The development of virtual reality technology has provided psychological research with powerful tools by presenting stimuli and constructing scenarios, and the combination of VR and neuroimaging techniques begins to provide particularly interesting insights into the experience of virtual events and scenarios, similar to real life. Here we combined VR with EEG technology, so to record and analyze EEG microstates evoked by VR experiences. Our findings suggest that microstates A, B, C, and D reflect cognitive activities during VR experience, while microstate E specifically corresponds to immersio

Visual perception declines with age. Perceptual deficits may originate not only in the optical system serving vision but also in the neural machinery processing visual information. Since homologies between monkey and human vision permit extrapolation from monkeys to humans, data from young, middle aged and old monkeys were analyzed to show age-related changes in the neuronal activity in the inferotemporal cortex, which is critical for object and shape vision. We found an increased neuronal response latency, and a decrease in the stimulus selectivity in the older animals and suggest that these

Vigabatrin (VGB), an irreversible inhibitor of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transaminase, is approved as adjunct treatment of refractory partial seizures as well as infantile spasms. Although VGB has been proven to be effective, its use is limited by the risk of retinopathy and associated peripheral visual field defects. This review describes and analyzes current literature related to potential pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying VGB-mediated cellular toxicity. Animal data suggest that GABA mediates neural excitotoxicity. The amino acid taurine is concentrated in retinal cells, and defici

This paper presents a method of using feature searching algorithm based on maximal divergence value to get the optimized feature combinations at different dimensions from feature space. Feature space is obtained through wavelet transform on ECG beat. Then the feature vector is determined by analyzing the changes of divergence value of those optimized feature combinations along with the dimensions. BP artificial neural network is trained by the feature vector and four types of ECG beats(normal beat, left bundle branch block beat, right bundle branch block beat and paced beat) obtained from MIT-

Thirty-four consecutive patients with cervical disc herniation underwent surgical treatment at Burdenko Neurosurgical Institute. The clinical signs and diagnostic findings as well as surgical results were analyzed. Predominance of direct spinal cord involvement, characteristic changes in the anterior spinal artery and afferent vessels confirm the fact that cervical disk herniation causes vascular changes to take place, which in turn affect neural structures. Microsurgical techniques with maximum preservation of bone structures and vertebral endplates is mandatory. If multiple disk herniations

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine disorder characterized by metabolic abnormalities and chronic hyperglycemia, caused by insulin deficiency (Type I) or resistance (Type II). It affects various tissues differently, and its complications extend beyond classical targets, such as the kidneys and eyes, to lesser-studied organs, including the lungs. Understanding tissue-specific damage is crucial for effective disease management and the prevention of complications.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the histopathological and immunohistochemical effects of diabetic lung fibrosis us

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provides an efficient way to analyze the functional connectivity between brain regions. A comprehensive understanding of brain functionality requires a unified description of multi-scale layers of neural structure. However, existing brain network modeling methods often simplify this property by averaging Blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signals at the brain region level for fMRI-based analysis with the assumption that BOLD signals are homogeneous within each brain region, which ignores the heterogeneity of voxels within each Region

For limb apraxia-a heterogeneous disorder of higher motor cognition following stroke-an enduring debate has arisen regarding the existence of dissociating neural correlates for finger and hand gestures in the left hemisphere. We re-assessed this question asking whether previous attempts analyzing pooled samples of patients with deficits in only one and patients with deficits in both imitation types might have led to systematically biased results. We conducted frequentist and Bayesian, voxelwise, and regionwise lesion symptom mappings on (i) the full sample (N = 96) in which all patients with h

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia and cognitive decline, while its pathological mechanism remains unclear. Tauopathies is one of the most widely accepted hypotheses. In this study, the molecular network was established and the expression pattern of the core gene was analyzed, confirming that the dysfunction of protein folding and degradation is one of the critical factors for AD.
METHODS: This study analyzed 9 normal people and 22 AD patients' microarray data obtained from GSE1297 in Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. The matrix decomposition analy

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder often associated with cognitive dysfunctions, including a high occurrence of deficits in visuoperceptual skills. The neural underpinnings of these visuoperceptual deficits are not fully understood. We used steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) to investigate possible alterations in the synchronization of neural activity in the occipital cortex of children with NF1.
METHODS: SSVEPs were measured using electroencephalography and compared between children with NF1 (n = 28) and neurotypical controls (n = 28) aged between 4

OBJECTIVE: Lumbosacral lipomas (LSLs), one form of closed spinal dysraphism, are congenital disorders of the terminal spinal cord (SC). Delayed neurologic deterioration often occurs in the subsequent developmental course of the patient. Identifying the cellular and molecular factors underlying the progressive damage to neural structures is a prerequisite for developing treatment strategies for LSLs.
METHODS: Nine LSL specimens obtained from the SC/lipoma interface during surgical resection were examined. Normal SC tissue served as a control. Clinical characteristics were obtained, and spinal

PURPOSE: Hyperventilation (HV) is a commonly used electroencephalogram activation method.
METHODS: We analyzed EEG recordings in 22 normal subjects and 22 patients with focal epilepsy of unknown cause. We selected segments before (PRE), during (HYPER), and 5 minutes after (POST) HV. To analyze the neural generators of EEG signal, we used standard low-resolution electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA software). We then computed EEG lagged coherence, an index of functional connectivity, between 19 regions of interest. A weighted graph was built for each band in every subject, and characteristic pa

The pigmented ciliary epithelium (PCE) of mammalian eye harbors resident population of stem cells that lie in apposition with endothelial cells which release vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) that may influence the fate and function of these stem cells in ways that remain unclear. We examined the role of VEGF in proliferation of PCE stem cells and expression of Notch, Jagged, N-Cadherin and β-Catenin which are known to maintain proliferation state of neural stem cells. We cultured human PCE cells obtained from 12-20 weeks old fetal eyes. The neurospheres were analyzed for the prolifera

Intestinal microorganisms affect the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) and, therefore, are a new research focus of PD treatment. Type 3 resistant starch from Canna edulis (Ce-RS3) regulates gut microbes and has prebiotic properties. The effects include decreased blood lipids, weight, and inflammation, as well as increased glycolipid metabolism. There are few reports on the use of prebiotics alone in the treatment of Parkinson's. In this study, based on the gut-brain axis, the pharmacological effects and related mechanisms of Ce-RS3 on PD were studied by analyzing intestinal bacteria and

Detecting multicomponent gases over extensive concentration ranges with laser spectroscopy faces challenges of complex configurations, intricate spectral analysis, and reduced accuracy. Neural networks offer transformative potential for advancing laser spectroscopy by facilitating real-time optimization and automation of experimental processes. Here, we report a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) spectroscopic system enhanced by a feedforward neural network (FNN) algorithm. FMCW encodes gas absorption spectra into optical signals, enabling both spatial localization and spectroscopic an
