Activation of forearm muscles for wrist extension in patients affected by lateral epicondylitis.

Work related upper extremity disorders are associated with cumulative trauma resulting from the continuous use of forearm muscles rather than from a specific incident. The aim of this work is to compare wrist extensor muscles activation between patients with lateral epicondylitis and healthy subjects. Differences can be used in the design of rehabilitation or injury prevention programs according to biomechanical deficits. Surface EMG signals from three forearm extensor muscles (Carpi Radialis-ECR, Digitorum Communis-EDC and Carpi Ulnaris-ECU) were recorded by linear electrode arrays in wrist e

The Activity of Surface Electromyographic Signal of Selected Muscles during Classic Rehabilitation Exercise.

Objectives. Prone bridge, unilateral bridge, supine bridge, and bird-dog are classic rehabilitation exercises, which have been advocated as … rehabilitation exercises were observed. The prone bridge and unilateral bridge caused the greatest muscle fatigue; however, the supine bridge generated the lowest muscle activity. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between left and right body side muscles in the median frequency slope during the four rehabilitation exercises of seven muscles. Conclu …

Inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system improves physiological outcomes in mice with mild or severe cancer cachexia.

Cancer cachexia describes the progressive skeletal muscle wasting and weakness associated with many cancers. Cachexia reduces mobility and quality of life and accounts for 20-30% of all cancer-related deaths. Activation of the renin-angiotensin system causes skeletal muscle wasting and weakness. We tested the hypothesis that treatment with the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, perindopril, would enhance whole body and skeletal muscle function in cachectic mice bearing Colon-26 (C-26) tumors. CD2F1 mice received a subcutaneous injection of phosphate buffered saline or C-26 tumor ce

Clinical evaluation of muscle functions in neurofibromatosis type 1.

AIM: Muscle weakness, fatigue and speech problems can occur in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). The pathogenesis of these symptoms is unclear, likely multifactorial. We examined motor function in limb and speech muscles in NF1 patients. METHODS: We evaluated NF1 and control groups aged 4-18 years for muscle strength, tone and mobility using standard manual testing, joint motion and Beighton score measurements. Speech and language functions were assessed by speech articulation and resonance. As a marker of muscle tissue turnover, we determined collagen degradation products in urine before and a

The excitation-contraction coupling mechanism was defined as the entire sequence of reactions linking excitation of plasma membrane to activ … on has begun. The excitation-contraction coupling is thought to be altered in situations as ageing, muscle fatigue and some muscle diseases. However, many questions remain to be answered. For example, (1) How excitation-contraction coupling develops and ages? (2) What role does it play in muscle fatigue and other diseases? (3) What is the nature of the interacti …

A Novel Striated Muscle-Specific Myosin-Blocking Drug for the Study of Neuromuscular Physiology.

The failure to transmit neural action potentials (APs) into muscle APs is referred to as neuromuscular transmission failure (NTF). Although synaptic dysfunction occurs in a variety of neuromuscular diseases and impaired neurotransmission contributes to muscle fatigue, direct evaluation of neurotransmission by measurement of successfully transduced muscle APs is difficult due to the subsequent movements produced by muscle. Moreover, the voltage-gated sodium channel inhibitor used to study neurotransmitter release at the adult neuromuscular junction is ineffective in embryonic tissue, making it …

Slow VO₂ kinetics during moderate-intensity exercise as markers of lower metabolic stability and lower exercise tolerance.

An analysis of previously published data obtained by our group on patients characterized by markedly slower pulmonary VO₂ kinetics (heart transplant recipients, patients with mitochondrial myopathies, patients with McArdle disease) was carried out in order to suggest that slow VO₂ kinetics should not be considered the direct cause, but rather a marker, of impaired exercise tolerance. For a given ATP turnover rate, faster (or slower) VO₂ kinetics are associated with smaller (or greater) muscle [PCr] decreases. The latter, however, should not be taken per se responsible for the higher (or lower)

The Application of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Training in Various Non-neurologic Patient Populations: A Narrative Review.

