OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of two dose and single dose measles vaccination in a community setting.
DESIGN: Two community ICDS blocks with populations of 8990 and 8550 children below 12 years of age were selected. Block A had 1560 children between 9 mo to 1 year of age and Block B had 1380 children between the age of 9 mo to 1 year.
METHODS: All eligible children between 9 mo to 1 year of age were given measles vaccination in October 1994. Only the children in Group A were given a second dose of measles (as MMR) in April 1995; six months after the first dose. A survey was undertaken f

BALB/cBYJ mice were immunized against larval Onchocerca volvulus by subcutaneous injection of normal, irradiated, or freeze-thaw-killed Onchocerca sp. larvae. The mice received challenge infections of O. volvulus third-stage larva (L3) contained in diffusion chambers implanted subcutaneously. At two-weeks postinfection, the diffusion chambers were removed and larval survival was assessed. When mice were immunized a single time with 35-krad-irradiated or normal O. volvulus L3, there was a significant reduction in the survival of challenge parasites. However, there was little or no reduction in

Basing on the results of seroepidemiological study, carried out in two districts of Moscow by different methods, cluster selection method including, the authors have developed the following recommendations aimed at improving the strategy of revaccination against measles: (1) selective revaccination of only seronegative children or those with poor antimeasles immunity should be carried out, thus making it possible to reduce the number of susceptible children and diminish the risk of postimmunization reactions and complications; (2) when determining the groups of children to be revaccinated and

The epidemiology of measles in Australia has changed in the last decade due to control of the disease by increased immunization rates. Elimination of endemic measles is possible, but has still to be attempted. A partially immunized population results in disease in an older population, with the possibility of contracting measles in the childbearing years. For elimination of measles to occur, a second dose of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine should be introduced. Changes in the immunization protocol would need to be monitored with reliable population-based data on seroconversion rates and disease i

Young camels were inoculated intradermally with either camelpox or smallpox virus and the courses of infection, including serological response, were compared. Camelpox virus was highly infectious; generalized disease resulted which was transmitted naturally to contact animals. Smallpox virus produced only transient lesions at the inoculation site and a less marked serological response. Nevertheless, the camels inoculated with smallpox virus subsequently resisted a severe challenge with camelpox virus, and the possibility that limited replication of smallpox virus took place is discussed. The d

The role of the spleen in humoral antibody formation and in the pathogenesis of immune thyroiditis was studied by splenectomizing four monkeys (Macaca mulatta) prior to thyroid isoimmunization. Splenectomized animals, as well as intact controls, were subjected to sequential immunizations and the course of the immune disease was followed by periodic thyroid biopsies and frequent humoral antibody measurements over a period exceeding 1 yr. Extirpation of the secondary lymphoid organ markedly inhibited agglutinating antibody response, prevented formation of complement-fixing antibodies, but had no

In this paper, we consider a novel mpox virus transmission model with human interactions, hospitalization rates, vaccination coverage (single-dose and two-dose), and vaccine efficacy, where the susceptible individuals are divided into low-risk and high-risk groups, and infected individuals are divided into asymptomatic and symptomatic groups. First, the existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence on initial conditions, as well as the positivity and boundedness of solutions, are investigated. Then, the existence and local stability of all equilibria, the basic reproduction number, and forw

Objective: To evaluate the epidemiological protective effect of a booster dose of acellular DTP vaccine (DTaP) against pertussis in 6-year-old children. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted to compare the incidence of pertussis in 6-year-old children who received DTaP versus DT vaccine boosters in 2023 over a two-year period from May 2023 to May 2025. The protective effect of the fifth dose of DTaP against pertussis in 6-year-old children was evaluated. Results: A total of 960 participants were enrolled in this study, including 480 children in the experimental group who received

Controlling bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in livestock is often hindered by the presence of a wildlife reservoir, such as the Eurasian badger in the UK and Ireland. Vaccinating badgers against bTB can reduce the severity of Mycobacterium bovis infection and potential onwards transmission to cattle, badgers and other species; additional benefits may be achieved by combining this with fertility control to reduce population levels. To evaluate the effects of co-administering a bTB vaccine (BCG) and contraceptive vaccine (GonaCon), captive badgers were given either BCG only, GonaCon only or BCG + Gona

BACKGROUND: Tetanus, a life-threatening infection, has become rare in the United States since introduction of tetanus toxoid-containing vaccines (TTCVs), recommended as a childhood series followed by decennial boosters beginning at age 11-12 years; vaccination uptake is high in children but suboptimal in adults. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of sero-immunity to tetanus among persons aged ≥6 years in the United States and to identify factors associated with tetanus sero-immunity. Understanding population protection against tetanus informs current and future vaccine

With two endorsed and prophylactic vaccines against Zaire ebolavirus (referred to hereafter as EBOV), the number of individuals vaccinated against EBOV worldwide is estimated to range between 500 000 and 1 000 000 individuals, increasing with every renewed EBOV threat and vaccination campaign. Therefore, re-exposure of previously vaccinated health-care workers, and possibly community members, could become more frequent. In the absence of long-term data on vaccine efficacy and duration of protection, we urgently need to understand revaccination strategies that could maximise the level of protec

Determining whether SARS-CoV-2 exhibits seasonality like other respiratory viruses is critical for public health planning. We evaluated whether COVID-19 rates follow a seasonal pattern using time series models. We used time series decomposition to extract the annual seasonal component of COVID-19 case, hospitalization, and mortality rates from March 2020 through December 2022 for the United States and Europe. Models were adjusted for a country-specific stringency index to account for confounding by various interventions. Despite year-round disease activity, we identified seasonal spikes in COV

BACKGROUND: Given the importance of vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the prevention of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), detailed long-term analyses of neutralising antibody responses are required to inform immunisation strategies.
METHODS: In this study, longitudinal neutralising antibody titres to an ancestral SARS-CoV-2 isolate and cross-neutralisation to delta and omicron isolates were analysed in individuals previously infected with SARS-CoV-2, vaccinated against COVID-19, or a complex mix thereof with up to two years of follow

BACKGROUND: To meet the demand for effective and affordable inactivated polio vaccines (IPVs), a reduced dose, aluminium hydroxide (Al(OH)3)-adjuvanted IPV vaccine was developed (IPV-Al, Picovax®) and evaluated in clinical trials. The present trial is an extension of two previous trials (a primary and a booster trial). The aim was to evaluate the persistence of seroprotective antibodies (poliovirus type-specific antibody titre ≥ 8) in 4-year-old children who previously received IPV-Al as primary and booster vaccine doses and to determine the potential booster response and safety profile of an

This study details effective influenza vaccination via sustained intradermal (ID) release of vaccines using implantable and patch-free chitosan microneedles (MNs). The microneedle (MN) patch is composed of vaccine-loaded chitosan MNs with a dissolvable supporting array that gives extra length for complete insertion of MNs and is dissolved within the skin during insertion. Chitosan MNs can be quickly and entirely implanted into the dermis to function as a depot and an immune-boosting agent for the extended release of vaccines and simultaneous activation of the immune system. We found the influe
