Effects of echinocytosis on blood rheology and exercise performance were evaluated for 5 Thoroughbreds. Echinocytosis was induced by administration of furosemide (1 mg/kg of body weight, IM, q 12 h) for 4 days. Furosemide treatment resulted in decreases in serum sodium and serum chloride concentrations and in RBC chloride and potassium concentrations. Echinocytosis was associated with increased RBC density as determined by RBC density gradient centrifugation. However, samples containing echinocytes were more filterable than control samples, indicating that echinocytes were not rigid cells. Ery

This study was performed to determine whether dexamethasone (DEX) had an effect on calcium-activated potassium channels (K(Ca) channels) and Occludin protein in blood-brain tumor barrier (BTB). Using a rat brain glioma model, we found that the expression of K(Ca) channels protein and Occludin protein was significantly increased in brain tumor tissue after DEX treatment for 3 days. Compared with non-DEX-treated animals, Evans Blue levels were greatly attenuated in DEX-treated animals. These effects were significantly reversed by the glucocorticoid receptor antagonist RU38486. In addition, DEX t

In order to examine the causes of endometrial bleeding following IUD insertion, 22 samples of endometrium from women with an IUD in place for between 1-20 years or more and 10 cases of endometrium without an IUD and with normal menstrual cycles as controls were studied. The quantitative histologic method was utilized to demonstrate the correlation between vascular changes and clinical bleeding. The results indicate that the concentration and expansion of microvascularity, especially the capillary, venule, and venous sinus, increased significantly in most of the IUD-exposed endometriums (75%) a

We report a survival patient with hemorrhage in the quadrigeminal plate and discuss the literature of midbrain hemorrhage. A 13-year-old boy developed severe headache and vertigo on April 1st, 1983. On admission, he was comatose and tetraplegic with bilateral facial palsy and total ophthalmoplegia. CT scan revealed a hemorrhage in the midbrain and ambient cistern, but vertebral angiogram no abnormal vessels. Seven hours after admission, continuous ventricular drainage was performed. Disturbance of consciousness, ophthalmoplegia and speech disturbance were gradually improved. CT scan with contr

The HRP/trypsin technique is a new histologic method for the light microscopic study of the retinal blood vessels. A two-stage procedure, the first step results in a retinal whole amount preparation which permits visualization of the three-dimensional architecture of perfused vessels and their relationship within the retina. This allows analysis of gross vessel morphology and differentiation of deep and superficial vascular beds. The second step involves digesting the whole mount with trypsin and staining with hematoxylin. This permits detailed evaluation of the density of retinal capillary en

BACKGROUND: Anti-centromere antibodies are autoantibodies that selectively bind to the centromere region of chromosomes. Studies have indicated that anti-centromere antibodies can induce microvascular alterations and tissue remodeling, ultimately leading to fibrosis. They have been implicated in limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis, including calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysmotility, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia syndrome, and primary biliary cholangitis, where anti-centromere antibody positivity can be associated with rapid progression of portal hypertension, although the

Background Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia resulting from a defect in insulin secretion and/or action. It is a global health problem. When left uncontrolled over the long term, hyperglycemia can damage many body's organs, leading to disabling and potentially fatal complications such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), nerve damage (neuropathy), kidney damage (nephropathy), and eye damage, inducing retinopathy, visual loss, and even blindness. Understanding the biochemical parameters associated with diabetic complications is important for effective management

Due to a lack of technical capacity to directly visualise and quantify microvessels in the skin, little is known regarding regional and/or sex differences. We compared diameter, velocity, flow and density at four regional sites using a novel optical coherence tomography (OCT) approach. OCT and laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) were performed on the back, forearm, foot and thigh in 30 healthy adults (15♂ 15♀; 31 ± 6years) at rest (33°C) and after 30 min of local heating (LH; 44°C). At baseline, larger diameter, speed, flow, density and LDF flux were recorded on the back than other sites (P < 0.017)

While mast cells are known to induce differences in the matrix structures, microvascular patterns, and immune responses in a number of diseases, the possible role of mast cells in these same processes over the spectrum of leprosy has not yet been investigated. Thus, ascertaining the possible influence of mast cells in the outcome of the anti-leprosy response to Mycobacterium leprae is of major importance. In this study, 51 cutaneous biopsies of leprosy patients were stained with anti-tryptase antibody in order to quantify mast cells in leprosy lesions and compare the number and size of these c

INTRODUCTION: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) are more prevalent in the elderly. There is a lack of large animal models that allow the study of the impact of age on CKD and HFpEF in a translational fashion. This manuscript reports the first large preclinical model of CKD-HFpEF and metabolic derangements in naturally aged swine.
METHODS: CKD-HFpEF was induced in naturally aged (6-9 years old) and young (3 months old) pigs, followed for 14 weeks, and compared to normal young and old controls (n = 5/group). Renal and cardiac hemodynamics we