In the last 2 decades, neuromuscular electrical stimulation has been used increasingly in deconditioned patients with the aim of increasing muscle force. Much basic research has been conducted in the area of increasing a muscle's fatigue resistance by neuromuscular electrical stimulation but similarly thorough research with regard to increasing maximal force is missing. Insufficient clinical and basic knowledge exists on the selection of stimulation parameters that will optimize muscle hypertrophy and gains in muscle force. For volitional training, established stimuli for muscle hypertrophy (w

The utility of interference pattern analysis.

The interference pattern of the electrical activity of muscle can be quantified by amplitude measurements, different spike counting methods, and power spectrum analyses. Interference pattern analysis (IPA) methods are used to describe the degree of activation of different muscles, muscle fatigue, occupational work, muscles in chronic pain syndromes, disused muscle, and dystonic muscle treated with botulinum toxin. In patients with neuromuscular disorders, the turns/amplitude analysis is useful for diagnosis. High diagnostic yields can be obtained without force measurements, for example, by usi…

Power Output Manipulation from Below to Above the Gas Exchange Threshold Results in Exacerbated Performance Fatigability.

INTRODUCTION: Performance fatigability is substantially greater when exercising in the severe- versus heavy-intensity domain. However, the relevance of the boundary between moderate- and heavy-intensity exercise, the gas exchange threshold (GET), to performance fatigability is unclear. This study compared alterations in neuromuscular function during work-matched exercise above and below the GET. METHODS: Seventeen male participants completed work-matched cycling for 90, 110, and 140 min at 110%, 90%, and 70% of the GET, respectively. Knee extensor isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)

[A case of myokymia-hyperhidrosis syndrome with muscle involvement].

The present report deals with an unique case of myokymia-hyperhidrosis syndrome. A 46-year-old man developed generalized relatively slow, undulating movement of the muscles, excessive sweating, muscle cramps and easy fatigability since three years ago. On admission, he had generalized myokymia, abnormal movements consisting of slow, undulating and worm-like muscular contractions. There was no muscle atrophy or weakness, or sensory deficits. Deep tendon reflexes were diminished and no Babinski sign or other pathological reflexes were present. Muscle tone was in normal range. Neither fasciculati

Chronic fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome: shifting boundaries and attributions.

The subjective symptom of "fatigue" is one of the most widespread in the general population and is a major source of healthcare utilization. Prolonged fatigue is often associated with neuropsychological and musculoskeletal symptoms that form the basis of several syndromal diagnoses including chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and neurasthenia, and is clearly not simply the result of a lack of force generation from the muscle. Current epidemiologic research in this area relies predominantly on self-report data to document the prevalence and associations of chronic fatigue. Of necessity, th

Exercise-Associated Muscle Cramp-Doubts About the Cause.

INTRODUCTION: Exercise-associated muscle cramp (EAMC) is one of the most common conditions that occur during or immediately after the exercise, with questionable etiology. AIM: Aim of article was to present doubts about the cause of EAMC, whether it is primarily a neurological condition or it is water and salt imbalance. RESULTS: Strongest evidence supports the neuromuscular aetiology with the focus on the muscle fatigue. Muscle overload and fatigue affects the balance between the excitatory drive from muscle spindles and the inhibitory drive from the Golgi tendon organs (GTO). This results …

Physical fatigability and muscle pain in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis.

INTRODUCTION: Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) may lead to muscle weakness due to hypothyroid dysfunction. However, clinical experience treating patients with HT suggests that neuromuscular symptoms may develop in these patients despite long-standing euthyroidism. METHODS: In 24 euthyroid patients with HT and 25 healthy controls, physical fatigability was assessed using the arm movement test (AMT) and 6-min walk test (6MWT). Fatigability was based on calculation of linear trend (LT) reflecting dynamic performance within subsequent constant time intervals. Perception of physical fatigue and muscle p

Power loss is attenuated following a second bout of high-intensity eccentric contractions due to the repeated bout effect's protection of rate of torque and velocity development.

High-intensity unaccustomed eccentric contractions result in weakness and power loss because of fatigue and muscle damage. Through the repeated bout effect (RBE), adaptations occur, then damage and weakness are attenuated following a subsequent bout. However, it is unclear whether the RBE protects peak power output. We investigated the influence of the RBE on power production and estimated fatigue- and damage-induced neuromuscular impairments following repeated high-intensity eccentric contractions. Twelve healthy adult males performed 5 sets of 30 maximal eccentric elbow flexions and repeated
