A Longitudinal Comparison Between Depressed Patients Receiving Electroconvulsive Therapy and Healthy Controls on Specific Memory Functions.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the short- and long-term effect of electroconvulsive therapy on verbal, visual, and autobiographical memory functions in patients treated for a severe depressive episode. Patients were compared with healthy controls undergoing neurocognitive assessments at the same time points to account for normal forgetfulness and potential learning effects. METHODS: A pre-post intervention design included patients (n = 38) and controls (n = 16) referred to Haukeland University Hospital for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) from September 2013 to September 2018. Patients diagnosed with a

Adults with developmental dyslexia show selective impairments in time-based and self-initiated prospective memory: Self-report and clinical evidence.

BACKGROUND: Prospective memory (PM; memory for delayed intentions) would seem to be impaired in dyslexia but evidence is currently limited in scope. AIMS: There is a need, therefore, firstly, to explore PM under controlled conditions using a broader range of PM tasks than used previously and, secondly, to determine whether objectively measured and self-reported PM problems can be found in the same individuals with dyslexia. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: The responses of 30 adults with dyslexia were compared with those of 30 IQ-matched adults without dyslexia on a self-report and a clinical measure

Anosognosia, autobiographical memory and self knowledge in Alzheimer's disease.

This article explores the relationship between lack of awareness of neuropsychological deficit, also termed anosognosia, and loss of self knowledge in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Specifically, it considers the hypothesis that anosognosia in AD can in part be explained by a loss of mnemonic ability in which knowledge about self-ability is degraded. To ground this hypothesis, we review evidence suggesting failure to update personal knowledge concerning task efficacy, loss of recollection with relative amplification of semanticization processes and loss of an updated representation of the self. We

Protective Effects of Socioeconomic Status and Lifestyle on Amyloid- and White Matter Hyperintensity-Related Longitudinal Brain Atrophy and Cognitive Decline.

OBJECTIVE: Socioeconomic status (SES) and lifestyle activities (LA) are strongly related, and both are associated with dementia risk. We investigated the influence of SES and LA on brain atrophy and cognitive decline considering amyloid-beta (Aβ) positron emission tomography and white matter hyperintensity (WMH) load. METHODS: We investigated 221 older adults (mean age, 67.1 ± 8.2 years) who underwent cognitive testing annually over a median follow-up period of 3.4 years. Longitudinal T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging was available for 181 participants. Measures of SES and LA were collec

Hippocampal Functions Modulate Transfer-Appropriate Cortical Representations Supporting Subsequent Memory.

The hippocampus plays a central role as a coordinate system or index of information stored in neocortical loci. Nonetheless, it remains unclear how hippocampal processes integrate with cortical information to facilitate successful memory encoding. Thus, the goal of the current study was to identify specific hippocampal-cortical interactions that support object encoding. We collected fMRI data while 19 human participants (7 female and 12 male) encoded images of real-world objects and tested their memory for object concepts and image exemplars (i.e., conceptual and perceptual memory). Representa

Shared and distinct cognitive processes across multiple virtual navigation tasks.

Although virtual navigation tasks are widely used to investigate human spatial navigation, the processes underlying behavior across tasks remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we administered four virtual navigation tasks assessing spatial learning, path integration, and wayfinding in a single cohort. Participants additionally completed four event segmentation tasks to examine links with episodic memory. Across tasks, spatial cues such as landmarks or the arena center improved performance, with better outcomes when navigating near these cues and when goals were nearby. Despite these s

Proteomics signatures associated with cognitive trajectories: evidence from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.

Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) pose a growing global health challenge, with early detection critical to slowing cognitive decline and prevent ADRD. We analyzed high-throughput plasma proteomics in 2,460 cognitively healthy adults from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) to identify proteins linked to 15-year cognitive trajectories, including verbal fluency, episodic memory, and orientation. Mixed-effect linear models revealed 34 proteins associated with faster orientation decline and 18 with accelerated episodic memory decline. Enrichment analyses implicate extrac

Despite dense amnesia, patients with hippocampal lesions show partially intact navigation for recent and remotely learned environments.

The extent to which medial temporal lobe amnesia affects recently compared to remotely formed memories remains debated. Some studies have investigated this issue by employing either verbal recall of routes or map drawing, suggesting profound loss of recent yet largely intact remote spatial memory. Here, we studied navigation in two patients with amnesia and their matched controls by recreating virtual versions of their recent and remote neighborhoods. Both patients showed largely intact navigation of both their recent and remote neighborhoods, and, in most cases, navigated them better than a c

Executive Functions are Independently Associated with Cognitive Dispersion in HIV Disease.

OBJECTIVE: People with HIV (PWH) can demonstrate elevated cognitive intraindividual variability (IIV-dispersion) that is associated with everyday functioning problems. Higher IIV-dispersion is theorized to reflect lapses in executive aspects of cognitive control, but few studies have directly evaluated this possibility. METHOD: 72 PWH completed the Cogstate and clinical measures of executive functions, psychomotor speed, and episodic memory. IIV-dispersion was calculated with the coefficient of variation (CoV) from six age-adjusted Cogstate subtest scores. RESULTS: Multiple regression showed

Category specificity in normal episodic learning: applications to object recognition and category-specific agnosia.

