Non-suicidal self-injury ideation among Chinese secondary vocational and junior college students: a latent profile analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social media addiction, depression, anxiety and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) ideation are major public health issues among student populations. Although they have continuously attracted social attention and concern, research on their correlations and categorical analyses remains relatively limited. The present study sought to assess the NSSI ideation status of Chinese secondary vocational and junior college students and identify the factors influencing their ideation. METHODS: Data were collected using the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS), The Inventory of Parent and

Adult attachment and problematic social media use: a daily measure study.

Attachment theory provides a valuable framework for understanding individual vulnerability to problematic social media use (PSMU). Previous research has found consistent evidence that PSMU is associated with increased attachment anxiety, whereas the role of attachment avoidance remains unclear. Most studies have relied on cross-sectional designs and measures that may fail to distinguish intensive from maladaptive engagement with social media. In this study, we adopted a daily diary approach in a community sample of adults (N = 89; 77.5% female; mean age = 23.64 ± 5.92 years, range = 20-50) to

Associations of employment status with social media addiction, anxiety, and parenting self-efficacy among mothers of infants: a cross-sectional study using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Differences in social media addiction, anxiety, and parenting self-efficacy according to maternal employment status have important implications for maternal and child public health. However, evidence comparing these psychosocial outcomes between employed and non-employed mothers of infants remains limited, hindering the development of targeted maternal and child health interventions. This study compared social media addiction, anxiety, and parenting self-efficacy between employed and non-employed mothers and evaluated the performance of machine learning models for classifying emplo

Approach bias modification training reduces gaming severity and improves brain network topology in internet gaming disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with internet gaming disorder (IGD) suffer from an imbalance of over-integrated and weakly dissociated functional brain networks. Approach bias modification training (ApBMt) has been used to correct patients' automatic approach biases to addictive stimuli; however, research exploring changes in brain network topology is limited. METHODS: Seventy subjects were randomly assigned to the approach-avoidance task (AAT) group or the sham-AAT group, and 57 subjects (AAT, 30; sham-AAT, 27) completed the entire procedure, which included pretests, AAT/sham-AAT interventions, and pos

Cerebellar-mediated imbalance of multiple neural circuits in internet gaming disorder: A multi-voxel pattern and granger causality analysis.

OBJECTIVE: At present, research on the neural mechanism of Internet gaming disorder (IGD) has predominantly concentrated on the prefrontal-striatal pathway, with the regulatory role of the cerebellum remaining to be systematically elucidated. METHODS: Using multimodal MRI in 66 IGD subjects and 46 recreational game users, we integrated multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA) and Granger causality analysis (GCA). RESULTS: We found that the high discriminative hubs of IGD included the right superior parietal gyrus, cerebellar Crus I/II, and lobule VIIb. Further GCA studies revealed a reduction in t

The prevalence of internet addiction and its association with quality of life among inflight security officers based on a national survey: a network analysis perspective.

BACKGROUND: Given the heavy responsibilities placed on inflight security officers (IFSO) to ensure passenger safety and eliminate inflight hazards, they often turn to Internet use to cope with their work pressure. This study examined the prevalence of internet addiction (IA) among IFSO in China, and its associated factors, relationship with quality of life (QOL), and network structure. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study based on a national survey. Expected influence (EI) was used to identify the most central nodes within the network model. RESULTS: Among 3,475 IFSO included in this st

Emotional neglect, hikikomori behaviors and internet gaming disorder in adolescents: A three-wave longitudinal study.

Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) has become a significant concern due to its potential impact on daily functioning, particularly among adolescents. Emotional neglect (EN) and hikikomori behaviors (HB) are two factors thought to influence IGD, yet their interplay remains underexplored. This study explores their longitudinal relationships guided by the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution (I-PACE) model. A total of 1865 adolescents from Italy (M = 15.34, SD = 1.08) participated in a three-wave longitudinal study. Surveys were administered at baseline (T1), six months (T2), and twelve m

Individual-specific subspace of altered functional connectivity predicts clinical symptoms in Internet gaming disorder.

BACKGROUND: Despite extensive research efforts aimed at unraveling the neural mechanisms underlying Internet gaming disorder (IGD), reproducibility remains a challenge, largely due to overlooking the clinical and biological diversity within individuals affected by IGD. Therefore, investigating the altered brain features associated with IGD within both individual-shared and individual-specific subspaces is crucial for understanding this complex and heterogeneous disorder. METHODS: This study included 555 participants, comprising 326 individuals with IGD and 229 recreational game users (RGUs).

Risk Factors of Problem Gaming and Gambling in US Emerging Adult Non-Students: The Role of Loot Boxes, Microtransactions, and Risk-Taking.

Video gaming and gambling have increasingly converged with one another (e.g., social casino games). For emerging adults (18-25 years old), who are already at an elevated risk for addictive disorders, this overlap in these activities may increase the likelihood of problematic involvement. At the moment, Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is being considered as a future medical diagnosis by the American Psychiatric Association. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the potential comorbidity between IGD and gambling disorder (GD) in emerging adults, as well as explore if problematic eng

The effect of reward learning on inhibitory control in internet gaming disorder: Evidence from behavioral and ERP.

Reward dysregulation and deficits in inhibitory control significantly contribute to the development of internet gaming disorder (IGD). While prior research demonstrates that reward history influences individuals' inhibitory control, it remains unclear whether this effect extends to individuals with IGD. The primary aim of this study was to investigate whether individuals with IGD exhibit impairments in reward learning and whether prior reward learning influences their inhibitory control, using both behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) measures. This study first employed a probability s

Problematic social media use and inhibitory control among post-secondary students.

INTRODUCTION: Problematic social media use (PSMU) parallels traditional characteristics of substance use disorders, including salience, functional impairment, and tolerance. An excessive focus on social reward and engaging in negative behaviors on social media may decrease certain executive functions. However, the role of how inhibitory control processes manifest in PSMU are not well understood. The current study aims to explore both the presence of inhibitory control impairments and harmful online behaviors, such as negative social comparison, in problematic social media use. METHODS: A popu
