OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the ability for molecular epidemiology to augment traditional HIV surveillance beyond the detection of clusters for outbreak investigation. To do this, we address a question of interest to Public Health - Seattle and King County: what proportion of HIV diagnoses among people born outside of the United States are acquired locally?

BACKGROUND: Although molecular testing for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) is highly sensitive, the cost can be prohibitive. Those high costs are amplified when the recommended screening approach is used, which requires separate testing of specimens from 3 anatomic sites (rectal, pharyngeal and urogenital). OBJECTIVE: The incidence of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) in Europe is increasing. However, diagnosing LGV in a hospital setting is rare. We analysed the diagnostic process and clinical characteristics of patients with LGV in a hospital setting.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, young gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) continue to experience disproportionately high rates of HIV and other sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs). Many countries (e.g., Egypt, Russia, and Uganda) have very draconian laws against LGBT individuals. Despite facing such adversity or hostility many LGBT individuals do strive and maintain their sense of self-worth. How do they do it? The collection of papers in this special issue attempts to provide some answers to this question. I will attempt to analyze two overlapping issues in these papers, and how they might inform LGBT research using a resilience lens.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of sexual minority youth and their siblings. The participants were 56 lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender individuals ranging in age from 18 to 24 years, who reported information about a total of 107 siblings. This study sought to identify how urban gay communities are undergoing structural change, reasons for that change, and implications for HIV prevention planning. Key informants (N=29) at the AIDS Impact Conference from 17 cities in 14 countries completed surveys and participated in a facilitated structured dialog about if gay communities are changing, and if so, how they are changing. An assessment of risk-taking behaviour among men who have sex with men (MSM) attending a sauna venue was undertaken, using a standardized questionnaire, after which outreach screening was introduced targeting MSM. The epidemiology of the continuing outbreak of syphilis was reviewed to determine the factors driving the outbreak and assess the benefit of continuing outreach screening. National data on primary and secondary syphilis infections, as well as a cross-representation of data on new gonorrhea infections, show increased infection rates among men who have sex with men (MSM), even as overall rates are falling nationally for gonorrhea..
