Current health inequality targets include the goal of reducing the differential in infant mortality between social groups. This article reports on a multivariate analysis of risk factors for infant mortality, with specific focus on deprivation and socio-economic status. Data on all singleton live births in England and Wales in 2005-06 were used, and deprivation quintile (Carstairs index) was assigned to each birth using postcode at birth registration. Deprivation had a strong independent effect on infant mortality, risk of death tending to increase with increasing levels of deprivation. The st…

Children, and particularly infants, have physiological, anatomic, and social factors that increase vulnerability to temperature extremes. We … ed temperature exposure. Twenty-six studies met our inclusion criteria. Outcomes assessed included: infant mortality (n = 9), sudden infant death syndrome (n = 5), hospital visits or admissions (n = 5), infectious disease outcomes (n = 5), and neonatal conditions such as jaundice (n = 2). Higher temperatures were associated with increased risk of acute infant mort …

Although injury-related deaths have been documented among children and adult populations, insufficient attention has been directed towards injury-related infant deaths. The objective of this retrospective study was to investigate maternal and infant characteristics associated with injury-related infant deaths in West Virginia. Birth and infant mortality data for 2010-2014 were sourced from the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health, Charleston. Relative risk was calculated using log-binomial regression utilizing generalized estimating equations. Maternal characteristics associated with injury-…

BACKGROUND: Globally, infant mortality has declined considerably but has remained unacceptably high in sub-Saharan Africa, especially Nigeria where infant mortality rate is 67/1000 live births. To facilitate infant mortality reduction in Nigeria, an understanding of the synergistic effect of bio-demographic characteristics of mothers known as High Risk Birth Behaviours (HrBBs) is important. We therefore investigated the influence of HrBBs on infant survival in Nigeria.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study design utilized data from the 2018 round of Nigerian Demographic Health Survey. The study…

BACKGROUND: Countdown to 2015 was a multi-institution consortium tracking progress towards Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 and 5. Case studies to explore factors contributing to progress (or lack of progress) in reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) were undertaken in: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Niger, Pakistan, Peru, and Tanzania. This paper aims to identify cross-cutting themes on how and why these countries achieved or did not achieve MDG progress.
METHODS: Applying a standard evaluation framework, analyses of impact, coverage and equi

Infant deaths are traditionally divided into neonatal and postneonatal categories by age at death. In the past neonatal deaths were largely … neonatal-postneonatal classification is no longer a useful proxy. Although neonatal and endogenous infant mortality remain fairly synonymous, postneonatal deaths are no longer equivalent to deaths of exogenous causation. Alternatives to use of days of life for classifying infant deaths as neonatal or postneonatal include dating infant deaths by corrected gestatio …

BACKGROUND: In view of the limitations of survey-based demographic techniques for infant mortality estimation, the current strategy of some developing countries is to improve vital information. This article presents recent progress in the improvement of national databases in Brazil.
METHODS: For the vital information analysis, the data sources are the Mortality Information System and the Live Birth Information System. The adequacy analysis is based on five indicators calculated at the municipality level per 3-year period. Adequacy criteria are established by means of the indicator percentile …

The effect of low birth weight (LBW) on diarrhoea morbidity and mortality is analysed and interventions to increase birth weights are reviewed. Birth weight is a major determinant of infant mortality and, in developed countries at least, its effect on neonatal mortality is independent of socioeconomic status. We have located no satisfactory data on LBW as a determinant of diarrhoea mortality or morbidity. The strong association between LBW and mortality, however, makes it likely that there is an association between LBW and diarrhoea mortality in developing countries where diarrhoea is a major …

There is little information on mortality among multiple gestations complicated by premature rupture of membranes (PROM). In this study, we estimated the occurrence of the components of early mortality (stillbirth, neonatal and infant mortality) among twin pregnancies using the generalised estimating equation framework to account for intra-cluster correlations. Using the population-attributable risk, we also computed the level of excess mortality that could be averted by preventing PROM. Our findings reveal that the likelihood of stillbirth (odds ratio (OR) = 1.88; 95% confidence interval (CI)=…

In low and middle-income countries (LMICs), the infant mortality rate is much higher than the high-income countries (HICs). The higher infant mortality is due to low birth weight (LBW) a combination of intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR) and prematurity, which are risk factors for acquiring infectious diseases amongst newborns. Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a neonatal procedure that is carried out in newborn infants, especially in preterm babies and LBW babies. It is skin-to-skin contact between a mother's bare chest and a stable infant. KMC is an important intervention in reducing infant …

The beneficial effects of breast-feeding on infant mortality and morbidity have been demonstrated in many studies. Few of these, however, have taken into account the possible confounding effect of birth weight. Several studies have shown that babies of low birth weight are less likely to be breast-fed. In some circumstances, this alone may account for a more than twofold excess in postperinatal infant mortality rates among non-breast-fed babies, even in the absence of any beneficial effect of breast-feeding. The association between birth weight and breast-feeding and the magnitude of the confo…

Infants' and children's health is particularly susceptible to exposure to various environmental contaminant insults as their immune systems are immature and daily activities may present differing patterns of exposure. Although some studies noted an association between long-term exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and increased infant mortality frequency, few investigations examined the relationship between reduced exposure to PM2.5 and changes in infant mortality rates. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine whether diminished levels of PM2.5 in Taiwan improved post-n…

UNLABELLED: Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a critical congenital heart that requires complex surgical and medical management. Despite recent clinical advances, population-level data on infant mortality trends related to HLHS remain limited. This study examines temporal patterns in HLHS-related infant mortality rates (HLHS-IMR), timing of death, interstate variation, and demographic disparities, along with updated prevalence estimates. We analyzed U.S national data from 2007 to 2021 using CDC-WONDER linked births/deaths database. HLHS-related infant mortality rates (HLHS-IMR), identi…
