A relation between magnesium (Mg) status and mood disorders has been suggested, but evidence remains inconsistent. Therefore, we examined in mice whether Mg-depletion would alter behavior evaluated in established animal models of depression and anxiety and whether these effects would be sensitive to antidepressants. Compared to control mice fed with normal diet, mice receiving a low Mg diet (10% of daily requirement) for several weeks displayed increased immobility time in the forced swim test, indicating enhanced depression-like behavior. In addition, the partial Mg-depletion increased anxiet

The purpose of this study was to assess whether dietary carbohydrate could differentially influence the consequences of magnesium deficiency with particular emphasis on lipid metabolism and oxidative stress. Rats were fed a sucrose based or starch based diet either adequate or deficient in magnesium for two weeks. Magnesium deficient rats, as compared with rats fed magnesium adequate diets, displayed the usual decrease in plasma magnesium concentration. The classic symptoms of inflammation including hyperaemia, increased number of blood leukocytes and enlarged spleen weight were observed in th…

To discover the details of the effects of magnesium (Mg) deficiency on kidney function, the course of changes in N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity in the urine and in urinary albumin excretion were examined in rats fed a Mg-deficient diet. NAG activity in the urine and urinary albumin excretion in rats fed the Mg-deficient diet significantly increased from 7 d until the end of the feeding period. We suggest that Mg-deficient diet rapidly induces kidney function insufficiency.

Quinolones are antibacterial agents that have the potential to induce Achilles tendon disorders - such as tendinitis or even ruptures - in p … om magnesium-deficient dogs. In conclusion, rather low doses of a fluoroquinolone or a diet-induced magnesium deficiency caused similar biochemical alterations in the soluble fraction of proteins from canine tendons. These findings support our hypothesis that quinolone-induced toxic effects on connective tissue structures are due to the magnesium-antagonistic effects …

The effect of priming stromal-vascular cells in primary cultures with magnesium-deficient (MgD) media on preadipocyte differentiation was studied. Cultures were derived from dorsal subcutaneous fat tissue of young pigs and maintained 3 d in serum-free control or MgD Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium, 3 d in 10% fetal bovine serum and dexamethasone, and 6 d in insulin. At d 12 of culture, immunocytochemical and glycerophosphate dehydrogenase assays indicated depressed adipocyte differentiation in the MgD groups. Cultures were enriched for preadipocytes up to 50% of total cells. On the third da

The effects of nifedipine on the survival rate and the cardiovascular calcinosis were investigated in dietary magnesium (Mg)-deficient mice. Male mice aged 8 to 10 weeks were fed with a diet which was either normal (0.07%) or deficient (0.007%) in Mg for 30 d. Nifedipine was added to the Mg-deficient diet for 30 d in a concentration of 1000 ppm. About 65% of Mg-deficient mice died within 30 d. In contrast, all the nifedipine-treated mice survived for 30 d. Mg-deficient mice showed hypomagnesaemia and hypocalcaemia which were not influenced by nifedipine treatment. Aortic and cardiac calcium co

Nutritional deficiencies of magnesium or zinc lead to a progressive and often marked growth retardation. We have evaluated the effect of Mg and Zn deficiency on growth, serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (s-IGF-1), growth hormone (s-GH) and insulin (s-insulin) in young rats. In 3-week-old rats maintained on Mg-deficient fodder for 12 d the weight gain was reduced by about 34%, compared with pair-fed controls. This was accompanied by a 44% reduction in s-IGF-1, while s-insulin showed no decrease. After 3 weeks on Mg-deficient fodder, growth had ceased while serum Mg (s-Mg) and s-IGF-1 were redu

An intravenous magnesium-loading test with 30 mmol/L of magnesium was used to evaluate the magnesium status in 38 patients with ischemic hea … n did the control group (1.4 mmol/L [3.4 mg/dL]). This 34% magnesium retention points to a state of magnesium deficiency in patients with IHD. However, since the patients with and without AMI did not differ, the observations do not indicate that AMI is associated with a more severe magnesium deficiency than that found in other IHD patients without AMI. When the patien …

In young rats, some effects of magnesium (Mg) depletion in the diet on histamine content and histidine decarboxylase (HDC) activity in spleen were studied in comparison with those in the skin and peritoneal mast cells. In the case of the young rats fed a Mg-deficient diet (0.001% Mg), the splenic histamine contents increased to levels about 1.3, 2.8 and 23 times as high as those in the rats fed a control diet (0.07% Mg) on the 4th, 6th and 8th day, respectively; histamine contents in the peritoneal mast cells also increased to about 1.2 and 1.8 times the control levels on the 6th and 8th day,

BACKGROUND: Magnesium deficiency contributes to atherogenesis partly by promoting the dysfunction of endothelial cells, which are critical in vascular homeostasis and diseases. Since EDF-1 and PPARγ regulate crucial endothelial activities, we investigated the modulation of these proteins involved in lipogenesis as well the deposition of lipids in human endothelial cells cultured in different concentrations of magnesium.
METHODS: Human endothelial cells from the umbilical vein were cultured in medium containing from 0.1 to 5 mM magnesium for 24 h. The levels of EDF-1 and PPARγ were visualized …

Magnesium (Mg2+) is an essential mineral for maintaining biological functions. One major action of Mg2+ in the brain is modulating the voltage-dependent blockade of N-methyl-d-aspartate type glutamate receptors, thereby controlling their opening, which is crucial for synaptic plasticity. Therefore, Mg2+ has been shown to play critical roles in learning and memory, and synaptic plasticity. However, the effects of dietary Mg2+ deficiency (MgD) on learning and memory and the morphology of neurons contributing to memory performance have not been examined in depth. Here, we show that MgD impairs hi

Seedlings of Ponkan (Citrus reticulata) were irrigated with nutrient solution containing 0 (Mg-deficiency) or 1mM MgSO4 (control) every two day for 16 weeks. Thereafter, we examined magnesium (Mg)-deficiency-induced changes in leaf and root gas exchange, total soluble proteins and gene expression. Mg-deficiency lowered leaf CO2 assimilation, and increased leaf dark respiration. However, Mg-deficient roots had lower respiration. Total soluble protein level was not significantly altered by Mg-deficiency in roots, but was lower in Mg-deficient leaves than in controls. Using cDNA-AFLP, we obtained

Magnesium (Mg2+) is an essential mineral nutrient, necessary for many biochemical reactions in the human body, including energy metabolism, protein and DNA synthesis, maintenance of the electrical potential of nervous and cardiac tissues, control of blood glucose, and regulation of blood pressure. However, currently, the world population suffers from a severe problem because the consumption of Mg2+ in the diet is deficient and generalized in the populations. Mg2+ deficiency causes oxidative stress (OS) due to the increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) that originate from mitochondrial dysfu
