TCLNet: A Thermal Contrast-Aware Lightweight Network for infrared object detection.

Infrared object detection plays an important role in low-light and complex-environment perception. However, infrared images often exhibit low signal-to-noise ratio, weak target-background contrast, and limited texture information, which can degrade detection performance in small-target and cluttered-background scenarios while making it difficult to balance detection accuracy and model complexity. To address these challenges, this paper proposes TCLNet, a Thermal Contrast-Aware Lightweight Network for infrared object detection. TCLNet introduces a Thermal Contrast Encoder (TCE) to enhance local

Chem-SIM: SIM-resolved chemical imaging via wide-field mid-infrared photothermal modulation of fluorescence.

Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) has attained high spatiotemporal delineation of subcellular architecture, yet offers limited insight into chemical composition. We develop Chem-SIM, a structured-illumination fluorescence detected mid-infrared photothermal microscopy, for SIM-resolved chemical imaging of microorganisms and mammalian cells. Poisson maximum-likelihood demodulation and spectral normalization across wavenumber recover the weak IR-induced fluorescence intensity change under low photon budgets and convert the fluorescence intensity modulation to chemical fingerprints. Hydroxyl number-dependent polyphenol interactions in purified starch and whole potato flour systems.

This study comparatively investigated the divergent structure-activity relationships of polyphenols in potato starch (PS) versus whole potato flour (WPF) matrices. Rheology indicated polyphenols enhanced storage (G') and loss (G″) modulus in WPF but reduced them in PS, with myricetin having the strongest effect. Polarized light microscopy showed that the complexity of the matrix transforms the crystallization of myricetin from dense aggregates in PS to dispersed microcrystals in the WPF. Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, and 13C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance further demon

Coarse Eyeball Direction Recognition from Eyelid Skin Deformation Using Infrared Distance Sensors on Eyewear.

As smart eyewear becomes increasingly widespread, the need for hands-free input interfaces is growing. Although eye-based input is a promising approach, many everyday interactions do not necessarily require the high-precision gaze-point estimation used in mainstream camera-based systems; instead, what is often needed is the recognition of coarse eyeball direction. In this study, we propose a method for recognizing coarse eyeball direction using infrared distance sensors mounted on eyewear. The proposed method leverages deformation patterns in the eyelid and surrounding skin associated with cha

Enhancing IR-MALDESI MSI Spatial Resolution Through Beam Constriction With a Ring-Actuated Iris.

RATIONALE: Infrared matrix-assisted laser desorption electrospray ionization (IR-MALDESI) mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) enables label-free, spatially resolved molecular analysis of biological tissues under ambient conditions. While improving spatial resolution is important for mapping fine tissue structures, mid-infrared (IR) lasers are diffraction limited to laser spot sizes greater than ~5 μm, necessitating creative approaches to enhance spatial detail for subcellular MSI. METHODS: An adjustable, ring-actuated iris combined with a reflective objective was integrated into the IR-MALDESI MS

Assessment of the relationship between body surface temperature and behavioral responses in rams using infrared thermography.

BACKGROUND: Animals under heat stress change their behavior to regulate their body temperature, as higher temperatures lead to a decrease in feed intake, thereby affecting production. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the temperature of different body parts measured by a thermal camera as a non-invasive indicator and the behavioral responses shown by the animal under different environmental conditions to predict these responses and understand the physiological and emotional state of rams. METHODS: The temperature-humidity index (THI) was used to define the environmen

DEF-Net: A dual-modal feature enhancement and fusion network for infrared and visible object detection.

Infrared-visible object detection in complex dynamic environments often suffers from weak feature representation and underutilized cross-modal complementarity, leading to missed and false detections. To address these issues, we propose a Dual-modal Enhanced Feature Enhancement and Fusion Network (DEF-Net). To enhance the model's focus on informative features within both infrared and visible modalities, a feature interaction enhancement module is designed to effectively highlight and reinforce salient information. Furthermore, to better exploit the complementary characteristics of the two modal

MDM: Modality decoupling for visible and infrared Mamba-based object detection.

Object detection methods that fuse visible and infrared modalities significantly enhance detection accuracy and robustness by leveraging complementary information from both modalities. However, existing methods suffer from the following shortcomings: 1) They are limited to specific scenarios (e.g., conventional or remote sensing small targets), making it difficult to meet the detection needs of multi-scale targets; 2) CNN-based fusion methods, constrained by static convolutional kernels, struggle to handle fusion tasks involving significant modality differences; 3) Transformer-based fusion met

Cognitive enhancement through transcranial infrared laser stimulation: Insights from our research.

Photobiomodulation (PBM), particularly transcranial infrared laser stimulation (TILS), has emerged as a promising non-invasive method to enhance cognitive functions in healthy individuals and those with neuropsychiatric or neurodevelopmental disorders. Conventional pharmacotherapy often fails to improve cognition effectively and can produce adverse effects. In contrast, TILS of the prefrontal cortex modulates brain energy metabolism through mechanisms like mitochondrial upregulation, improved cerebral oxygenation, and enhanced neuroplasticity. This chapter synthesizes findings and insights fro

Photothermally Triggered Intratumoral In Situ Drug Synthesis: A Smart Nanoplatform for NIR-Controlled Precise Activation of Antitumor Precursors.

