High prevalence and diversity of Bartonella in small mammals from the biodiverse Western Ghats.

Bartonella species are recognized globally as emerging zoonotic pathogens. Small mammals such as rodents and shrews are implicated as major natural reservoirs for these microbial agents. Nevertheless, in several tropical countries, like India, the diversity of Bartonella in small mammals remain unexplored and limited information exists on the natural transmission cycles (reservoirs and vectors) of these bacteria. Using a multi-locus sequencing approach, we investigated the prevalence, haplotype diversity, and phylogenetic affinities of Bartonella in small mammals and their associated mites in

Skin-homing T-cell responses associated with Demodex infestation and rosacea.

AIMS: Our aim was to investigate the skin-homing T-cell immune responses triggered in patients with Demodex infestation and/or rosacea. METHODS: Collected whole blood samples were divided into four groups: control subjects; nonrosacea patients with Demodex infestation (Demodex group); papulopustular rosacea (PPR) patients without Demodex infestation (Rosacea group); and PPR patients with Demodex infestation (Rosacea/Demodex group). Following ex vivo activation, skin-homing CLA+CD4+ T-cell subset levels were monitored by flow cytometry. RESULTS: When compared with control subjects, among skin

Pneumonyssoides species infestation in two Pekingese dogs in the UK.

Two male, neutered, Pekingese dogs aged four years and 12 years were presented for acute-onset nasal pruritus and sneezing following a visit to a beach in northern Scotland. Routine nasal investigations revealed the presence of the canine nasal mite Pneumonyssoides both by direct visualisation and histopathologically. Resolution of clinical signs was observed following selamectin treatment. To the authors' knowledge, this report describes the first cases of Pneumonyssoides infestation in non-travelled UK dogs.

Susceptibility of cypress seedlings to the eriophyoid mite Trisetacus juniperinus.

In Italian nurseries and young groves of evergreen cypress (Cupressus sempervirens L.), the eriophyoid mite Trisetacus juniperinus (Nal.) is considered a very serious pest. A rating system of damage symptoms was developed to investigate the susceptibility of different cypress seedling families to the mite. Based on this system, the seedlings were evaluated for three years in the nursery and in two field locations after transplanting. Data obtained in the nursery allowed the cypress families to be allocated to at least two different levels of susceptibility. These levels of susceptibility were

[Dermatitis caused by Cheyletiella. Description of 8 cases and review of the literature].

The Authors report eight cases of Cheyletiella dermatitis, parasite mite of domestic animals but also known as pathogenic for man. This animal parasitosis mentioned many times in other countries, seems to be very diffused in Italy, too. Nevertheless, the literature tells that normally, in our country, Cheyletiella dermatitis is a pathology completely underestimated and almost unknown. The Authors, because of the aspecificity of the clinical and histopathological data, lay special stress on the differential diagnosis problems concerning this infestation.

Scabies: an epidemiologic reassessment.

Scabies is a highly contagious parasitic infestation whose exact nature is unknown. A reassessment of epidemiologic data questions accepted ideas such as that scabies is a sexually transmitted disease; 30-year cycles of scabies epidemics exist; changes in the immune status of the host population (herd immunity) are epidemiologically significant; fomite transmission is rare; and blacks are resistant to the mite. Scabies epidemics are due to several factors and improved surveillance is needed before the disease can be better controlled.

Gastrointestinal helminth infections and ectoparasitism in wild rodents along wildlife-human interfaces in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal parasites pose a significant threat to human and domestic animal health across Africa. Despite numerous studies on ectoparasitism and endoparasitism in small mammals across different regions of the continent, the ecological role of rodents in transmission dynamics of gastrointestinal helminths remains poorly understood. This study aimed to identify gastrointestinal helminths in rodents and evaluate the influence of host-related factors, ectoparasite infestations, and environmental variables on helminth prevalence at wildlife-human interfaces in Tanzania. METHODS:

Presence of Demodex spp. on the face and scalp in patients affected by papulopustular rosacea of face.

