Traumatic hip dislocations result from high-energy trauma. These dislocations are usually posterior in direction and have severe associated injuries. The less common anterior dislocation is usually of the inferior type. We report a case of an open anterior-inferior hip dislocation secondary to a high-speed motor vehicle collision. The wound was in the medial upper ipsilateral thigh. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an adult with an open inferior-type anterior hip dislocation.

Hip dislocation has long been one of the major complications after total hip arthroplasty (THA). From 1980 to 1994, we performed 2728 THAs (including primary and revision cases). There were 97 hips (3. 6%) with the complication of dislocation, 62 of which were followed up for at least 2 years (mean 5.3 years; range 2-12 years). Prevalence of malnutrition, particularly undernutrition, increases with advancing age, and patients with hip fracture are often particularly malnourished and/or undernourished. Hip arthrodesis remains an option for treatment of severe arthritis in young persons resulting primarily from osteonecrosis, congenital dysplasia, and joint sepsis. With the evolving use of ultrasonography, there has been an increasing emphasis on the technically oriented diagnosis of developmental hip dysplasia. Graf's alpha and beta angles and Harcke's bony rim percentage are two of the more common criteria, but their repeatability and reliability have not been well documented. As hemophilic arthropathy infrequently affects the hip joint, we performed a multicenter retrospective study to determine the results of hip arthroplasty in hemophilic patients. Thirty-four hip arthroplasties were performed in twenty-seven male patients at four major hemophilia centers from October 1972 through September 1990. Hip and knee dislocations individually are two of the relatively limited orthopaedic emergencies. Long-term results of treatment of these two types of injury are associated with avascular necrosis of the femoral head, knee instability, and knee stiffness.
