Feasibility of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy to detect tetracyclines hydrochloride in infant milk powder.

We report the use of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) to detect tetracyclines hydrochloride (TCsH) in infant milk powder for the first time. Four kinds of TCsH exhibited their unique spectral features in the region of 0.3-1.8 THz. The main spectral features of these TCsH were still detectable when mixed with infant milk powder with concentrations at 1%-50%, even in the ternary mixtures. The results from chemometrics analysis showed that qualitative and quantitative detection of TCsH in infant milk powder could be successfully achieved. The residual predictive deviation (RPD) values

Exclusive Breastfeeding Is Not Ensuring an Adequate Vitamin B Status in Premature Infants with Very Low Birth Weight.

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of corrected age (CA) is recommended for premature infants with very low birth weight (<1500 g) (VLBW). B vitamins are essential for normal development and growth, including DNA methylation, and we investigated whether exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months provides an adequate cobalamin, folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin B2 status compared to additional or exclusive formula feeding from term to 12 months CA. Methods: In recruited infants born prematurely with VLBW, levels of vitamin B12 (cobalamin), folate, vitamin B6 (pyridoxal

Prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders in Saudi infants and toddlers: A cross-sectional multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are common pediatric problems, but their prevalence in Saudi Arabia is unknown. We aimed to assess the prevalence of FGIDs and risk factors among children in six regions of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional multicenter study enrolling children aged 0-48 months, attending pediatric clinics. Questionnaires evaluated the clinical history, symptoms, and sociodemographic information. FGIDs were defined according to Rome IV criteria. RESULTS: The study involved 1011 infants and toddlers (mean [standard deviation (SD)] aged,

Importance of the regiospecific distribution of long-chain saturated fatty acids on gut comfort, fat and calcium absorption in infants.

Gastrointestinal tolerance and fat and calcium (Ca) absorption are different between breast-fed (BF) and formula-fed (FF) infants. Certain components and/or structural particularities in human milk (HM), can contribute to favorable outcomes in BF infants. In HM, the long-chain saturated fatty acid (LCSFA) palmitic acid has a different stereospecific distribution (sn-2 position) compared to most infant formula (IF) (primarily sn-1, 3 positions), which may contribute to unfavorable outcomes. Evidence suggests palmitic acid is important in the formation of stool FA-mineral (or FA-Ca) soaps, assoc…

Adverse effects of cow's milk in infants.

The feeding of cow's milk has adverse effects on iron nutrition in infants and young children. Several different mechanisms have been identified that may act synergistically. Probably most important is the low iron content of cow's milk. It makes it difficult for the infant to obtain the amounts of iron needed for growth. A second mechanism is the occult intestinal blood loss, which occurs in about 40% of normal infants during feeding of cow's milk. Loss of iron in the form of blood diminishes with age and ceases after 1 year of age. A third factor is calcium and casein provided by cow's milk

Breastfeeding and the milk resistome shape the establishment and transmission of antibiotic resistance genes in the infant gut microbiome.

The infant resistome, the collection of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) of newborns, is critical for gut microbiota establishment. Using metagenomic sequencing data, we analyzed various 1-week and 1-month postpartum samples to study infant resistome establishment, ARG transmission, and its impact on functional redundancy of the microbiota. A total of 431 samples were analyzed; infant stools (1-week, n = 119; 1-month, n = 119), maternal stools (1-month postpartum, n = 120), and breastmilk (1-month postpartum, n = 73). Breastfeeding correlated with increased functional redundancy and alter

Early and Higher Volumes of Formula Supplementation after Birth Impact Breastfeeding Rates at Discharge in Well-Baby Nursery: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Physiologic breast milk production in the first 24 hours is estimated to be between 2 and 10 mL per feed. Many mothers intending to breastfeed use formula supplementation (FS) early on, which can affect successful breastfeeding. Whether the volume and timing of FS introduced in the first 24 hours of life (24 HOL) impacts the rate of "breastfeeding at discharge" (BFAD) is not well-studied and was investigated herein. STUDY DESIGN: Single-center, retrospective, chart review of breastfeeding infants born at ≥35 weeks who received supplementation in the first 24 HOL. Comprehensive demo

Association of human milk feedings with a reduction in retinopathy of prematurity among very low birthweight infants.

