Proprioceptive perturbations of stability during gait.

Through recent studies, the role of proprioceptors in reactions to perturbations during gait has been finally somewhat better understood. The input from spindle afferents has been investigated with tendon taps, vibration and other forms of muscle stretches, including some resembling natural perturbations (stumbling, slips, and ankle inversions). It was found that activation of spindle afferents produces short-latency response (SLR), consistent with a fast spinal pathway. These reflexes induce relatively minor activation in the stretched muscles. A central question is whether stretch reflexes c

Alzheimer's disease Braak Stage progressions: reexamined and redefined as Borrelia infection transmission through neural circuits.

Brain structure in health is a dynamic energized equation incorporating chemistry, neuronal structure, and circuitry components. The chemist … r 50-80 years, tissue damage late in life (shingles) demonstrates the "march of the infection" down neural pathways (dermatomes) as linear areas of painful blisters loaded with virus from a childhood infection. Amalgamation of Zoster with Rabies models produces a hybrid model to explain all of the Braak Stages of Alzheimer's disease under a new paradigm, namely " …

Distribution of neuropeptide FF-like immunoreactivity in the brain of Dermophis mexicanus (Amphibia; Gymnophiona): comparison with FMRFamide immunoreactivity.

Neuropeptide FF (NPFF) is an FMRFamide-related peptide widely distributed in the mammalian brain. NPFF immunohistochemistry labeled cell bodies in a few locations and dense fiber networks throughout the brain. Recently, the distribution of NPFF immunoreactive (NPFF-ir) cells and fibers in the brain of anuran and urodele amphibians was studied and, as in mammals, significant species differences were noted. To further assess general and derived features of the NPFF-containing neuron system in amphibians, we have investigated the distribution of NPFF-ir cell bodies and fibers in the brain of the

Cellular basis of pontine ponto-geniculo-occipital wave generation and modulation.

1. Pontogeniculooccipital (PGO) waves are recorded during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep from the pontine reticular formation. 2. PGO wave-like field potentials can also be recorded in many other parts of the brain in addition to the pontine reticular formation, but their distribution is different in different species. Species differences are due to variation in species-specific postsynaptic target sites of the pontine PGO generator. 3. The triggering neurons of the pontine PGO wave generator are located within the caudolateral peribrachial and the locus subceruleus areas. 4. The transferring

Central projections of the parapineal organ of the adult rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Neural connections of the small parapineal organ of the adult rainbow trout were experimentally investigated by using a lipophilic carbocyanine dye as a tracer. The dye was applied to the parapineal organ, to the pineal organ, or to the left or right habenular ganglion. The parapineal organ mainly projected via a coarse parapineal tract to a conspicuous neuropil in the rostrodorsal part of the left habenular ganglion. A small accessory parapineal tract projecting to the right habenular ganglion was also found in some animals. No pineal afferents were observed in the parapineal, nor was any neu

Effects of lesions of different parts of the septo-hippocampal system in primates on learning and retention of information acquired before or after surgery.

Data from a large series of experiments on marmosets with lesions of the septal/diagonal band area (DB), fornix or CA1 area of the hippocampus are analysed in terms of retention of information learned before surgery, acquisition of new information and retention of information acquired after surgery. It is shown that although all three lesions impair acquisition of a specific type of new information, lesions of CA1 result in a severe retrograde amnesia but no forgetting of that type of information adequately acquired after surgery, whereas lesions of the DB do not cause retrograde amnesia but d

A possible feline model for human blepharospasm.

'Benign essential blepharospasm' is a human eyelid disorder of unknown aetiology characterized by involuntary, bilateral, and disabling spasmodic contracture of the orbicularis oculi muscle. Treatments are frequently disappointing. Here we report what might be a first step toward developing an animal model for exploring mechanisms of the disorder and potential treatments. We surgically implanted stimulating electrodes into brain areas known to supply input to the lateral division of the facial nerve nucleus to induce blinking by electrical stimulation. Single-pulse stimuli at or near the facia

Corticofugal actions on lemniscal neurons of the cuneate, gracile and lateral cervical nuclei of the cat.

