A single session of EMS training induces long-lasting changes in circulating muscle but not cardiovascular miRNA levels: a randomized crossover study.

Electromyostimulation (EMS) is used to maintain or build skeletal muscle and to increase cardiopulmonary fitness. Only limited data on the molecular mechanisms induced by EMS are available and effects on circulating microRNAs (c-miRNAs) have not been reported. This study aimed to evaluate whether EMS induces long-term changes in muscle- and cardiovascular-specific c-miRNA levels. Twelve healthy participants (33.0 ± 12.0 yr, 7 women) performed a 20-min whole body EMS training and a time- and intensity-matched whole body circuit training (CT) in random order. Blood samples were drawn pre-/posttr

Investigating interindividual variability in corticomotor reorganization during sustained hamstring pain: A randomized experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests that pain drives maladaptive corticomotor changes that may increase susceptibility to injury and promote symptom recurrence. However, few studies have evaluated the influence of interindividual corticomotor responses to musculoskeletal pain. Existing research in this area has also been limited largely to the upper limb. This is a pertinent point, given the functional and neurophysiological differences between upper and lower limb muscles, as well as the fact that most acute sporting injuries occur in the lower limb. Accordingly, this study explored the

Evaluation of a preemptive intervention regimen with hesperidin methyl chalcone in delayed-onset muscle soreness in young adults: a randomized, double-blinded, and placebo-controlled trial study.

PURPOSE: Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) describes an entity characterized by ultrastructural muscle damage. Hesperidin methyl chalcone (HMC) is a synthetic flavonoid presenting analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. We evaluated the effects of HMC upon DOMS. METHOD: In a preventive paradigm, 31 sedentary young men were submitted to a randomized, double-blinded parallel trial and received HMC 500 mg or one placebo capsule × 3 days before an intense dynamic exercise protocol (concentric/eccentric actions) applied for lower limbs for inducing muscle damage. Assessments w

The acute and repeated bout effects of multi-joint eccentric exercise on physical function and balance in older adults.

PURPOSE: Eccentric muscle actions generate high levels of force at a low metabolic cost, making them a suitable training modality to combat age-related neuromuscular decline. The temporary muscle soreness associated with high intensity eccentric contractions may explain their limited use in clinical exercise prescription, however any discomfort is often alleviated after the initial bout (repeated bout effect). Therefore, the aims of the present study were to examine the acute and repeated bout effects of eccentric contractions on neuromuscular factors associated with the risk of falling in old

Sensory, functional and electromyographic variables show different recovery patterns over a seven day period following exercise-induced pain in the hamstrings.

BACKGROUND: Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is common after unaccustomed exercises and can restrict performance if intense physical activities are performed while the muscle is still sore. This study aimed to evaluate the recovery process following exercise-induced DOMS over a seven-day period by evaluating sensory, functional, and electromyographic parameters. METHODS: Twenty-four healthy males participated in four experimental sessions (Day-0, Day-2, Day-4, Day-7). Pain perception, pressure pain sensitivity, active range of motion, maximal isometric strength, and muscle activity of the

Therapeutic Approaches to Nociplastic Pain Based on Findings in the Reserpine-Induced Fibromyalgia-Like Animal Model.

Nociplastic pain, the third category of chronic pain, has emerged as a serious medical issue. Due to its significant negative influences on patients and society, high prevalence, and lack of sufficiently effective treatments, more efficacious therapies are required. This review highlights the potential therapeutic approaches identified in studies that used reserpine-induced myalgia (RIM) animal model that exhibits nociplastic pain-associated phenotypes. These studies have revealed that biologic processes including the chronic reduction of monoamines, increase of oxidative/nitrosative stresses …

Oral Branched-Chain Amino Acids Supplementation in Athletes: A Systematic Review.

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are oxidized in the muscle and result in stimulating anabolic signals-which in return may optimize performance, body composition and recovery. Meanwhile, among athletes, the evidence about BCAA supplementation is not clear. The aim of this study was to review the effects of BCAAs in athletic populations. The research was conducted in three databases: Web of Science (all databases), PubMed and Scopus. The inclusion criteria involved participants classified both as athletes and people who train regularly, and who were orally supplemented with BCAAs. The risk of