To enable the biomedical application of hydrophobic antitumor agents and expand organic reactions in physiological settings, we engineered an NIR-responsive nanoplatform (Fe-MSNY6-OPD/benzil@PEG-AS1411, FOBA) for on-demand intratumoral drug synthesis. The system utilizes an iron-doped mesoporous silica framework co-loaded with photothermal converter Y6 and hydrophobic precursors (o-phenylenediamine/benzil), surface-coated with high-MW PEG as a stimuli-responsive gatekeeper. Upon 808 nm NIR laser irradiation, Y6-mediated photothermal heating induces PEG phase transition, creating a transient so

Progress in Metal-Based Nanomaterials for Photothermal Therapy in the Second Near-Infrared Window.

Photothermal therapy (PTT), characterized by its non-invasiveness, minimal side effects, and potent anti-tumor efficacy, represents a promising alternative to conventional cancer treatments. PTT in the near-infrared-II (NIR-II) window (1000-1700 nm) obtains significant interest due to its lower energy dissipation, deeper penetration, and higher power safety windows than its counterparts conducted in other optical bands. Among those materials capable of coupling light and heat within the NIR-II window, metal-based nanomaterials bear a strong photothermal conversion capability that establishes t

An Emerging Toolkit of Ho3+ Sensitized Lanthanide Nanocrystals with NIR-II Excitation and Emission for in Vivo Bioimaging.

Optical imaging in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) holds great promise for biomedical detection due to reduced tissue scattering and autofluorescence. However, the rational design of NIR-II probes with superior excitation wavelengths to balance the effects of tissue scattering and water absorption remains a great challenge. To address this issue, here we developed a series of Ho3+-sensitized lanthanide (Ln) nanocrystals (NaYF4: Ho, Ln@NaYF4) excited at 1143 nm, featuring tunable emissions ranging from 1000 to 2200 nm for in vivo bioimaging. Shortwave Infrared Hemicyanine-6 for Cancer-Activated and Shaving-Free Preclinical Imaging of Lung Metastasis.

Fluorescence imaging in the shortwave infrared (SWIR) window enables deeper tissue and higher-contrast visualization of pathological events compared to that in the conventional near-infrared (NIR) window. However, specific SWIR detection of biomarkers of interest remains challenging because few fluorophore scaffolds are available to be further modified into biomarker-activatable SWIR probes. Herein, we employ a highly efficient approach to synthesize six hemicyanine derivatives with emissions extending to the SWIR region and structural amenability for construction of activatable probes. The ba

A novel vaginal manipulator for identifying vaginal canal separation line by visible and near-infrared transillumination light: PHARUS Pipe.

INTRODUCTION: In total laparoscopic hysterectomy, a uterine manipulator with transillumination functionality is often employed as an instrument to visualize the vaginal canal demarcation line. However, the utilization of this device necessitates an external white light source and a fiber optic cable. In this study, we developed a prototype vaginal manipulator (PHARUS Pipe) with a simpler configuration to visualize the vaginal canal separation line. METHODS: The PHARUS Pipe is constructed from a pipe, an annular array of chip-type light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a wavelength of warm-white an

NIR-II Imaging-Guided Self-Penetrating Nanomotors for Millimeter-Scale Deep Thrombolysis Tracking and Accelerated Embolus Clearance.

Pulmonary embolism (PE), a life-threatening condition caused by thromboembolic obstruction of pulmonary arteries, demands urgent therapeutic interventions and precise diagnostic strategies to prevent systemic complications. Current thrombolytic therapies and imaging modalities face critical limitations, including hemorrhagic risks from high-dose fibrinolytic drugs and insufficient sensitivity for detecting microemboli or dynamically tracking thrombolytic progression. Herein, a self-propelling nanomotor platform is reported that integrates second near-infrared window (NIR-II) fluorescence imagi

Enhancing bloodstain visibility on dark surfaces: Specificity and sensitivity of infrared photography for detecting bloodstains.

Low power microscopy and additional light sources are the standard tools used for searching items for blood in forensic casework. This process can be time-consuming and can yield limited information when examining dark surfaces due to poor contrast between bloodstains and the surface. This research investigated the specificity and sensitivity of Infrared (IR) photography in visualising various bloodstains on multiple dark surfaces using the Canon XA60 IR Camcorder. The specificity studies involved the comparison of the IR visualisation of neat blood and common substances found in casework (suc

Gas Microbubble Formation via Near-Infrared Femtosecond Laser Ablation in Live Cells.

Focused near-infrared femtosecond laser irradiation induces efficient photochemical breakdown of intracellular molecules, resulting in the formation of gas microbubbles that ultimately lead to cell death and removal. This study characterizes these microbubbles using high-speed imaging. Microbubbles generated within cells by single-pulse irradiation are consistently larger than those formed in the surrounding culture medium across a broad pulse energy range. Notably, the energy threshold for intracellular microbubble formation is several tens of nanojoules lower than in the culture medium, enab

Enhancing Near-Infrared Photoluminescence of Ag8GeS6 Quantum Dots Through Compositional Fine-Tuning and ZnS Coating for In Vivo Bioimaging.

Quantum dots (QDs) composed of a group I-IV-VI semiconductor, Ag8GeS6, have been intensively investigated for constructing efficient energy conversion systems. However, their potential for photoluminescence (PL)-based applications has remained unexplored. Herein, the first successful preparation of Ag8GeS6 QDs exhibiting near-infrared (NIR) PL is reported. These Ag8GeS6 QDs with an average diameter of 4.2-4.6 nm has an almost constant energy gap at 1.48-1.45 eV, even when the Ge/(Ag+Ge) precursor ratio is varied from 0.05 to 0.90. A significant PL peak is observed at 920 nm, the intensity bein
