Acral vascular syndrome Lennert type T cell lymphoma-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acral vascular syndrome clinically presents as digital ischemia with Raynaud's phenomenon and erythromelalgia but can be rarely seen in the malignant condition. Patients may present pain, permanent digital blanching or cyanosis, and desquamation or ulceration of the fingers. Acral vascular syndrome is rarely associated with lymphoid neoplasm and is associated with smoking, autoimmune connective tissue diseases, and vasculitis. Here, we describe a 79-year-old female who was diagnosed with vitiligo and peripheral T cell lymphoma Lennert type stage 4 with anemia of chronic disease wit

[On micropenis, diagnosis and differential diagnoses].

Antigen Ki-67 is a non-histone nuclear protein, closely connected with cell proliferation. Determining Ki-67 allows for a quick and reliable evaluation of the growth fraction of the studied cell population. It serves as a marker of proliferative activity in neoplasms and other diseases with excessive cell proliferation such as psoriasis. Evaluation of Ki-67 expression in epidermal cells was performed in 10 individuals suffering from plaque psoriasis, before and after one of three methods of phototherapy: broadband UVB, narrowband UVB or PUVA. We observed increased Ki-67 antigen expression in p

Connective tissue growth factor-specific monoclonal antibody inhibits growth of malignant mesothelioma in an orthotopic mouse model.

Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive neoplasm with no particularly effective treatments. We previously reported that overexpression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF/CCN2) promotes mesothelioma growth, thus suggesting it as a novel molecular target. A human monoclonal antibody that antagonizes CTGF (FG-3019, pamrevlumab) attenuates malignant properties of different kinds of human cancers and is currently under clinical trial for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. This study reports the effects of FG-3019 on human mesothelioma in vitro and in vivo. We analyzed the effects of FG-3019

Necrotizing vasculitis with a polyarteritis nodosa-like pattern and selective immunoglobulin A deficiency: case report and review of the literature.

Selective immunoglobulin A deficiency (IgAD) is a primary immunodeficiency disease characterized by low levels (< 7 mg/dl) of serum immunoglobulin (Ig) A and normal serum levels of IgG and IgM. Patients with IgAD have increased risk for recurrent respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, autoimmune disease, asthma and allergy. A 26-year-old woman was admitted with sudden onset of painful cutaneous lesions on her lower extremities, pyrexia and arthromyalgia. Her medical history was remarkable for recurrent respiratory tract infections, self-limited episodes of acute diarrhea, atopy, splenome

Circadian rhythm chaos: a new breast cancer marker.

The most disappointing aspect of breast cancer treatment as a public health issue has been the failure of screening to improve mortality figures. Since treatment of late-stage cancer has indeed advanced, mortality can only be decreased by improving the rate of early diagnosis. From the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s, it was expected that thermography would hold the key to breast cancer detection, as surface temperature increases overlying malignant tumors had been demonstrated by thermographic imaging. Unfortunately, detection of the 1-3 degrees C thermal differences failed to bear out its promise

[Phyllodes tumor of the breast: diagnostic and therapeutic problems].

Phyllodes tumour (PT) is a rare breast tumor with mixed connective and epithelial components, which usually relapses topically after excision. Five patients with PT took part in the study (4 were positive for benign PT and one was positive for malignant PT at extemporary histological examination). The patients (3) with 3 cm or minus benign lesion had mass excision with a large resection of the surrounding mammary tissue. In the remaining patient with benign neoplasm (8 cm lesion) simple mastectomy was carried out. Finally the patient with malignant PT (5 cm lesion) underwent a simple mastectom

Disseminated peritoneal leiomyomatosis mimicking carcinomatosis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Disseminated Peritoneal Leiomyomatosis (DPL) is a rare benign proliferation of solid peritoneal lesions along the abdominopelvic cavity comprised of smooth muscle and connective tissue. Though hormonal and iatrogenic causes have been theorized, the exact etiology remains unknown. Most patients with DPL are frequently premenopausal with a history of myomectomy or prior hysterectomy. These patients can present asymptomatically or with abnormal uterine bleeding and abdominal discomfort. DPL is a rare entity with less than 150 cases reported in the literature, showcasi

Toxicity Tolerance in the Carcinogenesis of Environmental Cadmium.

Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental toxicant of worldwide public health significance. Diet is the main non-workplace Cd exposure source other than passive and active smoking. The intestinal absorption of Cd involves transporters for essential metals, notably iron and zinc. These transporters determine the Cd body burden because only a minuscule amount of Cd can be excreted each day. The International Agency for Research on Cancer listed Cd as a human lung carcinogen, but the current evidence suggests that the effects of Cd on cancer risk extend beyond the lung. A two-year bioassay demonstrated th

Fibrous Dysplasia Masquerading as Sternal Malignancy: A Rare and Challenging Presentation.

