Ferrate(VI)-prompted removal of metals in aqueous media: mechanistic delineation of enhanced efficiency via metal entrenchment in magnetic oxides.

The removal efficiency of heavy metal ions (cadmium(II), Cd(II); cobalt(II), Co(II); nickel(II), Ni(II); copper(II), Cu(II)) by potassium ferrate(VI) (K2FeO4, Fe(VI)) was studied as a function of added amount of Fe(VI) (or Fe) and varying pH. At pH = 6.6, the effective removal of Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) from water was observed at a low Fe-to-heavy metal ion ratio (Fe/M(II) = 2:1) while a removal efficiency of 70% was seen for Cd(II) ions at a high Fe/Cd(II) weight ratio of 15:1. The role of ionic radius and metal valence state was explored by conducting similar removal experiments using Al(

Advances in Anthrax Detection: Overview of Bioprobes and Biosensors.

Anthrax is an infectious disease caused by Bacillus anthracis. Although anthrax commonly affects domestic and wild animals, it causes a rare but lethal infection in humans. A variety of techniques have been introduced and evaluated to detect anthrax using cultures, polymerase chain reaction, and immunoassays to address the potential threat of anthrax being used as a bioweapon. The high-potential harm of anthrax in bioterrorism requires sensitive and specific detection systems that are rapid, field-ready, and real-time monitoring. Here, we provide a systematic overview of anthrax detection prob

An ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence immunoassay for carbohydrate antigen 19-9 in serum based on antibody labeled Fe3O4 nanoparticles as capture probes and graphene/CdTe quantum dot bionanoconjugates as signal amplifiers.

The CdTe quantum dots (QDs), graphene nanocomposite (CdTe-G) and dextran-Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles have been synthesized for developing an ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunoassay for Carcinoembryonic antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) in serums. Firstly, the capture probes (CA 19-9 Ab1/Fe3O4) for enriching CA 19-9 were synthesized by immobilizing the CA 19-9's first antibody (CA 19-9 Ab1) on magnetic nanoparticles (dextran-Fe3O4). Secondly, the signal probes (CA 19-9 Ab2/CdTe-G), which can emit an ECL signal, were formed by attaching the secondary CA 19-9 antibody (CA 19-9 Ab2) to the

Characteristics of magnetic labeling on liver tumors with anti-alpha-fetoprotein-mediated Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles.

For preoperative and intraoperative detection of tumor distribution, numerous multimodal contrast agents, such as magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with several examination indicators, are currently in development. However, complex materials, configuration, and cost are required for multimodal contrast agents, accompanied by a high possibility of toxicity and low popularity in clinics. Nevertheless, the magnetic labeling of MNPs using bioprobes should be feasible not only in preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but also in intraoperative examination based on other magnetic properties. Luminescent/magnetic hybrid nanoparticles with folate-conjugated peptide composites for tumor-targeted drug delivery.

We developed a novel chitosan-based luminescent/magnetic hybrid nanoparticles with folate-conjugated tetrapeptide composites (CLMNPs-tetrapeptide-FA) by conjugation in situ. First, chitosan, CdTe quantum dots (QDs), and superparamagnetic iron oxide were directly gelled into ternary hybrid nanogels. Subsequently, tetrapeptides (GFFG and LGPV) and folate were conjugated orderly into the hybrid nanoparticles. The morphology, composition, and properties of the as-prepared copolymers have also been characterized and determined using TEM, EDX, XRD, FTIR spectra, DLS, fluorescence spectroscopy, VSM,

Magnetic resonance imaging-guided balloon angioplasty of coarctation of the aorta: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: MRI guidance of percutaneous transluminal balloon angioplasty (PTA) of aortic coarctation (CoA) would be desirable for continuous visualization of anatomy and to eliminate x-ray exposure. The aim of this study was (1) to determine the suitability of MRI-controlled PTA using the iron oxide-based contrast medium Resovist (ferucarbotran) for catheter visualization and (2) to subsequently apply this technique in a pilot study with patients with CoA. METHODS AND RESULTS: The MRI contrast-to-noise ratio and artifact behavior of Resovist-treated balloon catheters was optimized in in vitr

Influence of PEG Molecular Weight on Washout Resistance and Deposition Efficiency of Magnetoresponsive Nanoclusters Under Pulsatile Flow for Magnetic Drug Targeting.

