OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of the interferon alpha-2b nasal spray in prevention of rubella and measles virus infections.
METHODS: The properly selected volunteer groups have been divided into interferon alpha-2b experimental and control group. The experimental group received interferon alpha-2b treatment by nasal spray for 2 days before the immunization, then both groups were challenged with rubella and measles attenuated live vaccine respectively through nasal spray. The sera from pre-immunization and 21 and 28 days after immunization were collected to test the IgG antibody titers.

We present the case of a 66-year-old woman with a diagnosis of chronic active viral C hepatitis, for whom a course of interferon alpha-2A was prescribed at a dose of 4.5 MU per day for a 2 month period, followed by the same dose on alternate days for 4 months. Four human immunodeficiency virus-positive homosexual men with 2- to 4.5-year histories of recurrent oral warts that had failed to respond to conventional surgical and other treatment modalities were offered treatment with interferon-alpha. Therapy of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated poly-arteritis nodosa is still evolving. Here we report a successful treatment with a short-term steroid administration in combination with a-interferon and lamivudine and a complete sequence analysis of the HBV genome. We examined the effect of recombinant IFN-alpha and IFN-gamma on induction of LAK cells from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNCs) in 7 pre-operative breast cancer patients and 4 healthy volunteers. Significant LAK activity was developed from PBMNCs of pre-operative breast cancer patients and healthy volunteers after incubation for 4 days with IL-2 (presence of IL-2 vs. absence of IL-2). A patient with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treated with interferon alpha (IFN alpha) and who developed autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is described. The patient was treated with IFN alpha 2a, a complete cytogenetic response was achieved 5 months later, and this response has lasted now more than 7 years. Autoimmune hypothyroidism appeared at 18 months of treatment, and 1 year later severe type I autoimmune hepatitis developed. To our knowledge this is the first report of such complication in an IFN alpha-treated CML patient.

Twenty-three patients with advanced melanoma were treated with a combination of subcutaneous recombinant human interleukin-2 (IL-2), and recombinant interferon alpha-2a (IFN-alpha) with chemotherapy consisting of four cycles of carboplatin (300 mg/m2, day 1) and vinblastine (6 mg/m2, day 1), every 28 days (CV-IL-IF). We studied the effects of two antiviral agents, human interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) and ribavirin, on subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) virus infections in hamsters. By intracranial administration, IFN-alpha alone improved the survival of infected hamsters by 20% at a dose of 6 x 10(4) IU/kg every other day for 10 days. When the dose of IFN-alpha was increased incrementally to 6 x 10(6) IU/kg, the survival rate increased by 70% in a dose-dependent manner. Adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL) is an aggressive malignancy of mature activated T cells, associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-1) infection. Preclinical and clinical studies with an azidothymidine (AZT)/interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) combination resulted in a marked and synergistic antiretroviral activity. The administration of the two drugs in HIV-seropositive patients affected with Kaposi's sarcoma, however, induced neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and, in some cases, anemia. Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) is a product of activated T-lymphocytes, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) is a product of both lymphocytes and macrophages. These cell types are often present at sites of tissue damage secondary to chronic infection or autoimmune disease. The purpose of this study was to characterize the effects of TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma on a human submandibular gland epithelial cell line (HSG). IFN-gamma caused a concentration-dependent decrease in HSG cell growth (approximately 70% in 6 days). Conversely, TNF-alpha alone had little effect on the growth of these cells.

Forty-five patients with cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL), 32 with mycosis fungoides (MF) and 13 with Sézary syndrome (SS), were treated with interferon-alpha 2a (IFN-alpha 2a) (6-9 x 10(6) IU daily) for 3 months.
