Whether you work in the acute care, continuing care or outpatient setting, you cannot afford to ignore the effects of workplace violence. The costs are significant when you consider that they affect morale, productivity, service delivery, turnover and ultimately your financial success. Remember, a violent incident doesn't end when the incident is over. People must cope with the consequence of verbal or physical abuse and continual feelings of anger, guilt and fear. We must recognize workplace violence as a major occupational health and safety hazard. Most importantly, a program that reduces or…

INTRODUCTION: Moral conflicts are common within geriatric and palliative care and can lead to moral distress. Clinical ethics support helps healthcare providers in managing moral conflicts and moral distress. CURA is a low-threshold clinical ethics support instrument. The feasibility for nurses and nurse-assistants in palliative care has already been investigated. However, the acceptability and feasibility of CURA within medical practitioners is unclear.
METHODS: Prospective cohort study, using mixed methods. Participants are medical practitioners working in geriatric or palliative care, who

Money can take many forms-a coin or a bill, a payment for an automobile or a prize for an award, a piece from the 1989 series or the 2019 series, and so on-but despite this, money is designed to represent an amount and only that. Thus, a dollar is a dollar, in the sense that money is fungible. But when adults ordinarily think about money, they think about it in terms of its source, and in particular, its moral source (e.g., dirty money). Here we investigate the development of the belief that money carries traces of its moral history. We study children ages 5-6 and 8-9, who are sensitive to bot

INTRODUCTION: Theory of Mind, i.e., the ability to attribute mental states to others, is critical for social communication but is often impaired in autism. Although narrative tasks have been extensively used to study Theory of Mind in autism, moral judgement of the story protagonists' actions has not received equal attention. The current study aimed to assess cognitive and affective Theory of Mind, as well as moral reasoning skills in autistic children through Aesop's fable comprehension.
METHODS: In this study, 25 autistic children and two equally-sized groups of typically-developing age- an

The longstanding dominance of values rooted in Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) societies has increasingly come under scrutiny across the social sciences. This has renewed interest in how value systems cultivated in less-WEIRD contexts are articulated and widely received by WEIRD audiences. Recent advances in natural language processing make it possible to examine how such values are articulated in classical texts, using psychologically grounded analytical frameworks. The present study focuses on Bushido: The Soul of Japan, a widely read classic written by Inazo

BACKGROUND: Speech-language therapists and audiologists (SLT&As) may encounter difficulties when confronted with patient death and dying, which may conflict with their moral beliefs and result in moral injury. Furthermore, South African SLT&As practice in a country with a high mortality rate, which may add to the complexity of their experience. Moreover, they may be influenced by African philosophies promoting care, which might conflict with their experiences of patient death and dying.
AIMS: To explore the moral injury experienced by South African SLT&As in patient death and dying, and how t

Proponents of human fetal tissue research argue that this endeavor is morally separate from abortion. They claim that one's views about the morality of abortion should not effect decisions about the ethics of fetal tissue research and transplantation efforts. In lifting the ban on federal funding for fetal tissue research, President Clinton embraced this logic. However, a careful review of (1) the impact fetal tissue research and transplantation will have on the rate of abortion; (2) the concept of informed consent, and (3) the question of complicity demonstrates that abortion and fetal tissue

This study explores the relationships between nursing burnout, work engagement, and authentic leadership in Italy. It was a cross-sectional study in which the participants completed an online survey comprising three instruments. We found a significant and negative correlation between Personal Accomplishment (PA) and the Internalized Moral Perspective (r = -.108, p = .022) and Vigor (r = -.095, p = .043). Significant differences were assessed in PA levels according to the Internalized Moral Perspective (F = 5.261, p = .022), and lower PA levels also had lower mean scores in Internalized Moral P

The decriminalization of surgical and medical abortion in many Australian jurisdictions has led to discussions about the systemic and moral barriers to accessing abortion services. This article reflects on Conscientious Objection (CO), as one of such barriers in abortion services in Australia. Two broad positions are identified in the moral disagreement between a patient's legal right to abortion and a doctor's right to conscientiously object to providing such service: (1) pro-conscientious protection and (2) anti-conscientious protection. While each of these positions motivates different cour

Caring forms the philosophical and moral foundation of nursing, yet nursing education often reproduces the epistemic exclusion it professes to resist. Writing as a nursing educator and disability justice advocate, I employ philosophical hermeneutics and critical analysis to interpret nursing education through the intersecting frameworks of Noddings' ethics of care, critical disability theory, and Fricker's account of epistemic injustice. I argue that the faculty-student relationship functions as a moral microcosm in which nursing's ethical identity is either enacted or fractured, and that for

