Draft genome sequence data of methanotrophic Methylovulum psychrotolerans strain S1L and Methylomonas paludis strain S2AM isolated from hypoxic water column layers of boreal lakes.

Methanotrophic bacteria inhabit a wide range of natural (e.g. wetlands, lakes and soils) and anthropogenic (e.g. wastewater treatment plants and landfills) environments. They play a crucial role in mitigating atmospheric emissions of the greenhouse gas methane. There is also a growing interest in applying methanotrophs in the bioconversion of biogas - and natural gas - methane into value-added products (e.g. chemicals and single-cell protein). Hence, isolation and genome sequencing of methanotrophic bacteria is needed to provide important data on their functional capabilities. Here, we describ…

Linking Microbial Activities and Low-Molecular-Weight Thiols to Hg Methylation in Biofilms and Periphyton from High-Altitude Tropical Lakes in the Bolivian Altiplano.

The sources and factors controlling concentrations of monomethylmercury (MMHg) in aquatic ecosystems need to be better understood. Here, we investigated Hg transformations in sediments, periphyton associated with green algae's or aquatic plants, and benthic biofilms from the Lake Titicaca hydrosystem and compared them to the occurrence of active methylating microorganisms and extracellular Hg ligands. Intense Hg methylation was found in benthic biofilms and green algae's periphyton, while it remained low in sediments and aquatic plants' periphyton. Demethylation varied between compartments but

Short report: Antibody prevalence of select arboviruses in mute swans (Cygnus olor) in the Great Lakes region and Atlantic coast of the United States.

Mute swans (Cygnus olor) are an invasive species in the United States. The dramatic increase in their populations in localized areas has led to various problems, among them competition with native species and attacks on humans by aggressive swans. However, very little is known about the ability of these swans to transmit pathogens to humans, domestic birds, or wildlife or participate in enzootic maintenance. To learn more about select pathogens that mute swans may harbor, a survey was conducted from April of 2011 to August of 2012 in the Great Lakes region and localized areas of the Atlantic c…

Thioalkalivibrio thiocyanoxidans sp. nov. and Thioalkalivibrio paradoxus sp. nov., novel alkaliphilic, obligately autotrophic, sulfur-oxidizing bacteria capable of growth on thiocyanate, from soda lakes.

Nine strains of haloalkaliphilic, obligately autotrophic, sulfur-oxidizing bacteria able to grow with thiocyanate (SCN-) as the sole energy and nitrogen source were isolated from soda lakes in South-East Siberia, Kenya and Egypt after enrichment on sodium carbonate minerals buffered at pH 10 with thiocyanate as the substrate. The isolates fell into two groups that were substantially different in terms of cell morphology, growth parameters and the ability to oxidize carbon disulfide. The bacteria were able to oxidize sulfide, polysulfide, sulfur and tetrathionate, as well as thiocyanate. Two is…

Vreelandella aydingkolensis sp. nov., a polyhydroxybutyrate-producing halophilic bacterium isolated from Aydingkol Lake, China.

A Gram-negative, aerobic, halophilic bacterium, designated as strain TD01T, was isolated from an environmental sample collected from Aydingkol Lake, a saline lake in Xinjiang, China. Cells were rod-shaped and formed light yellow, circular, smooth and glossy colonies on Luria-Bertani agar supplemented with 60 g l-1 NaCl. Strain TD01T grew at 20-41 °C (optimum 30 °C), pH 5.0-10.0 (optimum 7.0-8.0) and in the presence of 2-20% (w/v) NaCl [optimum 8-11% (w/v)]. The strain was catalase- and oxidase-positive, reduced nitrate and did not grow anaerobically in the absence or presence of nitrate, nitri

Disturbance-Driven Reactive Oxygen Species Generation Promotes Organic Carbon Mineralization in Sediments of Lake Taihu.

Lake sediments are prone to disturbance from anthropogenic and natural processes, inducing O2 intrusion that can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the occurrence and accumulation of ROS production in O2-perturbed lake sediments are poorly documented. Herein, we investigated ROS production in oxygenated sediments from the sediment-water interface to a depth of 41 cm at 14 different sites in Lake Taihu, China. Results showed that ROS exhibited distinct depth-dependent variations, such that the concentrations of H2O2 and •OH increased with increasing depth, while those of O2•- peak

Spatial and Seasonal Variation of Heavy Metals and Associated Human Health Risks in Jabi Lake, Abuja, Nigeria.

Jabi Lake, an urban lake in Abuja, Nigeria, faces growing pressure from stormwater runoff and residential expansion. Lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd) were quantified by atomic absorption spectrometry in surface water from 29 sites across the dry and wet seasons of 2024-2025. Mean concentrations ranked Cr (0.023 mg L⁻¹) > Pb (0.006) > As (0.005) > Cd (0.0015 mg L⁻¹); most were within World Health Organization limits, though Pb and Cr were locally elevated. Wet-season concentrations were higher for all four metals (p < 0.01), confirming runoff as the dominant input pathwa

Winter ice regulates antibiotic resistance dynamics through seasonal genetic reservoirs across lake compartments.