This case report presents a rare and challenging manifestation of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (FD), a skeletal developmental anomaly characterized by the proliferation of fibrous connective tissue intermingled with irregular bony trabeculae. While monostotic FD is more common, polyostotic FD can occur in the context of McCune-Albright syndrome, a multisystem developmental disorder. Our patient, a 55-year-old female with a history of diabetes, hypothyroidism, and dyslipidemia, presented with progressively worsening dysphagia, sternal pain, and swelling over three years. Improved U-Net based on cross-layer connection for pituitary adenoma MRI image segmentation.

Pituitary adenoma is a common neuroendocrine neoplasm, and most of its MR images are characterized by blurred edges, high noise and similar to surrounding normal tissues. Therefore, it is extremely difficult to accurately locate and outline the lesion of pituitary adenoma. To sovle these limitations, we design a novel deep learning framework for pituitary adenoma MRI image segmentation. Under the framework of U-Net, a newly cross-layer connection is introduced to capture richer multi-scale features and contextual information. At the same time, full-scale skip structure can reasonably utilize t

Interrelationships Between Serum Levels of Procalcitonin and Inflammatory Markers in Patients Who Visited a General Medicine Department.

Various laboratory markers of inflammation are utilized in general practice, but their clinical diagnostic significance is often ambiguous. In the present study, we determined the clinical significance of the examination of serum levels of procalcitonin (PCT) by comparing the PCT levels with the levels of other inflammatory markers, based on a retrospective review of 332 PCT-positive patients, including cases of bacterial infection (20.5%), non-specific inflammation (20.8%), neoplasm (9.9%), connective tissue diseases (8.4%), and non-bacterial infection (7.2%), were analyzed. The serum PCT lev

Thirteen Synchronous Multifocal Calcifying Epithelial Odontogenic Tumors (CEOT): Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT, Pindborg tumor) is a rare, benign, locally aggressive neoplasm of the jaws that accounts for approximately 1% of all odontogenic tumors. It was first defined by Pindborg in 1955 and has been reported approximately 350 times in the literature; 7 reported multiple (up to 4) synchronous lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report an individual with the largest number of CEOTs reported to date and provide a literature review of multifocal CEOT cases. RESULTS: A 30-year-old male presented to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of

Connective tissue growth factor produced by cancer‑associated fibroblasts correlates with poor prognosis in epithelioid malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive neoplasm for which effective treatments are lacking. We often encounter mesothelioma cases with a profound desmoplastic reaction, suggesting the involvement of cancer‑associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in mesothelioma progression. While the roles of CAFs have been extensively studied in other tumors and have led to the view that the cancer stroma contains heterogeneous populations of CAFs, their roles in mesothelioma remain unknown. We previously showed that connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), a secreted protein, is produced by both mesothelioma cells and

Retinocochleocerebral vasculopathy.

We report 10 patients with retinocochleocerebral vasculopathy and review the clinical and diagnostic considerations in previously reported patients with this uncommonly recognized disease. The clinical manifestations include acute and subacute multifocal and diffuse encephalopathic symptoms, hearing loss, and visual loss attributable to microangiopathy affecting the arterioles of the brain, retina, and cochlea. Diagnosis is facilitated by demonstration of retinal arteriolar occlusions without uveitis or keratoconjunctivitis, mid- to low-frequency unilateral or bilateral sensorineural hearing l

Connective tissue growth factor contributes to resistance to anti-angiogenic therapies in renal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is predominantly treated with anti-angiogenic therapies (AATs), such as sunitinib and axitinib. While these therapies initially improve outcomes, resistance frequently emerges, limiting long-term efficacy. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying AAT resistance is essential to optimize treatment strategies. METHODS: To identify factors involved in AAT resistance, we performed integrated transcriptomic and proteomic analyses on ccRCC cell lines subjected to either transient AAT treatment or with established acquired resistance. Clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes of vertebral lesions associated with tumor-induced osteomalacia: report of 16 patients and review of the literature.

UNLABELLED: Vertebral tumors in patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) have a low diagnostic rate and poor postoperative outcomes. The application of 68 Ga-DOTATATE-PET/CT significantly increased the detection rate. Compared with tumor curettage, segmental resection was recommended as the preferred surgical type due to its high recovery rate. PURPOSE: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is an acquired hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, and surgery is the first-line therapy. Most TIO tumors are found in the bones of the appendicular skeleton, cranium, and paranasal sinuses but rarely in the v

Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor Involving the Head and Neck: A Report of Five Cases with FGFR1 Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization Analysis.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a rare neoplasm; however, it is the most common cause of tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO), a paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by renal phosphate wasting and hypophosphatemia. A subset of PMTs harbours an FGFR1 translocation although this alteration has not been demonstrated in PMT involving a head and neck site. We present a series of five PMTs involving the head and neck and demonstrate the diagnostic utility of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for detecting FGFR1 translocations. Patients' age and sex, tumor location, original diagnosis, t