INTRODUCTION: With the increased survival of very low birthweight (VLBW) infants, weighing less than 1500 g at birth, the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a significant cause of blindness among children in the United States, is also increasing. Preterm infants with a positive diagnosis of ROP during the perinatal period are at increased risk for ocular abnormalities and for deficits in visual function during later periods of development. Human milk has many antioxidant constituents including inositol, vitamin E, and beta-carotene that may protect against the development of ROP.

Five Arab children with glucose-galactose malabsorption.

Five children with glucose-galactose malabsorption (GGM) are presented. Two infants from Saudi Arabia were first-degree relatives, the third infant was unrelated and the other two were of Yemeni and Syrian origin, respectively. All the infants had chronic diarrhoea and four had failed to thrive since early infancy. All had stools positive for reducing substances, and sugar chromatography showed glucose and galactose malabsorption. Small bowel biopsies were normal in all. One infant developed gangrene of both legs as a complication of hypernatraemia and dehydration, necessitating bilateral ampu

Awareness of feeding, growth and development among mothers of infants with cleft lip and/or palate.

BACKGROUND: Awareness of feeding among mothers plays an important role in the growth and development of children with cleft lip and palate. Mothers' increased awareness provides the right care and nutrition to these children in order to grow and achieve their developmental milestones. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at (1) assessing mothers' awareness on breastfeeding and formula-milk feeding, weaning, growth, and development of infants with cleft lip and palate and (2) the relationship of mothers' awareness with their level of education and monthly household income. METHODS: This cross-section

Early growth of very low birth weight infants.

BACKGROUND: Early growth in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants has been found predictive of their later outcomes. This has led to increased interest in establishing measures to optimise such growth. In facilities without the resources required to undertake long-term audits for all the high risk infants they graduate, these growth parameters may also be used as selection criteria for those meriting such follow up reducing costs. OBJECTIVES: To describe early growth patterns among a cohort of VLBW infants and determine some of the factors associated with poor growth among them. DESIGN: Cross

Mineral nutrition and bone mineralization in full-term infants.

Bone mineralization is an intricate and tightly regulated process. Calcium, magnesium and phosphorus are the main minerals and play a principal role in skeletal mineralization. The following conclusions can be derived from different clinical studies. The large differences in Ca/P ratio between different formulas and between formulas and human milk suggest that most healthy full-term infants can adjust to a wide range of Ca/P ratio in their diet. The differences in serum levels of mineral and of mineral-regulating hormones are rarely clinically significant and most probably reflect continued co

Immunoregulation of bovine lactoferrin together with osteopontin promotes immune system development and maturation.

The immune system of infants is partly weak and immature, and supplementation of infant formula can be of vital importance to boost the development of the immune system. Lactoferrin (LF) and osteopontin (OPN) are essential proteins in human milk with immunoregulation function. An increasing number of studies indicate that proteins have interactions with each other in milk, and our previous study found that a ratio of LF : OPN at 1 : 5 (w/w, denoted as LOP) had a synergistic effect on intestinal barrier protection. It remains unknown whether LOP can also exert a stronger effect on immunoregulat…

Nutritional interventions to reduce rates of infection, necrotizing enterocolitis and mortality in very preterm infants.

Observational studies demonstrating reduced rates of infections, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and mortality in preterm infants fed their own mother's milk, as opposed to formula, have prompted endeavors to achieve similar effects with the right choice of food and food additives. In a systematic review of meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials (RCTs), we considered nutritional interventions aimed at reducing the rates of infections, NEC, or mortality in very preterm infants. The overall effects of particular interventions were presented as risk ratios with 95% confidence intervals.
