Pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor invading the gastroesophageal junction.

Pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are rare neoplasms of intermediate malignant potential. Most patients are asymptomatic and present with incidental findings on imaging. Dysphagia due to direct invasion into the esophagus is an extremely rare presentation of this uncommon tumor. The diagnosis is difficult to make preoperatively. Complete surgical resection offers the best chance of cure. We describe a 27-year-old man who presented with progressive dysphagia and the diagnosis was only revealed after en bloc resection of the esophagus, cardia, and left lower lobe.

High-resolution computed tomography: Part 5. Evaluation of the temporomandibular joint.

High-resolution computed tomography (CT) is evolving as the most valuable radiographic study when detailed information about the status of the temporomandibular joint is needed. High-resolution CT is faster, less invasive, and in most cases much more accurate than other imaging modalities used in the past. Erosive, hypertrophic, and ankylosing arthropathies are illustrated, as are condylar dislocations secondary to acute trauma, chronic trauma, and neoplasm. A detailed discussion of the common problem of the anterior displaced meniscus is undertaken.

Computed tomographic evaluation of the retroperitoneum in infants and children.

With many retroperitoneal diseases in infancy and childhood, computed tomography will give information unavailable by any other single imaging technique. This maxim applies particularly to the adrenal, where the percolating nature of neuroblastoma with its propensity toward spinal involvement is exquisitely shown with computed tomography. Renal neoplasms and trauma can be illustrated effectively with computed tomography, as can pancreatic disease and spinal and paraspinal inflammatory and neoplastic disease. In addition to diagnostic studies, computed tomography may be used as guidance for inv

Cryosurgical treatment of cancerous and noncancerous diseases of dogs, horses, and cats.

Cryosurgery was used to treat a variety of cancerous and noncancerous diseases in dogs, horses, and cats. Follow-up evaluation on 52 animals revealed an overall "no recurrence" rate of 61%. Among the animals with no recurrence were 12 of 17 with cutaneous lesions and 5 of 8 (horses) with sarcoids. Seven of 10 dogs with anal fistulas healed after cryosurgery, but 2 had recurrence of the disease. Treatment of invasive neoplasms of the oral and nasal cavities was not successful. Side effects and complications were minimal.

Aggressive mediastinal amyloidosis mimicking malignancy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Amyloidosis is characterized by extracellular protein fibril deposition. Light-chain (AL) amyloidosis may be associated with plasma cell dyscrasias. Isolated mediastinal involvement is exceptionally rare and may mimic malignant tumors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old woman presented with a progressively enlarging anterior chest wall mass caused by an invasive mediastinal lesion. Biopsy revealed amyloid deposition. She underwent bilateral thoracotomy, sternectomy, en-bloc chest wall resection, and reconstruction. Final pathology confirmed AL amyloidosis associated with a kappa-r

A EWSR1-CREM-rearranged gastric mesenchymal tumor accompanied by gastritis cystica profunda and with probable benign behavior: a case report.

Genomic rearrangements involving EWSR1 and the CREB family of transcription factors are increasingly detected in an array of mesenchymal neoplasms, most of which are malignant. Gastritis cystica profunda (GCP) is a rare disease characterized by cystic dilatation of gastric glands into the submucosa and generally regarded as a precursor to tumor. Herein, we report a peculiar case in which an EWSR1-CREM-rearranged gastric mesenchymal tumor was admixed with GCP in a 64-year-old woman. All layers of the gastric wall were invaded, although no lymph node or neural invasion, or tumoral vascular embol

Characterization of neuroendocrine tumors in heterozygous mutant MENX rats: a novel model of invasive medullary thyroid carcinoma.

Rats affected by the MENX syndrome spontaneously develop multiple neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) including adrenal, pituitary and thyroid gland neoplasms. MENX was initially reported to be inherited as a recessive trait and affected rats were found to be homozygous for the predisposing Cdkn1b mutation encoding p27. We here report that heterozygous MENX-mutant rats (p27+/mut) develop the same spectrum of NETs seen in the homozygous (p27mut/mut) animals but with slower progression. Consequently, p27+/mut rats have a significantly shorter lifespan compared with their wild-type (p27+/+) littermates.

CT AND MRI FEATURES OF CAROTID BODY PARAGANGLIOMAS IN 16 DOGS.

Carotid body tumors (paragangliomas) arise from chemoreceptors located at the carotid bifurcation. In imaging studies, this neoplasm may be confused with other neck neoplasms such as thyroid carcinoma. The purpose of this retrospective, cross-sectional study was to describe computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of confirmed carotid body tumors in a multi-institutional sample of dogs. A total of 16 dogs met inclusion criteria (14 examined using CT and two with MRI). The most common reason for imaging was a palpable cervical mass or respiratory signs (i.e

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the extrahepatic bile duct: case report and literature review.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the extrahepatic bile duct is rare, and only 22 cases have been reported. Only two of these were large-cell NEC (LCNEC); the vast majority were small-cell NEC. Here, we report a third case of LCNEC of the extrahepatic bile duct. A 76-year-old male presented to a local hospital with painless jaundice. Imaging studies revealed a tumor at the hepatic hilum. The patient underwent right hepatic lobectomy, bile duct resection, and cholecystectomy. The resection specimen showed a 5.0-cm invasive neoplasm involving the hilar bile ducts and surrounding soft tissue. His

Image-guided thoracoscopic resection of thoracic dumbbell nerve sheath tumors.

