[Sacred psychoactive seeds and ritual sacrifices in the Moche culture].

INTRODUCTION: Archaeological findings have confirmed the existence of representations of ritual human sacrifices on pottery belonging to the Moche culture (100-750 AD) in northern Peru; until recently these images were thought to be mythological narrations. We review the archaeological and ethno-historical data concerning Moche sacrifices and we attempt to identify the psychoactive seeds and plants used during such rites. DEVELOPMENT: Ethno-historical data from different chronicles of the New World written in the 16th century state that hamala seeds (belonging to the species Nectandra) were u…

Lesbians surviving childhood sexual abuse.

Abstract This qualitative, feminist study is focused on lesbians' experiences growing up in multiproblem families, surviving aftereffects of trauma, and struggling with alcohol problems. A multi-racial sample of 20 lesbians narrated life stories in a series of three in-depth interviews. The research report opens with one woman's narrative about surviving childhood sexual abuse and continues with explication of how differences and similarities within and between accounts pivot on the issues of sexual orientation, gender, and race. Results suggest that early in their lives, overwhelming violence

AI-Enhanced Automatic Life Story Structuring for Reminiscence Therapy in Older Adults: Technical Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Storytelling interventions have demonstrated substantial potential in improving emotional well-being, cognitive function, and quality of life for older adults. However, its effectiveness is often limited by the challenges of processing disorganized and redundant life stories, which impose substantial cognitive demands on caregivers. Although storytelling interventions are a well-established therapeutic approach, current practices depend heavily on manual narrative organization, restricting both the scalability and consistency of treatment delivery. Prior research has primarily focu

Writing neglect, rewriting self: Handwritten diaries with adults who lived youth addiction.

BACKGROUND: Youth addiction often unfolds within landscapes of neglect, yet adult accounts of these histories are commonly gathered through one-off interviews or clinical assessments. This study examined how adults in stable recovery narrate adolescent alcohol and other drug use and associated neglect through handwritten diary-style writing, and what such writing contributes methodologically to qualitative inquiry across time. METHODS: This paper reports a secondary analysis of community-generated qualitative materials produced through the SIDINL peer-support and mental health recovery networ

'Tell me your story' a qualitative analysis of written narratives from individuals affected by sibling sexual abuse and behaviour: The perspective of parents.

BACKGROUND: Sibling sexual behaviour and abuse (SSB/A) is common and has adverse effects not only to the child who is harmed and the child responsible, but the whole family unit is deeply impacted. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to understand how SSB/A is experienced by parents and what impact SSB/A has on parents. METHOD: A secondary qualitative design was used to examine 22 narrative stories written by parents (primarily mothers) about their experience of SSB/A that were submitted to #SiblingsToo, a Canadian organisation dedicated to raising awareness of SSB/A. Thematic analysis was used to an

Narrative pedagogies in cranial nerve anatomy: Comparing mythological and sports-based approaches with traditional teaching.

This study used a mixed methods randomized controlled experimental design to evaluate the effectiveness of narrative-based versus traditional pedagogy in teaching cranial nerve anatomy to medicine students. Eighty-eight students who had completed a previous course on the nervous system were randomized into three groups: a control group receiving standard theoretical and practical anatomy instruction, a group using a mythological narrative ("Supper of Gods"), and a group using an animated sports-themed narrative ("Head Coach Hypoglossus"). Knowledge acquisition was assessed using pre- and post-

Medical invalidation and life validation in individuals with Crohn's disease in Japan: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined how medical invalidation and "life validation" are enacted in the narratives of individuals living with Crohn's disease in Japan, and how these processes shape care trajectories and life possibilities. METHODS: We analyzed narrative interviews from DIPEx-Japan involving all 35 adults with Crohn's disease (43% women aged 24-59 years) in the Crohn's disease module who participated in semi-structured interviews on symptom onset, diagnosis, treatment, and everyday life. Verbatim transcripts were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis within a critical realist or

