Solitary fibrous tumor of the pancreas in a patient with tumor duplicity: a case report.

This case report describes a 71-year-old male patient in whom a solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the pancreatic tail was incidentally discovered during staging of chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (B-CLL/SLL). The patient also had a history of excised malignant melanoma. SFT is a mesenchymal neoplasm characterized by NAB2::STAT6 gene fusion, STAT6 and CD34 immunohistochemical positivity, and unclear biological behavior. In this case, the tumor was a firm, well-circumscribed spindle cell lesion without cytologic atypia, necrosis, or significant mitotic activity, showing str

Nodal metastases in papillary thyroid microcarcinoma: prevalence and risk factors in 311 patients.

Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is generally considered low risk due to its favourable prognosis; however, in some cases, it presents aggressive features such as lymph node metastasis and extrathyroidal extension (ETE). The aim of this study was to investigate the pathological factors that influence prognosis in PTMC with the purpose of refining risk stratification based on our cohort of 311 cases. We performed a retrospective analysis based on anonymous data from 311 PTMC samples (tumours ≤ 1.0 cm in size) collected between 2016 and 2024. We examined several variables, including gende

Simultaneous Endometrial Cancer with Extensive Pelvic and Vulvar Endometriosis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Endometrial cancer represents the most prevalent malignant genital tract neoplasm in high-income countries and is the second most common cancer worldwide following cervical cancer. Endometriosis is a benign condition wherein endometrial glands and stroma are found outside the uterine cavity. CASE PRESENTATION: During a routine care and ultrasound examination of the uterus and adnexa of a 64-year-old woman, an increased endometrial thickness (22 mm) was noted. In 2023, according to ultrasound report, the patient underwent diagnostic curettage with immunohistochemistry, revealing a

Case report: Solitary mass of the sciatic nerve confirmed as a primary extranodal manifestation of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in a geriatric patient.

BACKGROUND: Neoplastic lesions affecting peripheral nerves are rare in the general population and, most often, are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors. However, a minority of lesions represent high-grade malignancies associated with a poor prognosis, such as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs). Very rarely, these tumors represent peripheral non-nerve sheath tumors (PNNSTs), such as hematological neoplasms that impair nerve function. These can be hard to distinguish from MPNSTs and other lesions arising from the nerve itself. In the present case report, we describe a rare case o

Cutaneous mastocytosis in 8 young dogs and review of literature.

Cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) is a rare condition in young dogs characterized by multicentric cutaneous proliferation of neoplastic mast cells. Clinical data from 8 dogs that met inclusion criteria (age of onset less than 1.5 years, greater than 3 lesions) were obtained via a standardized survey. Biopsy samples were classified by the Kiupel/Patnaik grading systems and analyzed for c-KIT mutations. The median age of onset was 6 months (range: 2-17 months). Dogs had 5 to more than 50 lesions characterized as nodules, plaques, and papules. Seven dogs were pruritic. Clinical staging in 2 dogs did no

Pro-Inflammatory Cytokine Gene Expression in Penile Cancer: Preliminary Studies.

Background and Objectives: Penile cancer is a rare neoplasm in developed countries with an incidence of 0.8/100,000 per male inhabitant. Despite the development of personalized medicine and multimodal treatment, the outcome of penile cancer treatment is insufficient. Our study aimed to assess the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines' mRNA such as interleukin 1-A (encoded by IL1A gene, alias IL-1A), interleukin 1-B (IL1B, IL-1B), interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL1RN, IL-1RN), interleukin 6 (IL6, IL-6), transforming growth factor β1 (TGFB1, TGFβ-1), and Interferon-gamma (INFG, INF-γ) in peni

Appendiceal Neuroendocrine Neoplasms: A Comprehensive Review.

Appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN) is the most common adult appendiceal malignant tumor, constituting 16% of gastrointestinal NENs. They are versatile tumors with varying morphology, immunohistochemistry, secretory properties, and cancer genomics. They are slow growing and clinically silent, to begin with, or present with features of nonspecific vague abdominal pain. Most acute presentations are attributed clinically to appendicitis, with most cases detected incidentally on pathology after an appendectomy. Approximately 40% of them present clinically with features of hormonal excess, wh

Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) presenting as a multilocular cystic intra-abdominal mass in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm described in humans, dogs, and cats. A hallmark of diagnosis for GISTs is positive immunohistochemical labelling with c-Kit (CD117). The differentiation of GIST from other mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract is pivotal to allow for initiation of appropriate treatment. In humans, cystic GIST has been described, though this has not been reported in dogs. In humans, the cystic form of GIST has been associated with a favorable prognosis. In the present paper, we report a case of multilocular cysti

Cytomorphological features of extramammary Paget's disease of the vulva in a patient with diagnoses of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix status post-chemoradiation, and high-grade vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia: The importance of basic principles.

BACKGROUND: Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is a rare neoplasm that commonly affects post-menopausal women. It usually presents in the anogenital area where apocrine sweat glands are abundant, most commonly in the vulva. The disease is characterised by slow growth and high local recurrence rates. Clinically, EMPD presents as well-demarcated erythematous lesions or plaques that may be ulcerated. Microscopically, it shows a group of atypical cells with abundant clear cytoplasm and nuclear pleomorphism. METHODS: We present the case of a 58-year-old female with a history of poorly differentia

Acinic cell carcinoma of the salivary gland in the adult and paediatric population: a survival analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acinic cell carcinoma (AcCC) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the salivary glands and generally considered to be a low-grade tumour. Surgical treatment is often curative, but a more aggressive high-grade variant has been associated with poorer survival and propensity for distant metastasis. No standard treatment guidelines exist and the approach to treatment is varied in the published series. The aim of this study is to present the experience of three major hospitals in Sydney, Australia, in treating AcCC of the salivary gland, with a focus on clinico-pathological features of diseas

Ovarian carcinoma in a 14-year-old with classical salt-wasting congenital adrenal hyperplasia and bilateral adrenalectomy.

A 14-year-old female with classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia because of 21-hydroxylase deficiency underwent bilateral adrenalectomy at 6 years of age as a result of poor hormonal control. Because the patient was adrenalectomized, extra adrenal androgen production was suspected. Imaging studies including pelvic ultrasound and pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were obtained to evaluate for adrenal rest tumors of the ovaries. Abdominal MRI was obtained to evaluate for residual adrenal tissue. A cystic lesion arising from her right ovary suspicious for ovarian neoplasm was noted on pel

Hodgkin Lymphoma: Diagnosis and Treatment.

Hodgkin lymphoma is a rare B-cell malignant neoplasm affecting approximately 9000 new patients annually. This disease represents approximately 11% of all lymphomas seen in the United States and comprises 2 discrete disease entities--classical Hodgkin lymphoma and nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma. Within the subcategorization of classical Hodgkin lymphoma are defined subgroups: nodular sclerosis, mixed cellularity, lymphocyte depletion, and lymphocyte-rich Hodgkin lymphoma. Staging of this disease is essential for the choice of optimal therapy. Prognostic models to identify patie

Sentinel lymph node sampling in gynaecological cancers: techniques and clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: The sentinel lymph node (SLN) is defined as the first node in the lymphatic basin that receives primary lymphatic flow. If the SLN is negative for metastatic disease, then other nodes are expected to be disease-free. Sentinel node techniques have received widespread application in the staging and treatment of many tumours including melanoma, breast and vulval cancers. The aim of this review is to evaluate the technique and the prognostic significance of the SLN concept in gynaecological malignancies. METHODS: A comprehensive computer literature search to identify relevant articles
