Two Aotus trivirgatus (owl monkeys) were infected experimentally with Leishmania braziliensis and two with L. mexicana strains of Panamanian origin in a pilot study to determine the susceptibility and the course of infection of cutaneous leishmaniasis in this primate species. We describe a 36-year-old female patient with angioedema-like swellings and rhinoconjunctivitis for 1 year occurring exclusively at her home. The clinical history revealed no correlation with foods, food additives, drugs, or aeroallergens. The complaints always started immediately after contact with the sandbox tree (Hura crepitans) placed in her apartment. We report two cases of severe idiopathic solar urticaria treated with plasma exchange therapy. The autoclaved Trichinella spiralis larvae vaccine (ATSLV) was tested and showed a surprising and somewhat unpredictable effect on the immune system of mice experimentally infected with T. spiralis. Reports of corticosteroid anaphylactic reactions are rare in the medical literature. We describe the case of a nonatopic 17-year-old girl with bronchial asthma and aspirin intolerance who developed a dramatic anaphylactic reaction to oral prednisone. She recovered with shock therapy and intravenous administration of diphenhydramine and hydrocortisone. Intradermal testing with a wide range of steroid preparations gave positive results to prednisone. No reactions occurred to methylprednisolone and hydrocortisone.