'I had to change my way of thinking, change my emotions, and learn how to react': A narrative study on the management of narcolepsy symptoms and coping with the disease from patients' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness. In NT1, cataplexy is a key symptom, involving sudden loss of muscle tone, typically triggered by strong emotions. Additional features may include sleep paralysis, hallucinations, fragmented nocturnal sleep, and vivid dreams. Symptom management is considered most effective when pharmacological (medication) and non-pharmacological (behavioural) approaches are combined. Patients' coping strategies for living with a chronic condition may influence symptom management. This study aimed to describ

Where is communication breaking down? Narrative tensions in obesity-in-pregnancy clinical encounters.

There are numerous biomedical and psychosocial challenges associated with obesity in pregnancy that impede communication between healthcare providers (HCPs) and patients. We conducted a narrative study informed by stigma theory to understand specific areas of communication breakdown in obesity-in-pregnancy clinical encounters. Sixteen patients and 19 HCPs participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews. We explored how participants positioned obesity-in-pregnancy clinical encounters within their broader narratives. Employing narrative analysis, we identified five narrative tensions contri

Using drugs to enhance capacities for action in everyday life practices: Analysing addiction stories' descriptions of the escalation of substance use as counter-narratives.

BACKGROUND: The article demonstrates how substance use can enhance capacities for action in various everyday practices and function as a productive force rather than simply a risky and harmful activity. METHODS: The data set comprises 33 life story interviews in which the participants self-identified as having experienced an addiction to substances. The data was analyzed as 'counter-narratives' by drawing on actor-network theory. RESULTS: The analysis identified four typical variants of how substance use can increase capacities for action. First, substance use can initially enhance the capac

Lurking in the shadows: time as an actor in the narratives of pregnancy within graduate medical education.

Previous studies suggest that time factors heavily into trainees' decision-making around issues of pregnancy within graduate medical education (GME). Trainees are often dissatisfied with parental leave policies and tension exists as they navigate training interruptions. However, our understanding is limited because prior studies have conceptualized only two main actors involved in this negotiation, program directors (PDs) and trainees. This study aimed to understand the role of a third ever present character that has been overlooked - Time. We recruited 13 pairs of residents/fellows who had be

The Billie project: A story completion study of young people's views on citizenship for persons in mental health recovery.

This study explores young people's perceptions of citizenship and recovery for individuals with severe mental health challenges using the story completion method. In this qualitative approach, participants were invited to complete an open-ended story stem about a fictional character, Billie, whose journey of recovery unfolds through their narratives. We analyzed 47 stories, with lengths ranging from 65 to 598 words (M = 253 words), applying both horizontal (thematic) and vertical (narrative progression) analyses. The findings reveal that participants often framed Billie's recovery in terms of

Older Gay Men's Sexual Experiences as Boys with Men: An Empirical and Narrative Analysis.

A dominant view among researchers is that boys' sexual interactions with adult men are traumatizing. In contrast, many gay men recall childhood sexual experiences with adult males as positive. The current study tested for both of these outcomes by examining recalled boyhood sexual experiences of older gay men. Interviews were conducted in the 1970-1980s, and thus, before the public view became popular that child-adult sexual interactions must be traumatizing. Quantitative analyses suggested that gay men with boyhood sexual experiences with adult males (n = 7, mostly aged 11-16 at first experie

"I can't have it; I am a man. A young man!" - men, fibromyalgia and masculinity in a Nordic context.

Purpose: Research shows that gender has a substantial impact on the health behaviour such as expression of physical symptoms like persistent pains and aches. However, there is yet little knowledge about the gendered aspect of pain by men who suffer from typical female diseases like fibromyalgia. The purpose of the study was to elucidate the interplay between illness and gender by exploring life-stories of men who suffer from fibromyalgia. Methods: The data were collected through life-story interviews of eight men suffering from fibromyalgia. A narrative methodology for analysis was applied to