Antibiotic resistance is a growing environmental and public-health threat, yet its seasonal dynamics in cold-region freshwater ecosystems remain poorly understood. Using year-round observations, metagenomic sequencing, and machine learning, we investigated antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) across ice, water, and sediment in an ice-covered lake. Winter ice contained significantly higher abundances of ARGs, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and microbial hosts than water and sediments. Driver analysis based on explainable machine learning showed that ARG dynamics in ice were primarily associated

Fine mapping and functional annotation of a QTL for resistance to tilapia lake virus in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Disease resistance is one of the main targets of animal breeding programs. In recent years, incorporating genomic information to accelerate genetic progress has become one of the priorities of the industry. Here, we combined population-scale whole-genome sequencing with differential gene expression and functional annotation analyses to study resistance to tilapia lake virus (TiLV) in a breeding Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) GIFT population. Fish with survival data from a natural TiLV outbreak were sampled and genotyped for 6.7 M SNPs using whole-genome resequencing and imputation. Our r

Trait-niche relationships accompany the increasing topological prominence of abundant bacteria along a glacial-lake chronosequence.

Accelerated glacial retreat driven by global warming has rapidly expanded glacial lakes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), creating natural laboratories for recording the successional trajectories of alpine aquatic ecosystems. However, how trophic succession during lake development drives microbial functional reorganization and reshapes core network positions remains unclear. Focusing on 15 glacial lakes on the QTP, this study integrated 16S rRNA gene sequencing, functional gene prediction, and topological network analysis to compare the adaptive trajectories of abundant and rare bacterial ta…

Analysis of biofilms formed by static culture of bacterial communities in the Inba floodway (Lake Inbanuma-Tokyo Bay).

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is a major threat to marine infrastructure, yet the bacterial communities on metal surfaces before corrosion remain poorly understood. In this study, environmental water collected across a salinity gradient (freshwater-brackish-seawater) in the Inba floodway (Lake Inbanuma to Tokyo Bay, Japan) was treated with the extremely low-nutrient R2A medium, after which stainless steel was immersed in the treated water. After 1 week of static incubation, biofilms were formed on stainless steel immersed in the water samples. The early-stage biofilm-forming bac

Climate extremes intensify global lake eutrophication by increasing the stress resistance of harmful bloom-forming algae.

Lake eutrophication is increasingly shaped by climate extremes, but how short-lived events yield persistent blooms remains unclear. Using gl … stabilisome formation, vertical migration, and bloom expansion are amplified, even in oligotrophic lakes. Compound climate extremes thus convert episodic disturbances into sustained ecological advantages, challenging nutrient-centric models and redefining bloom-risk prediction and management.

Sulfur and chlorine compounds in water and sediments of Mogilnoe Lake (Kildin Island, Barents Sea, Russian Federation).

The results of the study the distribution of sulfur and chlorine compounds in water and sediments of Mogilnoe Lake (Kildin Island, Barents Sea, Russian Federation) are presented. Mogilnoe Lake is a marine meromictic lake located in the high latitudes of the Russian Arctic. A unique feature of this lake is its subterranean connection with the sea, which makes it an analogue of tropical anchialine lakes. Research findings in 2019 confirmed the development of negative trends in the lake ecosystem, which have been recorded since the early twentieth century. It has been shown that over the past thi…

Cocaine pollution alters the movement and space use of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in a large natural lake.

Cocaine and its metabolites are increasingly being detected in aquatic environments worldwide. While previous research has demonstrated that these substances can affect brain function and behavior in wildlife, this research has exclusively been conducted under artificial laboratory conditions. How cocaine pollution affects animal behavior in the wild is, thus, unknown. Here, we combine slow-release chemical implants with acoustic telemetry tracking to reveal how environmentally realistic levels of cocaine and its main metabolite, benzoylecgonine, affect the movement of Atlantic salmon (Salmo s

Anthropogenic nutrient discharge and microbial community shifts associated with typhoon-driven runoff in an artificial coastal lake.

This study investigated changes in nutrient sources and microbial community composition across a typhoon-associated runoff period in Lake Sihwa, an anthropogenically influenced artificial coastal lake. Stable isotope analyses (δ13CPOC, δ15NPN, δ15NNO₃, and δ18ONO₃) and water-column environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding were combined to characterize nutrient sources and compare ecological conditions between the pre- and post-typhoon surveys. Before the typhoon-associated rainfall period, nitrate inputs were primarily associated with urban runoff, whereas particulate organic matter (POM) reflec

Socioecological drivers and dimensions of household water insecurity among people with HIV in the Lake Victoria region, Kenya.

Despite progress in HIV management, resource insecurities continue to threaten the gains of antiretroviral therapy among people with HIV in resource-limited settings. Water insecurity, common in areas with high HIV burden, remains an underexplored barrier to optimal HIV care. This study assessed socioecological drivers and dimensions as determinants of water insecurity among 434 adults with HIV receiving care in public hospitals in a high HIV prevalence region of western Kenya. We used the 12-item Household Water Insecurity Experiences Scale and found a water insecurity prevalence of 64.3% amo

Antimicrobial effects of great salt lake mineral salts on oral pathogenic bacteria: Implications for oral care.

This study investigated the antimicrobial effects of purified natural mineral salts from the Great Salt Lake on oral pathogenic bacteria. Salts rich in sodium, calcium, potassium, and magnesium effectively inhibit the growth and biofilm formation of cariogenic and periodontopathogenic bacteria at lower concentrations than does sodium chloride. These findings suggest the potential applications of these salts in oral care products such as toothpaste and mouthwash.