BACKGROUND: The increased proliferation of Demodex mites in the pilosebaceous unit can be the cause of rosacea flare-ups on the face. Signs and symptoms of the scalp (e.g., itching, dandruff) have sometimes been reported in patients with papulopustular rosacea of face; they may be due to a proliferation of Demodex mites on the scalp. METHODS: To study the Demodex mites count, a standardized skin surface biopsy was performed on the cheek and on the scalp. Microscopic examination and molecular identification of Demodex were performed. Pearson's χ2 Test or Fisher's Exact Test were used to test f

Successful Treatment of Demodex gatoi with 10% Imidacloprid/1% Moxidectin.

Demodex gatoi is a transmissible, short-bodied mite found in the stratum corneum of cats. It is known to cause moderate to intense pruritus, often manifested as self-induced alopecia and excoriations. 10% imidacloprid/1% moxidectin (a) is a monthly, topical solution indicated for the treatment and/or prevention of fleas, heartworms, intestinal parasites, and ear mites. A household of cats was presented for pruritus that ranged from mild to severe in 8 of the 13 felines. The most common clinical signs included miliary-type papular dermatitis and focal areas of erythema associated with alopecia.

Ocular demodicosis.

We present a case of blepharitis with symptoms lasting two years in duration and refractory to a host of prior medical treatments, including antibiotics, corticosteroids, cyclosporine, and baby shampoo. We recognized the clinical presentation as pathogomonic for demodicosis caused by the parasitic mite, demodex folliculorum, confirmed with light microscopy, and treated appropriately with tea tree oil and hygiene measures--achieving full resolution of symptoms. We highlight the presentation, treatment, and underscore demodicosis as an important, under recognized cause of blepharitis.

Pathogenic role of Demodex mites in blepharitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the key literature and our research experience regarding Demodex infestation as a potential cause of ocular inflammatory diseases with a special emphasis on Demodex blepharitis. RECENT FINDINGS: Two distinct Demodex species have been confirmed as a cause of blepharitis: Demodex folliculorum can cause anterior blepharitis associated with disorders of eyelashes, and D. brevis can cause posterior blepharitis with meibomian gland dysfunction and keratoconjunctivitis. Tea tree oil treatments with either 50% lid scrubs or 5% lid massages are effective in eradicating

Experimental study on possible transmission of the bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae to chickens by the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae.

The vector potential of the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae De Geer (Acari: Dermanyssidae), in relation to chicken erysipelas was investigated under experimental conditions. Chickens were inoculated intramuscularly with the bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, and mites were allowed to feed on the inoculated chickens for 5 days. After 20 days of starvation, the mites were allowed to feed on healthy chickens to enable transmission of bacteria. Blood samples were collected from the birds and analysed for the presence of E. rhusiopathiae, and ELISA tests were performed for seropositivit

Exposure to Psoroptes sp. mites is common among bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) populations in California.

Sera (n = 806) from 50 populations of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in California (USA) were evaluated for antibodies to Psoroptes sp. mites using a kinetic enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Test values for each sample were determined to be either positive or negative at each of two ELISA cutoff values that provided either 100% sensitivity (low cutoff) or 100% specificity (high cutoff), respectively. One hundred sixty-eight (20.8%) sera were seropositive at the low cutoff value, and 87 (10.8%) of these sera also were seropositive at the high cutoff value. Eleven populations were des

Comparison of cryofixation methods for skin biopsies from sheep infested with Psoroptes ovis (Acari: Psoroptidae).

Two methods of cryofixing skin samples from sheep infested with Psoroptes ovis were compared. In one method the skin biopsy was placed in a capped vial before immersion, while the other allowed direct contact with liquid nitrogen. No statistically significant differences were found between the cryofixation methods with regard to location of P. ovis sections or engaged mouthparts. Direct contact with liquid nitrogen is recommended as the preferred method for cryofixing epidermal feeding ectoparasites on skin samples.
