Positive and negative partner relationship quality and mental health: Ambivalent and indifferent partner relationships.

Both ambivalent (high positive and negative quality) and indifferent (low positive and negative quality) partner relationships are associated with poor health. It is not known why ambivalence is health predictive in some studies and indifference in others. Measurement selection could be an explanation, with support-seeking measures linked to ambivalence and overall positive and negative relationship quality measures to indifference. No research has tested whether measurement selection affects the positive-by-negative relationship quality interaction pattern associated with health. Our purpose

The Influence of Robot Facial Expression and Inclusion Behavior on Rapport and Trust in Older Adults: Mixed-Factorial Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization framework for healthy aging emphasizes that the capacity to establish and sustain relationships is a vital component of functional ability. Social robots offer valuable support for this relational aspect, although their effectiveness is contingent upon the quality of the interactions. While it is established that facial expressions and inclusive behaviors can influence rapport building, the combined effects of these elements on older adults remain unexamined. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the main and interaction effects of robot facial e

Understanding how movement signals shape early social coordination and learning.

From early in life, social interactions rely on a rich exchange of nonverbal information. This review paper focuses on the nonverbal, kinematic information conveyed by how social partners move and proposes that such movement modulations may facilitate interpersonal coordination between infants and adults, as well as support infants' learning in early interactions. So far, findings on movement modulations have been investigated in isolation: sensorimotor communication in interpersonal coordination between adults (signaling) on the one hand, and in early teaching interactions between adults and

People in more individualist cultures are more motivated to make others feel better.

In many Western cultures, trying to make others feel better is considered critical for psychological health and social relationships. However, given that people think about emotions and relationships differently across cultures, the desirability, means, and benefits of making others feel better may also vary by culture. In two multicountry survey studies (Study 1: N = 3,154, 13 countries; Study 2: N = 3,503, 17 countries) and in a daily dairy study (Study 3: N = 243, 2 countries), we assessed motivation and strategies used for influencing others' and one's own emotions. To test whether potenti

Dopaminergic modulation of behavioral and electrocortical markers of interpersonal performance monitoring in Parkinson's Disease.

Effective interpersonal interactions necessitate constant monitoring of others' actions, a process known as interpersonal performance monitoring, which is influenced by the dopaminergic system and characterized by specific electrocortical signatures. To examine how this process is affected in Parkinson's Disease (PD), we assess patients with PD performing coordination tasks with a virtual partner (VP) under two conditions: on dopaminergic medication (PD ON) and after withdrawal (PD OFF). During Interactive trials, which require adaptation to the VP's actions, PD OFF performance is impaired com

Unconditional cash transfers and romantic relationship outcomes: A randomized controlled trial.

Couples living with low incomes in the United States experience greater relational distress relative to couples with more financial resources. Drawing from the family stress model, which argues that economic strain is a catalyst for relational distress, one approach to improve the relationships of couples with low incomes might be addressing and ameliorating families' financial difficulties. This study tested this possibility using secondary data from the Baby's First Years project, a randomized controlled trial of ongoing unconditional cash transfers to mothers. We examined the impact of rece

It takes two to co-ruminate: Examining co-rumination as a dyadic and dynamic system.

Co-rumination-defined as when individuals perseverate on problems with each other, focus excessively on negative feelings, and cyclically discuss the causes and consequences of problems-is often examined from the perspective of the person seeking support or by assigning one rating of co-rumination to a dyad. This approach muddles how each person contributes to the "co" of co-rumination and may have implications for understanding prior work that has shown associations between co-rumination and intrapersonal and interpersonal well-being. We leveraged state space grids to examine co-rumination as

More benefits than costs: Associations of co-rumination with positive friendship quality and depressive symptoms at the within-person level.

Co-rumination, or excessive problem talk within a dyadic relationship, has been suggested to have both costs and benefits; it has been associated with both increased depressive symptoms and higher friendship quality. Although previous research has shown moderate concurrent and longitudinal associations between co-rumination, depressive symptoms, and friendship quality, it is unclear whether these processes also take place at the within-person level (i.e., whether increases in co-rumination co-occur with or predict increases in depressive symptoms or friendship quality). Furthermore, some of co

Social Activities With Friends and Neighbors in Relation to Cognitive Function in Later Life: The Benefits of Contact and Helping.

Despite a growing body of literature linking social activities to cognitive function, studies specifically examining the potential cognitive benefits of friendships and neighbors remain limited. Drawing on eight waves of nationally representative data from the Health and Retirement Study (1998-2012; N = 29,777), we investigated whether two distinct forms of social activities with friends and neighbors-(1) getting together for a social visit and (2) providing informal helping-were associated with cognitive function, which was assessed with a modified version of the Telephone Interview for Cogni

Romantic Functioning in the Aftermath of Adult Sexual Assault: A Scoping Review.

This scoping review investigates the influence of Adult Sexual Assault (ASA) on romantic functioning through an analysis of 16 studies. Four databases were searched (Google Scholar, PsycINFO, Taylor & Francis Online, and ProQuest) in June 2023 for relevant published and grey literature. Emphasis was placed on conducting analyses solely among individuals who had experienced ASA, defined in this context as non-consensual sexual contact occurring at or after the age of 18 years. The review highlighted several factors explored in existing literature, encompassing relationship satisfaction, sexual

Mutual cooperation gives you a stake in your partner's welfare, especially if they are irreplaceable.

Why do we care so much for friends-much more than one might predict from reciprocity alone? According to a recent theory, organisms who cooperate with each other come to have a stake in each other's well-being: A good cooperator is worth protecting-even anonymously if necessary-so they can be available to cooperate in the future. Here, we present three experiments showing that reciprocity creates a stake in a partner's well-being, such that people are willing to secretly pay to protect good cooperative partners, if doing so keeps those partners available for future interaction. Participants pl

[Hypnosis: a complementary tool for managing adolescents affected by anorexia nervosa].

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) mainly affects adolescent girls and requires specialized, multidisciplinary care. In Geneva, the HUG's AliNEA unit and the pediatric hypnosis consultation have been collaborating since 2021 to integrate hypnosis into the management of AN. Hypnosis is seen as a complementary tool to the Maudsley therapeutic model, but not a miracle solution. It needs to be adapted to each patient's individual needs and to the different phases of treatment : re-association with the body, reinforcement of motivation, exploration of interpersonal relationships and consolidation of progress. A…

A close look at sociality in DSM criteria.

PURPOSE: The importance of sociality in psychology and psychotherapy is quite undisputed; however, this construct risks being underestimated in psychiatric nosography. The aim of the review was to assess the relevance of sociality in DSM 5 criteria. METHOD: Sociality-laden criteria of 192 selected DSM categories have been identified through a textual grid. Second, the criteria have been classified into 6 categories, i.e., (1) Affiliation and Attachment (AA), (2) Social Communication (SC), (3) Perception and Understanding of Others (PUO), (4) Culture, (5) Clinical Significance Criterion (CSC)

The moderating role of attachment in the association between physiological synchrony in married couples and supportive behavior in the transition to parenthood.

Despite supportive behaviors playing a central role in intimate relationships, the extent to which physiological and psychological factors are involved in the quality of the observed spousal support, remains largely unknown. From a physiological stance, cardiac synchrony has been identified as an important component involved in dyadic interpersonal interactions. This study aims to examine whether individual differences in attachment determine, at least to some extent, whether cardiac synchrony enhances or impedes the quality of the observed spousal support. Specifically, this study examines wh