BACKGROUND: Surgical removal of dumbbell nerve sheath tumors (NSTs) remains challenging because these neoplasms occupy ≥ 2 spinal and extraspinal spaces. The presence of intraspinal extension, tumor dimension, and/or its location within the thoracic cavity have previously made the resection of these types of neoplasms difficult. OBJECTIVE: To describe the feasibility of performing minimally invasive thoracoscopic surgery, as facilitated by an image guidance system (IGS), to achieve gross total resection of select dumbbell NSTs located in the thoracic spine. METHODS: The 3 cases presented her

[Malignancy predictive factors in pancreatic intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is a premalignant lesion of the pancreas. Its natural history is not well known. We evaluated the characteristics and predictor factors of malignancy of IPMN. PATIENTS AND METHOD: A retrospective analysis was performed in 88 patients diagnosed with IPMN between January 1997 and December 2008. The diagnosis was done by abdominal computed tomography (CT), pancreatic-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). Gender, age, symptoms, origin, location, CA 19.9 serum levels, size of tumours and nodules

Congenital thyroid hemiagenesis associated with follicular neoplasm: a case report.

Thyroid hemiagenesis is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the complete absence or underdevelopment of one thyroid lobe, resulting in the presence of only a single functional thyroid lobe. We present a unique case of a 34-year-old male patient who had congenital thyroid hemiagenesis and multi-nodular goiter. This case contributes to the existing medical literature by shedding light on the association between thyroid hemiagenesis and multi-nodular goiter. The patient experienced symptoms of right thyroid swelling and compression, and clinical examination revealed an enlarged right thyro

Synchronous Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm and Neuroendocrine Tumor Presenting as Pseudomyxoma Peritonei: A Case Report.

Synchronous primary neoplasms of the appendix are exceptionally rare. We report a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) and a well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor (NET) arising within the same appendix and presenting as pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP). A 44-year-old man undergoing staging for a solitary plasmacytoma of the left acetabulum was incidentally found on computed tomography (CT) to have extensive peritoneal mucinosis. Diagnostic laparoscopy confirmed diffuse PMP, and appendectomy revealed two synchronous appendiceal primaries: a perforated LAMN (pT4a pNX) and a 6 mm, grade

Malignant triton tumor of the bladder with fatal outcome: a rare case report.

Malignant triton tumors (MTTs) are a rare subtype of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors characterized by rhabdomyoblastic differentiation, often associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). Primary MTTs of the bladder are exceptionally uncommon, with few documented cases. We report a case of a 75-year-old male without neurofibromatosis type 1 history presenting with hematuria and urinary obstruction. Imaging revealed a 6.5 × 4 × 2 cm invasive bladder mass, and histopathology confirmed a high-grade spindle cell neoplasm with biphasic neurogenic (S100-positive) and rhabdomyoblastic (de

Oral T-cell-rich large B-cell lymphoma in a horse.

Lymphoma is the most common tumor of hematopoietic origin in horses. The course of the disease and clinical signs vary greatly, depending on tumor location and extent. The aim of this report is to describe the occurrence of T-cell-rich oral large B-cell lymphoma with marked local infiltration in a 25-year-old Crioula mare. The mare showed an increase in volume on the right side of its face, dyspnea, anorexia, and progressive weight loss. The clinical assessment showed that the lesion was located in the rostral and caudal sinuses and was markedly invasive to adjacent structures. The autopsy rev

Neuroendocrine Neoplasms of the Appendix: A Review of the Literature.

Appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasms (ANENs) comprise rare tumors of the appendix, mainly affecting young populations and characterized by a rather favorable prognosis. The aim of this review was to summarize the current knowledge on these neoplasms, focusing on the management and follow-up of such patients, which still remain under debate. ANENs account for 0.16-2.3% of appendectomies and are usually diagnosed incidentally. The histopathological diagnosis includes the immunohistochemical profile of the tumor in regard to synaptophysin and chromogranin A, as well as the Ki-67 index. The surgic

Extra- and intracranial dumbbell-shaped hemangiopericytoma.

Hemangiopericytomas are malignant tumors arising from pericytic cells and account for less than 1% of all vascular neoplasms. We report a rare case of an extra- and intracranial dumbbell-shaped hemangiopericytoma originating from the soft tissue of the neck and penetrating the skull base with invasion into the posterior cranial fossa. The 59-year-old female patient presented with a large pulsating neck mass and reported weakness, abnormal fatigue and headache. MRI revealed an inhomogeneously enhancing tumor and cerebral angiography showed intensive vascularization. Preoperative embolization wa

Lack of Epstein-Barr virus infection in cervical carcinomas.

CONTEXT: The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous microorganism strongly associated with lymphoproliferative disorders and a large number of human neoplasms, mainly undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma and Burkitt lymphoma. The viral DNA has been detected in other tumors, such as carcinomas from tonsil, salivary glands, and thymus, and malignancies of the female genital tract. Some authors have proposed that EBV could play a role in the carcinogenesis of cervical tumors; however, other studies do not support this hypothesis. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether EBV is associated with female

Pediatric liver neoplasms: a radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Only 1-2 % of all pediatric tumors occur in the liver. Two thirds of these tumors are malignant and almost all of the tumors cause clinical symptoms due to their mass effects. Besides the poor prognosis in most of the malignant tumors, for further treatment the origin and nature of the neoplasm has to be known. Due to the mostly unimpeded growth into the peritoneal cavity, the origin of the tumors is primarily often unclear and can non-invasively only be determined by advanced imaging techniques. The display of the macro- and microhistological key features of primary pediatric liver neoplasms,