Studies of patients with category-specific agnosia (CSA) have given rise to multiple theories of object recognition, most of which assume the existence of a stable, abstract semantic memory system. We applied an episodic view of memory to questions raised by CSA in a series of studies examining normal observers' recall of newly learned attributes of familiar objects. Subjects first learned to associate arbitrarily assigned colors or textures to objects in a training phase, and then attempted to report the newly learned attribute of each object in a recall task. Our subjects' pattern of recall

Severe anterograde amnesia with extensive hippocampal degeneration in a case of rapidly progressive frontotemporal dementia.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is usually characterized as a spectrum of relatively slowly progressive disorders with largely focal frontal or temporal presentations. The development of clinical and research criteria for discriminating FTD from Alzheimer's disease has relied, in part, on the relative preservation of episodic memory in FTD. We present a patient with FTD who, in addition to the more typical behavioural and language deficits, had a profound anterograde amnesia at the time of diagnosis. Neuroimaging confirmed atrophy of frontal and temporal lobes bilaterally, most marked in the ant

Enhanced memory function and reduced perceived stress in older adults with self-reported memory complaints following strawberry leaf extract supplementation: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Age-related changes in cognitive performance represent a growing concern for older adults. Strawberry leaf extract (SLE), a polyphenol-rich botanical supplement containing ellagitannins, has been suggested to exert neuroprotective effects based on preclinical evidence. However, to date, no human studies have evaluated its potential benefits on cognitive performance. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of SLE supplementation on cognitive performance (i.e., memory abilities and executive functions) and mental well-being (stress level, sleep quality and fatigue

Inhibiting the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex selectively enhances unsupervised statistical learning.

The brain must balance the automatic extraction of regularities with top-down cognitive control, yet the hemispheric contributions of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) remain unresolved. Here, we applied inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation to the left, right, or bilateral DLPFC in 95 adults during a probabilistic sequence learning task. We found that inhibiting the right and bilateral DLPFC enhanced statistical learning compared to sham stimulation. Contrary to the hypothesis that interference from existing knowledge would mediate this effect, episodic memory perfo

Place and behavioral modulation of hippocampal neurons during immobility.

Behavioral state fluctuations profoundly impact episodic memory processing. To explore the underlying mechanisms, we recorded CA1 place cells in head-fixed male mice and focused on awake immobility to capture spontaneous behavioral state fluctuations by facial motion, pupillometry, and local field potential (LFP) analysis. We found that during awake immobility, the duration of spontaneous whisker-pad motion events correlated with ongoing levels of arousal and modulated both the frequency and the power of theta oscillations. CA1 place cells continued to encode location during immobility, with t

Does Perceived Generativity Mediate the Association Between Optimism and Cognitive Function Over Time? Findings from Midlife in the United States Study.

Cognitive function is a vital component of healthy aging. However, whether a persistently high optimism benefits late-life cognitive function is debatable. The current study examined associations between high optimism status, perceived generativity, and cognitive functions across adulthood. Data were from waves 2 and 3 (2004-14) of the Midlife in the United States study. We used structural equation modeling to examine whether participants' (N = 2,205; Mage = 65 ± 11) persistent high optimism predicts better cognitive functions over time, compared to high optimism at only one time-point or not

Detecting cognitive changes in preclinical Alzheimer's disease: A review of its feasibility.

Significant progress has been made in characterizing the biological changes occurring in preclinical Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cognitive dysfunction has been viewed, however, as a late-stage phenomenon, despite increasing evidence that changes may be detected in the decades preceding dementia. In the absence of comprehensive evidence-based guidelines for preclinical cognitive assessment, longitudinal cohort and neuroimaging studies have been reviewed to determine the temporal order and brain biomarker correlates of specific cognitive functions. Episodic memory decline was observed to be the mo

Diagnostic Images for Mild Cognitive Impairment Are Sensitive to Alzheimer's Disease Biomarkers and Reveal Abnormal Scene Processing.

Research on visual episodic memory impairment in Alzheimer's disease often focuses on memory processes rather than the specific content of the images being remembered. We previously showed that patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a transitional stage that may precede Alzheimer's disease, can memorize certain images well, indicating that episodic memory is not uniformly impaired. Conversely, other specific images could not be memorized by MCI patients and were instead diagnostic for distinguishing MCI from healthy older adults. In this study, we investigate whether poor memory for th

Body Mass Index and Decline in Cognitive Function in Older Black and White Persons.

BACKGROUND: While body mass index (BMI) is higher in black compared to white persons, little is known about BMI and change in cognition in cohorts with a large proportion of blacks. We examine relations of BMI with decline in global cognition and five cognitive domains, in older blacks and whites, and determine whether relations differ by race. METHODS: Participants were 2,134 persons without baseline dementia (33% black; 75% women; mean age =77.9 [range 53-100] and education = 14.7 years, Mini-Mental State Examination = 28.0), enrolled in one of two longitudinal, community-based cohort studi

Implicit boundaries are remembered better than non-boundaries in statistical learning.

Changes in temporal context have been shown to impact episodic memory of the "boundary" items involved in creating this temporal context. However, in most prior studies, changes in temporal context have been operationalised explicitly, typically through perceptually obvious visual or auditory stimuli that form a boundary between the previous and current context. In this work, we explore how recognition of items is impacted when temporal context change is operationalised implicitly through the order of presentation during the study phase. 59 participants were exposed to a rotation judgment cove
