Cephalometric and anthropometric data of obstructive apnea in different age groups.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome usually present with changes in upper airway morphology and/or body fat distrib … age group. RESULTS: The cephalometric measures MP-H (distance between the mandibular plane and the hyoid bone) and PNS-P (distance between the posterior nasal spine and the tip of the soft palate) and the neck and waist circumferences showed a statistically significant correlation with apnea-hypopnea index in both the full sample and in the ≥40 and <60 year …

FishFace: interactive atlas of zebrafish craniofacial development at cellular resolution.

BACKGROUND: The vertebrate craniofacial skeleton may exhibit anatomical complexity and diversity, but its genesis and evolution can be understood through careful dissection of developmental programs at cellular resolution. Resources are lacking that include introductory overviews of skeletal anatomy coupled with descriptions of craniofacial development at cellular resolution. In addition to providing analytical guidelines for other studies, such an atlas would suggest cellular mechanisms underlying development. DESCRIPTION: We present the Fish Face Atlas, an online, 3D-interactive atlas of cr

Eagle syndrome: an incidental finding in a trauma patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Eagle syndrome is a rare condition characterized by an elongated styloid process that occasionally irritates or disrupts adjacen … ess, measuring approximately 8 cm, with ossification of the stylohyoid ligament to the level of the hyoid bone. CONCLUSION: In the trauma patient, awareness of Eagle syndrome and knowledge of the anatomy associated with it may help differentiate symptoms secondary to acute injury from the chronic symptoms of this syndrome.

Magnetic resonance imaging study of the in vivo position of the extraglottic airway devices i-gel™ and LMA-Supreme™ in anaesthetized human volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Exact information on the anatomical in situ position of extraglottic airway (EGA) devices is lacking. We used magnetic resonance … ect (P=0.049). The i-gel™ significantly compressed the tongue (P<0.001). Both devices displaced the hyoid bone ventrally (P<0.001); the i-gel™ to a greater degree (P=0.029). The fibreoptically determined position of the bowl of the devices was identical. CONCLUSIONS: The LMA-S and i-gel™ differ significantly with regard to in situ position and spatial relat …

The laryngeal fat body.

AIM: To describe the anatomy and topography of the laryngeal fat body and of the space it lies within. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study is carried out on series of histological sections of head and neck blocks from six foetuses and three newborns. Three adult necks were dissected, a fourth one analysed through sagittal median section. CT-Scan and MRI imaging complete the description. RESULTS: The laryngeal fat body (LFB) lies within the pre-epiglottic (PE) space that stands in the median anterior part of the upper infrahyoid region, located just below the level of the hyoid bone. The walls o…

Subtotal laryngectomy with crico-hyoido-epiglotto-pexy for the treatment of extended glottic carcinomas.

We first described subtotal laryngectomy with crico-hyoido-epiglotto-pexy in 1974. This procedure is a modification of Majer's operation and results in the complete resection of the intact thyroid cartilage. The epiglottic petiole, the false cords, the true cords, and one arytenoid are also excised, along with the paraglottic space. The pharynx is closed by suturing the cricoid to the epiglottis and the hyoid bone. The neoglottis is occluded during deglutition by the epiglottis and the base of tongue, which come into contact with the remaining arytenoid. Postoperative hospitalization lasts app…

Reorganization of sleep architecture after surgery for OSAHS.

CONCLUSION: Genioglossus advancement and hyoid suspension (GAHM) plus uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) can decrease the apnea hypopnea index (AHI) and arousal index, especially respiratory-related arousals. Correspondingly, sleep architecture is reorganized, which is expressed postoperatively as an increase in slow wave sleep and a decrease in lighter sleep. OBJECTIVE: To explore the reorganization of sleep patterns after GAHM plus UPPP for severe obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: GAHM plus UPPP was performed on 31 patients with severe OSAHS (AHI > 40).

Genioglossus advancement and hyoid myotomy: short-term and long-term results.

Successful results of genioglossus advancement and hyoid myotomy with suspension (GAHM) in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) have been reported. However, there have been few studies of long-term results. Forty-six patients with hypopharyngeal obstruction underwent GAHM. Patients had a mean age of 40.1 +/- 4.2 years and a mean body mass index (BMI) of 28.9 +/- 2.1 kg/m(2). The mean follow-up was 39.4 +/- 5.7 months with a range of 37 to 46 months. The mean pre-operative RDI, short-term RDI, and long-term RDI were 47.9 +/- 8.4, 14.2 +/- 3.9, 18.6 +/- 4.1, respectively. The mean pos

[Ossification of the stylohyoid chain in computerized tomography--Eagle syndrome].

The computed tomographic morphology of a typical Eagle syndrome is presented on the basis of a case history. In a 40-year old male patient [correction of female] presenting with bilateral tinnitus, globus hystericus, and increasing hoarseness computed tomography revealed bilateral ossification of the stylohyoid ligament. The incidence of stylalgia is very low in comparison to the occurrence of a elongated styloid process or an ossified stylohyoid ligament. However, in cases of unexplained complaints in the head and neck region it should be considered in the differential diagnosis as it has the
