy for control of schistosomiasis through preventive chemotherapy programmes. This resolution culminated in the 2006 WHO guidelines that recommended empirical treatment by mass drug administration with praziquantel, predominately to school-aged children in endemic settings at regular intervals. Since then, school-based and community-based preventive chemotherapy programmes have been scaled-up, reducing schistosomiasis-asso…

Cost-effectiveness of triple drug administration (TDA) with praziquantel, ivermectin and albendazole for the prevention of neglected tropical diseases in Nigeria.

Onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis (LF), schistosomiasis and soil transmitted, helminthiasis (STH) are all co-endemic in Nigeria. Annual mass drug administration (MDA) with ivermectin (for onchocerciasis), albendazole (for STH and with ivermectin for LF) and praziquantel (for schistosomiasis) is the WHO-recommended treatment strategy for preventive chemotherapy. Separate delivery rounds for distribution of these drugs have been the usual approach to MDA. All three drugs, however, have now been shown to be clinically and programmatically safe for co-administration with what has come to be kno…

Mental and behavioral effects of parasitic infections: a review.

Whether parasitic diseases-and in particular helminth infections because they are extensive and widespread--have an effect on mental functions and educational attainment is by no mean a new question. Concern about the possibility was evident in the early decades of the century, and the results of investigations designed to discover whether the effects of parasite infections had consequences on school children. Many species of helminth have been reported as causing infections in humans. Of the nematode infections, both soil transmitted helminthiasis and lymphatic filariasis are public health pr…

Distribution of enterobiasis among nursery school children in SE Estonia and of other helminthiases in Estonia.

The occurrence of helminthiases in Estonia was under extensive observation from 1956 until 1989. Enterobiasis had remained the most prevalent helminthiasis in Estonia in the 1990s. After 1990, the number of helminthological studies decreased. This study was conducted to investigate the occurrence and possible risk factors of enterobiasis among nursery school children in Southeast Estonia. A total of 954 nursery school children were examined from 22 nursery schools in Tartu and Põlva counties in Estonia. Enterobius vermicularis infection was detected using the anal swab technique. The parents o…

Cancer in disguise: a parasite within.

Cancer does not simply develop unchecked-it strategically exploits its host with parasitic precision. From immune evasion to tissue remodeling, cancer cells mirror the survival strategies of parasitic helminths. This resemblance suggests that malignant cells have co-opted deeply conserved, evolutionarily honed tactics used by parasites to persist within their hosts. By mimicking helminths, cancer cells may also engage type-2 immune responses, traditionally associated with anti-parasitic defense, as part of the host's attempt to control their expansion. Such parallels could also help explain wh

Environmental factors that regulate host-helminth interactions.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) infect over a billion people worldwide. Individual outcomes vary, ranging from subclinical, mild infections to recurrent or severe disease. Emerging evidence reveals that susceptibility to STH infection reflects a multilayered integration of past and present environmental factors. At mucosal surfaces, STHs activate type 2 immune, epithelial, and neuronal circuits, while microbial- and diet-derived signals promote homeostasis. Environmental signals tune the transcriptional programs that control these events, shaping interleukin-13-driven effector functions requ

Plant-derived anthelmintic agents in veterinary helminth control: Mechanistic insights and translational challenges.

Helminth infections, caused by cestodes, nematodes, and trematodes, continue to be a major constraint on animal health, livestock productivity, and global parasite control. While conventional anthelmintics such as benzimidazoles, macrocyclic lactones, levamisole, praziquantel, and triclabendazole are highly effective, their extensive use has driven resistance development, revealed stage-specific efficacy limitations, and raised concerns regarding environmental residues. These limitations have renewed interest in plant-derived anthelmintic agents as potential pharmacological leads and complemen

Anthelmintic stewardship: An essential step towards sustainable dairy farming.

Helminth infections in grazing dairy cattle can lead to asymptomatic infections, subclinical- or clinical disease. Whether the course of infection leads to disease depends on various factors, leading to a broad variety of prevalence rates and severity of disease between farms, between groups of cattle in a farm and between individual animals. Production losses related to helminth infections, the difficulty in diagnosing helminth disease and the wide availability and high efficacy of anthelmintics have led to overreliance on these products. Combined with management and other factors, this resul

Integrative taxonomy in helminth analysis: protocols and limitations in the twenty-first century.

The term integrative taxonomy was coined in 2005 for the identification of microorganisms using morphological, molecular, pathological and ecological components. Since then, more than 200 scientific articles have been published using this term in the helminthology field in different geographical regions of the world, leading to accurate identifications of specimens and expanding the known biodiversity by describing novel species. Importantly, the responsible use of this approach has led to balanced results in which molecular data do not overshadow morphological, pathological or ecological info

Helminths assemblage in two opossum's species, Didelphis albiventris and Didelphis aurita (Mammalia: Didelphimorphia), from the Atlantic Forest of Argentina.

In the Argentinian Atlantic Forest (AAF) of Misiones, opossums comprise 13% of the wild mammalian diversity. The white-eared opossum, Didelphis albiventris, and the southern black-eared opossum, D. aurita are sympatric marsupials, and the most frequent mammals in the northern Misiones. In this study, we describe the helminth assemblages from both D. albiventris and D. aurita in the northern AAF. We found a total of 15 species of helminths: 2 trematodes, 1 cestode, 11 nematodes and 1 acanthocephalan. The specific richness in D. albiventris was 12, while in D. aurita was it 13. Both opossum's sp

Genetically modified helminths as pharmaceutical biofactories.

A myriad of diseases can be treated by efficacious and potent drugs, yet the delivery efficiency is often hindered due to absorption issues, loss during first-pass metabolism, non-specific delivery, degradation before action and failure to comply to treatment. This has motivated researchers to develop novel methods for drug delivery, including live biotherapeutic products, notably transgenic bacteria delivering foreign therapeutic molecules. Recent advancements demonstrate that controlled experimental human helminth infections are tolerated and safe and may have natural protective attributes f
