Motion sickness, console video games, and head-mounted displays.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the nauseogenic properties of commercial console video games (i.e., games that are sold to the public) when presented through a head-mounted display. BACKGROUND: Anecdotal reports suggest that motion sickness may occur among players of contemporary commercial console video games. METHODS: Participants played standard console video games using an Xbox game system. We varied the participants' posture (standing vs. sitting) and the game (two Xbox games). Participants played for up to 50 min and were asked to discontinue if they experienced any symptoms of motion sickness…

Narcolepsy and the hypocretin system--where motion meets emotion.

Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder that is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy--a loss of muscle tone generally triggered by certain strong emotions with sudden onset. The underlying cause of most cases of human narcolepsy is a loss of neurons that produce hypocretin (Hcrt, also known as orexin). These cells normally serve to drive and synchronize the activity of monoaminergic and cholinergic cells. Sleepiness results from the reduced activity of monoaminergic, cholinergic and other cells that are normally activated by Hcrt neurons, as well as from the loss of Hcrt i…

Motion perception deficits in albino ferrets (Mustela putorius furo).

Albino ferrets contrary to their pigmented conspecifics show no optokinetic nystagmus. Therefore, in this study motion perception was compared between pigmented and albino ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) trained to discriminate between coherently moving random dot patterns and dynamic noise stimuli in a two-alternative forced choice task. Fully coherently versus incoherently moving patterns could be distinguished by ferrets of both phenotypes. Motion coherence thresholds, however, were significantly higher in albinos. These results indicate that albino ferrets are not motion blind as could be …

Motion sickness, body movement, and claustrophobia during passive restraint.

Standing participants were passively restrained and exposed to oscillating visual motion. Thirty-nine percent of participants reported motion sickness. Despite passive restraint, participants exhibited displacements of the center of pressure, and prior to the onset of motion sickness the evolution of these displacements differed between participants who later became sick and those who did not. Claustrophobia occurred during restraint, but only among participants who became motion sick. The results are consistent with the postural instability theory of motion sickness. We discuss the possible r…

Effect on knee motion of gradual intramedullary femoral lengthening.

Gradual femoral lengthening causes loss of knee motion due to soft tissue tightness. Lengthening with an intramedullary device would be expected to retain good knee movements since it avoids soft tissue transfixation. To ascertain this we looked at the knee movements recorded in 27 patients before, during and after bilateral simultaneous femoral lengthening using Albizzia nails. The mean gain was 6.2 cm and the mean follow-up 28.6 months. No significant difference was noted between the mean preoperative and final knee flexions (148.3 degrees vs. 148.4 degrees) and the mean preoperative and fin…

Implied motion from form in the human visual cortex.

When cartoonists use speed lines--also called motion streaks--to suggest the speed of a stationary object, they use form to imply motion. The goal of this study was to investigate the mechanisms that mediate the percept of implied motion in the human visual cortex. In an adaptation functional imaging paradigm we presented Glass patterns that, just like speed lines, imply motion but do not on average contain coherent motion energy. We found selective adaptation to these patterns in the human motion complex, the lateral occipital complex (LOC), and earlier visual areas. Glass patterns contain bo…

Immediate range of motion after distal biceps tendon repair.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of immediate postoperative motion on strength and elbow motion after repair of a distal biceps tendon rupture. We conducted a retrospective review of 13 patients who had repairs of a unilateral distal biceps tendon rupture with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. The repairs were performed via a 2-incision technique. The elbows were placed into hinged braces immediately postoperatively, and range of motion was limited to 60 degrees of flexion to full limitation on flexion on the first postoperative day. Elbow extension block was decreased to 40…

Motion-sickness medications for aircrew: impact on psychomotor performance.

INTRODUCTION: Motion sickness remains a significant problem for aircrew both in the flying environment (airsickness) and for aircrew deployed at sea (seasickness). While some anti-motion-sickness medications provide reasonable efficacy, adverse neurocognitive effects limit their use in military personnel engaged in safety-sensitive operational roles such as flying. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact on psychomotor performance of promethazine, meclizine, and dimenhydrinate and to determine if the addition of pseudoephedrine or damphetamine to promethazine would ameliorate its ad…

Stress distribution in the superior labrum during throwing motion.

BACKGROUND: Superior labrum anterior posterior lesions are common among athletes participating in overhead throwing sports. One described mechanism of injury is application of high local stress via repetitive loading of the long head of the biceps tendon attached to the superior labrum; however, the stress environment within the labrum has not been investigated to date. HYPOTHESIS: Biceps origin locations and throwing phases determine the stress distributions causing lesions of the superior labrum within the labrum itself. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: Three-dimension

Human MT+ mediates perceptual filling-in during apparent motion.