Background/Objectives: Magnetic drug targeting (MDT) using polyethene glycol (PEG)-coated magnetoresponsive nanoclusters (MNCs) can localize therapeutics, but washout from high-shear arterial flow limits efficacy. This study assesses how PEG molecular weight influences MNC deposition and washout resistance under a pulsatile flow. Methods: Magnetite MNCs were synthesized via solvothermal polyol reactions and PEGylated with PEG-2000, PEG-6000, or PEG-10,000. Characterization included TEM, DLS, zeta potential, FTIR, TGA, XPS, magnetic analysis, and rheology. In vitro assays used a 3 mm diameter g

Core-shell magnetic molecularly imprinted microspheres for selective extraction and determination of Schisandrol A with hepatoprotective evaluation in zebrafish larvae.

A core-shell magnetic surface molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized using chitosan-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4@CS) as the support and Schisandrol A as the template for selective recognition. After optimization of adsorption conditions, static and dynamic binding experiments demonstrated high selectivity toward Schisandrol A, with an imprinting factor of 4.556. Based on this material, a magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (MSPE-HPLC) method was established for the enrichment and quantitative determination of Schisandrol A in

Glucose-fueled and wash-free immunoassay platform employing biogenic magnetic nanoparticle displaying antibody (bioMagbody).

Wash-free immunoassays with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)-level performance remain challenging because peroxidase-based signal generation typically requires multiple washing steps and the handling of unstable H2O2. Here, we report a bead-based and glucose-fueled ELISA-like platform that co-localizes target capture and catalytic amplification on biogenic magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with peroxidase-like activity from magnetotactic bacteria. To generate biogenic antibody-displaying magnetic nanoparticle (bioMagbody), we used the SpyCatcher/SpyTag (SC/ST) system as a covalent protein

Alternating magnetic field-driven superparamagnetic iron/carbon nanoparticles induce significant in vivo tumor reduction in breast and prostate cancers.

In this study, superparamagnetic iron-carbon (Fe/C) nanoparticles (SPINs) engineered for alternating magnetic field (AMF)-based cancer therapy were synthesized using a co-precipitation approach with optimized precursor ratios. The resulting nanoparticles exhibited high magnetic performance, achieving saturation magnetizations of up to 149 emu/g, which are favorable for efficient AMF-mediated therapeutic activation. Consistent with this magnetic behavior, our previously published in vitro cytotoxicity studies demonstrated significant dose-dependent reductions in cell viability at relatively low

Molybdate-driven and cucurbit[7]uril-assembled ultrasensitive miRNA fluorescence sensor.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of endogenous, non-coding, single-stranded RNA molecules that are typically 20-25 nucleotides in length. The expression levels of miRNAs in blood, tissue, and other samples are characteristically altered in several disease states. The detection of miRNAs represents a promising avenue for the early diagnosis of various diseases. Consequently, there is a clear need to enhance the sensitivity of miRNA detection to facilitate more accurate disease detection. A fluorescent biosensor was developed that utilizes supramolecular host-guest interactions for assembly and Mo

An integrated preventive and therapeutic magnetic nanoparticle loaded with rhamnolipid and vancomycin for combating subgingival biofilms.

OBJECTIVES: Mechanical debridement supplemented with antibacterial agents effectively eradicates subgingival biofilms formed in the periodontal pockets of severe periodontitis patients. However, the available antimicrobial agents have limited penetrating ability to kill the bacteria encased in the deep layers of biofilms. This study aimed to fabricate a novel magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) loaded with rhamnolipid (RL) and vancomycin (Vanc, Vanc/RL-Ag@Fe3O4) to combat subgingival biofilms. METHODS: The multispecies subgingival biofilm was formed by periodontal pathogens, including Streptococcus o

Greatly isolated heterogeneous circulating tumor cells using hybrid engineered cell membrane-camouflaged magnetic nanoparticles.

