The study was made to ascertain whether the radiographs of the mandible of patients with familial polyposis of the colon show osteomas. Orthopantomography of the mandible was taken in 10 cases of familial polyposis of the colon and 6 cases of the unaffected family members. And radiographic and histological studies were performed in another autopsied case. As a result, radiographic studies revealed sclerotic masses of the mandible in 10 of the 11 cases. In some cases, the changes were also found in the maxilla. The number of sclerotic masses ranged from 2 to 11, and they were associated with od

The results of computed tomography in 89 patients with tumours of the epipharynx and oropharynx involving the mouth are compared with the findings of other forms of clinical examination. In 26 patients, CT provided additional relevant information, in eight patients CT provided less information than clinical examination. The value of CT depended largely on the localisation of the tumour; the poorest results were found in tumours of the tonsils and the soft palate. CT provided additional information most commonly with large tumours, since these are frequently associated with bone destruction, lo

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the postoperative complications of reconstruction of mandible defect with titanium reconstruction plate.
METHODS: A total of 111 cases of the mandibular defect caused by various reasons and repaired by titanium reconstruction plate in the Department Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University from 2003 to 2012 were collected and followed up. The complications were analyzed.
RESULTS: Thirty-seven percent of 111 cases showed long term complications. The titanium fracture was the main complication(16%[18/111]), followed by stress-shiel

PURPOSE: Jacob's disease (JD) is an uncommon disorder that presents as pseudojoint formation between the enlarged mandibular coronoid process and the zygoma, resulting in mouth opening limitation (MOL). Intraosseous lipoma (IOL) usually presents in the long bone, but it is very rare in the mandible. The authors present a rare case of JD and coexisting IOL in the same anatomical area and discuss diagnosis and surgical intervention.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: The patient was a 39-year-old Korean female with MOL. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a large lobulated mass with fat-spec

A case of a retained root tip simulating apical periodontitis on radiographic examination is described. The retained root tip, originating from the left lower first molar, floated under the left lower second premolar apical region mimicking apical periodontitis. It appeared as an ill-defined periapical radiolucency containing a smaller radiodense mass on radiograph. The differential diagnosis included focal sclerosing osteomyelitis (condensing osteitis) and ossifying fibroma. Upon exicisional biopsy, a retained root associated with granulation tissue was found. After 1-year follow-up, the pati

Surgical removal of impacted lower third molars is widely carried out in general dental practice and in many institutional clinics. Despite the fact that there are well established indications for the removal of impacted lower third molars, prophylactic removal of these teeth is still being universally practiced. Some reports have estimated that the proportion of impacted third molars that are removed when no clinically sound justification for surgery is present is between 18% and 50.7%. Justifications for prophylactic surgery include the need to minimize the risk of disease (cysts and tumors)

INTRODUCTION: The posterior border of the mandibular ramus can be used as a pedicled graft for reconstruction of the condyle. This article describes a technique that is better in certain situations than the use of other autogenous grafts or alloplastic materials.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three adult patients, two with osteochondroma and one with hyperplasia were treated by condylectomy and simultaneous reconstruction with the pedicled posterior mandibular border. A meticulous oblique osteotomy and reinsertion of the lateral pterygoid muscle was performed.
RESULTS: In all three cases an immediat

The mandible coronoid process is another site subject to various pathoses that may result in limited jaw movement. Six different pathoses that prevented the free rotation of the coronoid are presented. Differential diagnosis and treatment approach are emphasized.

The authors report on the management of a patient who presented with a pathologic mandibular fracture as the initial presenting sign of multiple myeloma. The patient underwent surgical resection of the mandibular area involved by the pathologic fracture and osteolytic lesion. Then, he was prescribed combined thalidomide, melphalan, and prednisone for systemic treatment. The patient tolerated his treatment well and is currently being followed up on outpatient basis. The treatment of a mandibular pathologic fracture associated with a solitary multiple myeloma lesion should include a segmental re

INTRODUCTION: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a severe complication of radiation therapy (RT). A triggering factor is frequently present. It is often a dental, periodental, or surgical traumatism. We report the case of a bilateral ORN: the first lesion appeared 3months after the end of RT around the osteosynthesis plate and was treated by mandibular resection. The second lesion appeared 40months after RT on the opposite side, due to peri-implantitis. Dental implants had been inserted 10years before cancer therapy. No case of ORN in post-implantation RT had been previously reported.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to locate the mandibular canal in relation to the impacted mandibular third molar by conventional cross-sectional tomography.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Conventional axially corrected cross-sectional tomograms of 347 successive impacted mandibular third molars of 234 patients referred for removal of the impacted teeth were acquired with a Scanora x-ray unit. The images were assessed for location of the mandibular canal and the impacted mandibular third molar. Descriptive analysis was performed.
RESULTS: Examination of the tomograms revealed the alveolar ne

The natural mandible has 2 arcs, the marginal arc and the occlusal arc. The marginal arc is situated along the lower margin of the mandible and affects the contour of the lower third of the face. The occlusal arc is situated along the dental arc and affects the stability of prosthodontics. The gap between these 2 arcs widens in the molar area. Our developed concept of "double arc reconstruction" involves making these 2 arcs for the reconstructed mandible. For the double-barrel fibula reconstruction, 2 bone segments are used to make both arcs. For reconstructions using the iliac crest, the doub

The pathological fracture of the mandible is a rare and undesirable consequence of cancerous bone invasion. This study investigates the retrospective incidence of this phenomenon in diagnosed cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the mandibular region, and reviews the methods of treatment used. A total of 194 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the mandibular region were observed. Only six cases of pathological fractures were found. The treatment was conditioned by the need to eliminate the tumor, and was carried out in different methods according to the individual cases. This study underli

Malignant melanoma (MM) with multiple metastases (including the oral mucosa) is an extremely rare condition that is difficult to manage due to its complexity. This article presents the case of a 27-year-old man who first developed MM on the scalp, which subsequently metastasized to the mandible, parotid gland, infratemporal fossa, and the cervical regions of the larynx, kidneys, liver, and lungs. The findings of the present case report are compared with 31 other cases published in the English literature. Multiple metastases of MMs in the head and neck region are rare and generally are associat

This study was performed to evaluate the outcomes of combined bilobed trapezius myocutaneous and scapula osteomyocutaneous flaps for the restoration of through-and-through defects of the mandible. The subjects were six patients with recurrent malignant tumours who underwent salvage surgeries and reconstruction with combined flaps based on the transverse cervical vessels (TCVs). All patients had combined bone (four type H, one type LCL, and one type C) and extensive soft tissue defects (through-and-through defects) following salvage surgery. All tumours were removed and the complex defects rest
