Segmental atresia of the transverse colon was observed at necropsy in a neonatal foal. The dorsal and ventral components of the large colon were fused, and ended blindly. The small colon was collapsed and completely closed at its cranial end. The right and left dorsal and ventral colons were fused into one blind-ended tube. Histologically, eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies demonstrative of Equine Rhinopneumonitis were present in the thymus.

In the past 31 years, 47 cases of duodenal obstruction were admitted to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. Thirty-six per cent of these had Down's syndrome. The crude mortality was 48% but this figure was reduced to 33% in the last five years of the study. The combination of duodenal obstruction, Down's syndrome and any other abnormality carried an 89% risk of mortality.

The authors report five cases of intrinsic duodenal obstruction in neonates, operated upon since 1976 to 1982. In 3 cases, it's a question of atresia and in two cases of annular pancreas. The associated lesions are in one case, a macrocephaly, in a second case, a microcephaly with ocular lesions and in a third case a jejunal atresia. The operating procedure consists four times in a duodeno-jejunostomy and one time in a duodeno-duodenostomy. A complementary jejunal resection with end-to-end anastomosis is necessary in the case of associated jejunal atresia. A discharge gastrostomy is performed

Pyloric atresia and epidermolysis bullosa are both rare anomalies, and the coincidental occurrence of both is highly unlikely. The postmortem findings of 2 unrelated cases is presented, with special reference to the pathology and pathogenesis of pyloric atresia.

A retrocolic side-to-side duodenojejunostomy has been a generally accepted standard operative procedure for the correction of congenital duodenal atresia and stenosis. However, this operation has the complication of delayed anastomotic function that often requires a use of transanastomotic feeding tube or intravenous hyperalimentation. A diamond-shaped side-to-side duodenoduodenal anastomosis has been performed in nine consecutive cases of congenital duodenal obstruction, with satisfactory results. A transverse incision is made in the dilated proximal duodenum, and a longitudinal incision in t

A rare case of an infant with both atresia of the colon and Hirschsprung's disease is described. The diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease was fortuitously made on histological examination of the resected colon. The importance of being aware of the possibility that these two conditions may coexist is stressed.

Congenital hernia of the umbilical cord (CHUC) is a rare congenital entity compared to more common post-natally occurring umbilical hernia. Although recognized as a distinct entity since 1920s, CHUC is often misdiagnosed as a small omphalocele, resulting in its underreporting. We present the first case report of CHUC associated with extracelomic colonic atresia, complicated by perinatal perforation in a newborn. We also discuss the differentiating features from other anterior abdominal wall defects such as omphalocele and gastroschisis including its embryogenesis.

We report a 48-year-old woman who underwent surgery in early neonatal period for duodenal atresia and developed subsequent diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms of gastric outlet obstruction, gastrointestinal bleeding and malnutrition developed over the past 5 years. Inflammatory and cicatricial lesions of gastrojejunostomy formed for congenital duodenal obstruction following annular pancreas required reconstructive surgery.

Conversion of fetal circulation to adult-type occurs immediately after birth but neonates with problems in the development of pulmonary vasculature are prone to revert back to fetal circulation. This phenomenon is known as flip-flop circulation which may be induced perioperatively and as such anesthesiologist are central to its management. We report a case of term neonate planned for repair of duodenal atresia that despite having no respiratory symptom preoperatively developed severe hypoxemia under anesthesia that was even unresponsive to 100% oxygen. The intraoperative hemodynamics of the ne

ObjectiveWe compared the cross-sectional areas of the duodenum to the distal small intestine during early gestation to determine if there is a difference in age for recanalization.MethodsSerial sagittal sections of six fetuses of gestational age (GA) 8-10 weeks were examined morphologically to compare the degree of recanalization of the duodenum with to the more distal small intestine.ResultsAt GA 8-9 weeks, the duodenum had more epithelial plugs and vacuoles with no or narrower spaces compared to the distal small bowel. Quantitative assessment at GA 10 weeks showed that the cross-sectional ar

OBJECTIVE: To summarize data of a multiple-center study of the treatment of duodenal atresia in 3 children's hospitals of the Siberian Federal District.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed postoperative outcomes in 211 patients with duodenal atresia. All patients underwent surgery at various hospitals of the Siberian Federal District: Ivano-Matreninsky Children's Clinical Hospital in Irkutsk (expert hospital) - 120 patients; Center for Maternal and Child Welfare in Krasnoyarsk (learning hospital No. 1) - 51 patients; Kemerovo Regional Children's Clinical Hospital (learning hospital No. 2) - 40

A 76-year-old woman with a history of radiation therapy for vaginal cancer was referred to our hospital because of fever and hepatobiliary dysfunction. Computed tomography showed stenosis of the lower bile duct and edema-like changes in the duodenum from the descending to transverse parts. Endoscopic biliary stenting was performed according to the rendezvous method. Squamous cell carcinoma, similar to vaginal cancer, was found on pathological examination of the duodenum. We accordingly diagnosed obstructive jaundice and duodenal stenosis caused by vaginal cancer and retroperitoneal metastasis.

Mesenteric hematoma is an uncommon condition caused by focal bleeding in the mesenteric vessels. Hematomas are related to trauma, pancreatitis, arteriopathy, and the use of antithrombotic agents. Although hematomas cause intestinal stenosis by compressing the adjacent small bowel, duodenal stenosis due to hematoma is rare. Therefore, the treatment indications for cases of hematoma with stenosis have not been established. We herein report a case with a large mesenteric hematoma that caused duodenal stenosis by compressing the third portion of the duodenum. Stenosis was successfully ameliorated

Ileocecal valve atresia is a very rare anomaly with only a few cases reported in the literature. The conventional therapy includes ileocecal resection and ileocolic anastomosis. Here, we present a patient with inborn ileocecal valve atresia in whom we successfully preserved the ileocecal valve and the terminal ileum through opening a valve and tapering the ileum in one operation.

Congenital defects are those abnormalities present at birth. During embryogenesis, many anomalies can occur. The primitive gut tube lengthens quickly and rotates, allowing the gastrointestinal tract acquire its final position and orientation. Because the colon of large animals is complex, most changes occur in this segment. Thus, in ruminants, colon atresia is the most frequent malformation, affecting mainly ascending colon, at the level of the spiral loop. There are no previous references about a very atypical colon atresia at the junction of distal loop and transverse colon, such we have des

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal atresia/tracheo-esophageal fistula (EA/TEF) has an incidence of approximately 1:3,500. The incidence of malrotation is thought to be 1:200-500. We attempted to define the incidence of a combination and discuss the implications.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of all patients admitted to a single institution with a diagnosis of EA or EA/TEF or TEF between April 1981 and January 2013. Patients were included if the position of the duodeno-jejunal flexure (DJF) was determined by upper GI contrast study (UGIS), surgery or post-mortem.
RESULTS: Case notes were rev