BACKGROUND: Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are considered as a useful biomarker for early cancer diagnosis, which play a crucial role in metastatic process. Unfortunately, the tumor heterogeneity and extremely rare occurrence rate of CTCs among billions of interfering leukocytes seriously hamper the sensitivity and purity of CTCs isolation. METHODS: To address these, we firstly used microfluidic chips to detect the broad-spectrum of triple target combination biomarkers in CTCs of 10 types of cancer patients, including EpCAM, EGFR and Her2. Then, we constructed hybrid engineered cell membrane-

Chitosan Functionalized Magnetic Nanoparticles to Provide Neural Regeneration and Recovery after Experimental Model Induced Peripheral Nerve Injury.

(1) Background: Peripheral nerve injuries have a great impact on a patient's quality of life and a generally poor outcome regarding functional recovery. Lately, studies have focused on different types of nanoparticles and various natural substances for the treatment of peripheral nerve injuries. This is the case of chitosan, a natural compound from the crustaceans' exoskeleton. The present study proposes to combine chitosan benefic properties to the nanoparticles' ability to transport different substances to specific locations and evaluate the effects of magnetic nanoparticles functionalized w

Magnetic Targeting and Ultrasound Activation of Liposome-Microbubble Conjugate for Enhanced Delivery of Anticancer Therapies.

Effective delivery of chemotherapeutics with minimal toxicity and maximal outcome is clinically important but technically challenging. Here, we synthesize a complex of doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded magneto-liposome (DOX-ML) microbubbles (DOX-ML-MBs) for magnetically responsive and ultrasonically sensitive delivery of anticancer therapies with enhanced efficiency. Citrate-stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles (MNs) of 6.8 ± 1.36 nm were synthesized, loaded with DOX in the core of oligolamellar vesicles of 172 ± 9.2 nm, and covalently conjugated with perfluorocarbon (PFC)-gas-loaded microbubbles to for

Glutamic acid-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles for tumor-targeted imaging and therapeutics.

We have developed surface functionalised Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) based system that can be used for tumor-targeted multimodal therapies and MR imaging. Biocompatible, non-essential amino acid (glutamic acid) was introduced onto the surface of Fe3O4 MNPs to provide functional sites for binding of chemotherapeutic drugs. These glutamic acid-coated Fe3O4 MNPs (GAMNPs) exhibit good water-dispersibility, magnetic responsivity and pH dependent charge conversal feature. The magnetic core as well as organic shell of GAMNPs was characterized by XRD, TEM, DLS, FTIR, PPMS and UV-visible spectr

DNA enzyme mediated ratiometric fluorescence assay for Pb(II) ion using magnetic nanosphere-loaded gold nanoparticles and CdSe/ZnS quantum dots.

Based on the inner filter effect mechanism of quantum dots, a ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe was constructed for the determination of Pb(II) ion. Green emitting quantum dots conjugated with DNA substrate (DNA2) acted as donors providing green fluorescence, while gold nanoparticles coupled with DNA enzyme (DNA1) as acceptors quench the green fluorescence. Meanwhile, Fe3O4 nanosphere served as magnetic substrates to facilitate separation process and red fluorescence as an "inner rule" to eliminate the background signal. In the presence of Pb(II) ion, the DNA1 specifically recognize and captu

In vitro detection of in vitro secondary mechanisms of genotoxicity induced by engineered nanomaterials.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that toxicological evaluation of engineered nanomaterials (NMs) is vital to ensure the health and safety of those exposed to them. Further, there is a distinct need for the development of advanced physiologically relevant in vitro techniques for NM hazard prediction due to the limited predictive power of current in vitro models and the unsustainability of conducting nano-safety evaluations in vivo. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop alternative in vitro approaches to assess the potential of NMs to induce genotoxicity by secondary mechanisms. RESU