This paper critically engages with how life not worth living (LNWL) and cognate concepts are used in the field of beginning-of-life bioethics as the basis of arguments for morally requiring the application of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and/or germline genome editing (GGE). It is argued that an objective conceptualization of LNWL is largely too unreliable in beginning-of-life cases for deriving decisive normative reasons that would constitute a moral duty on the part of intending parents. Subjective frameworks are found to be more suitable to determine LNWL, but they are not access

Much of the psychiatric literature about prisoners concerns the associations between psychiatric conditions and criminality. More recently, there has been increased psychiatric interest in the moral emotions (i.e., emotions related to the rightness or wrongness of an individual's actions) and their association with psychological problems and psychopathology. The role of moral emotions has never previously been studied in relation to prison adaptation on initial incarceration. Their impact in adaptation to prison life was studied longitudinally. Immediately after prison incarceration, 316 adult

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly disrupted global tourism, yet the cognitive mechanisms underlying tourists' behavioral responses during health crises remain insufficiently understood. Drawing on an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework, this study investigates how epidemic perception, non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), and moral norms shape tourists' decision-making processes. Survey data were collected from 360 respondents with pre-existing travel plans in China during the early pandemic phase. Structural equation modeling (Amos and Smart-PLS) reveals that epidemic pe

Although developmental theories have long conceptualized fairness in resource distribution contexts as a component of morality, this view has been challenged recently. Based on findings from two studies, Yucel et al. (2022) concluded that children-and perhaps adults-do not perceive fairness as a moral norm. Using social domain theory as a framework, this article considers (mis)conceptions in Yucel et al.'s definitions and measurement of morality and empirically reevaluates their claims regarding children's and adults' perceptions of fairness. Study 1 used an online survey to examine university

Corruption behavior has gained worldwide concern for its great harmfulness to public society. In order to reduce corruption, researchers have carried out numerous studies on corrupt prevention. Researchers found that except for external supervision, the internal factor such as moral judgment also have an impact on corruption behavior. Previous brain imaging and stimulation studies suggested that dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is critical brain area which integrates emotional and cognitive process of moral judgments. Therefore, in the current study, we applied tDCS (transcranial direct

This article explicates two approaches to the basis of moral worth and status: Eva Kittay's relational view and Jeff McMahan's psychological personhood view. It is argued that these theories alone do not provide adequate support for the conclusions Kittay and McMahan want to draw concerning individuals whose entitlement to fundamental protections can be challenged-infants with severe cognitive disabilities and infants without the support of their families and social environments. The real justification can in each case be found in deeply held convictions regarding entities that must and entiti

There are significant challenges in identifying and diagnosing problematic pornography use (PPU), as pornography-related difficulties can stem from behavioral dysregulation and/or moral convictions regarding pornography use. Previous research has shown that personal and/or moral values, notably religiosity, play an important role in shaping pornography-related experiences and outcomes, though broader spirituality remains unexplored. The aims of this study were to (1) provide a comprehensive overview of PPU by exploring its behavioral, psychological, and moral characteristics, and (2) test spir

Preschool children's reasoning regarding moral events differs according to adversity and relates to aggression. Understanding morality in young children is paramount for understanding their aggressive behaviors. The study aims to identify patterns of aggression and prosocial behavior using Latent Class Analysis (LCA) and investigate how patterns of aggression and prosocial behavior relate to reasoning about prototypic moral events. One hundred six children (Mage = 4.40 years old, SD = 0.55 years old, Range: 3.08-5.33 years old, 51% boys) enrolled in Head Start programs and their caregivers pa

Particularism-bending rules to help one's friends and relations-is a morally ambiguous form of corruption that, unlike bribery, might be justified by virtues of loyalty and care. To test whether they involve distinct moral vulnerabilities, we developed a 16-item Particularism vs. Bribery Tolerance Scale (PBTS) using lay input from Chinese populations, Rasch modeling, and Bayesian structural equation modeling (BSEM). Two pilot studies (N = 91; N = 114) in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland generated topic-matched scenarios of either particularism or bribery. In Study 1 (N = 499), eight pairs of

This Cultural Case Study examines how self-harm becomes meaningful within particular South Asian moral worlds, drawing on intergenerational family oral histories and autoethnographic reflection spanning Kashmir, Andhra Pradesh, Tehran, and the United States diaspora. Read alongside South Asian ethnographic and clinical scholarship, these narratives show that bodily self-injury can function as a form of situated agency and relational communication when verbal self-assertion is constrained. Building on prior work that interprets suicide and self-harm as gendered forms of communication in South A