During apparent motion, spatially distinct items presented in alternation cause the perception of a visual stimulus smoothly traversing the intervening space where no physical stimulus exists. We used fMRI to determine whether the perceptual 'filling-in' that underlies this phenomenon has an early or late cortical locus. Subjects viewed a display comprised of concentric rings that elicited apparent motion (two concentric rings presented in alternation), flicker (the same rings presented simultaneously), or real motion. We independently localized the cortical regions corresponding to the path o…

Noninvasive ultrasonic measurement of arterial wall motion in mice.

Despite the extensive use of genetically altered mice to study cardiovascular physiology and pathology, it remains difficult to quantify arterial function noninvasively in vivo. We have developed a noninvasive Doppler method for quantifying vessel wall motion in anesthetized mice. A 20-MHz probe was held by an alligator clip and positioned over the carotid arteries of 16 mice, including six 3- to 5-mo-old wild-type (WT), four 30-mo-old senescent (old), two apolipoprotein E null (ApoE), and four alpha-smooth muscle actin null (alpha-SMA) mice. Doppler signals were obtained simultaneously from b…

Cortical specialization for processing first- and second-order motion.

Distinct mechanisms underlying the visual perception of luminance- (first-order) and contrast-defined (second-order) motion have been proposed from electrophysiological, human psychophysical and neurological studies; however a cortical specialization for these mechanisms has proven elusive. Here human brain imaging combined with psychophysical methods was used to assess cortical specializations for processing these two kinds of motion. A common stimulus construction was employed, controlling for differences in spatial and temporal properties, psychophysical performance and attention. Distinct …

Early active motion flexor tendon protocol using one splint.

This article describes an early active motion protocol for use after a four-strand flexor tendon repair. The protocol uses a simple dorsal blocking splint with the wrist in neutral and four fingers in rubber band traction for the first five weeks, then gradually advances the patient over the next seven weeks. The patient is able to perform the exercises without changing the splint at home during the first five weeks of the protocol. The results of the retrospective chart review are promising. Of 40 digits, 95% experienced excellent and good results in zone II, and 87.5% experienced excellent a…

Head-centred motion perception in the ageing visual system.

Stationary objects appear to move in the opposite direction to a pursuit eye movement (Filehne illusion) and moving objects appear slower when pursued (Aubert-Fleischl phenomenon). Both illusions imply that extra-retinal, eye-velocity signals lead to lower estimates of speed than corresponding retinal motion signals. Intriguingly, the velocity (i.e. speed and direction) of the Filehne illusion depends on the age of the observer, especially for brief display durations (Wertheim and Bekkering, 1992). This suggests relative signal size changes as the visual system matures. To test the signal-size…

Optokinetic stimuli: motion sickness, visual acuity, and eye movements.

BACKGROUND: It is commonly assumed that motion sickness caused by moving visual scenes arises from the illusion of self-motion (i.e., vection). HYPOTHESES: Both studies reported here investigated whether sickness and vection were correlated. The first study compared sickness and vection created by real and virtual visual displays. The second study investigated whether visual fixation to suppress eye movements affected motion sickness or vection. METHOD: In the first experiment subjects viewed an optokinetic drum and a virtual simulation of the optokinetic drum. The second experiment investig…

Motion-specific laryngeal reinnervation using muscle-nerve-muscle neurotization.

There is no current treatment method that can reliably restore physiologic movement to a paralyzed vocal fold. The purposes of this study we … aryngeal muscle could be reinnervated by axons from its contralateral paired muscle, thus achieving motion-specific reinnervation. Eighteen adult cats were divided into sham, hemilaryngeal-denervated, and M-N-M-reinnervated thyroarytenoid muscle groups. Five of the 6 reinnervated animals had histologic evidence of axons in the nerve graft, 4 of the 6 had …

Eye movements affect the perceived speed of visual motion.

Eye movements add a constant displacement to the visual scene, altering the retinal-image velocity. Therefore, in order to recover the real world motion, eye-movement effects must be compensated. If full compensation occurs, the perceived speed of a moving object should be the same regardless of whether the eye is stationary or moving. Using a pursue-fixate procedure in a perceptual matching paradigm, we found that eye movements systematically bias the perceived speed of the distal stimulus, indicating a lack of compensation. Speed judgments depended on the interaction between the distal stimu…