Extracellular records were made from single identified lemniscal neurons of the cell-cluster regions of the cuneate and gracile nuclei, and of the lateral cervical nucleus, in pentobarbitone-anaesthetized cats. Forepaw, hind paw or face regions of the contralateral Sm I cortex were identified by recording through an inserted microelectrode which was then used for stimulation. The effect of a double cortical shock or train of shocks was usually inhibition: occasionally facilitation was observed, or mixed effects with facilitation preceding inhibition. Effects were seen in about half the cells s

Auditory brainstem in the mole (Mogera): nuclear configurations and the projections to the inferior colliculus.

Anatomical organization of the central auditory system in the mole was studied at the lower brainstem levels. The cyto-, myelo-, and chemoarchitectures were examined in Nissl, myelin, and acetylcholinesterase stained materials, and then the origins of the ascending afferents to the inferior colliculus (IC) were identified by injecting wheatgerm agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) into the unilateral IC and processing the tissue according to the standard retrograde tracing techniques. The results indicate that the auditory nuclei and pathways in the lower brainstem of the

Embryonic development of axon pathways in the Drosophila CNS. II. Behavior of pioneer growth cones.

We have identified the neurons that pioneer the major CNS axon tracts in the Drosophila embryo and determined their trajectory and fasciculation choices using serial section electron microscopy. Although Drosophila pioneer neurons make choices similar to those of their grasshopper homologs, there are interesting differences that reflect the much smaller nervous system size and the much faster rate of development characteristic of Drosophila. For example, where 2 longitudinal tracts are pioneered independently in grasshopper, only one is formed in Drosophila. This change is due to a change in f

Rhythms of serum melatonin in patients with spinal lesions at the cervical, thoracic or lumbar region.

The neural pathway essential for the diurnal rhythm of serum melatonin was studied in humans. Blood samples from 17 patients with chronic lesions of cervical (n = 8), low thoracic or lumbar (n = 9) spinal cord were collected at 0200, 0400, 1000 and 1400 h of their normal light-dark cycle. Blood samples were also collected from eight control subjects at 0200 and 1400 h. No special treatment of food, drug or photoperiod was implemented. Serum melatonin was extracted by dichloromethane and determined by radioimmunoassay. In patients with cervical spinal lesions (C3-C7), it was found that serum me

Pathophysiological aspects of dysphoric states.

Dysphoric states have been of particular interest for a long time since they occur not only in patients with psycho-organic syndromes but also in those with manic-depressive disease. This paper discusses some aspects of dysphoria from the pathophysiological point of view. Data mostly derived from epileptic patients indicate the critical role the limbic system plays in the control of emotions. It is suggested that functional alterations within the limbic system and its manifold interconnections to other parts of the central nervous system are responsible for characteristic pathophysiological ph

[The character of cortico-subcortical relations in neurotic patients (according to EEG findings)].

Electroencephalographic examinations have been carried out in 179 neurotic patients. Five types of the EEG have been identified depending on the nature of cortico-subcortical interrelations. Types 1 and 2 are normal variants; types 3, 4, and 5 are abnormal. It has been ascertained that in patients with hysteria normal EEG types occur less commonly while irritation of the posterior hypothalamus is much more frequent as compared to neurasthenic patients. It has been established that an injury or neuroinfection are responsible for pathologic EEG alterations.

Response of cerebellum to stimulation of telencephalon in the catfish (Ictalurus nebulosus).

In the siluroid teleost Ictalurus nebulosus, averaged evoked potentials and unit responses were recorded from various parts of the cerebellum following electrical stimulation applied to the telencephalon. Responses are most readily evoked in the cerebellum when area dorsalis pars centralis (Dc), a group of scattered large cells in the middle of the telencephalon, is stimulated. The configuration of the evoked field potentials differs according to the rate of stimulation. At a relatively low repetition rate, 0.5/s or lower, the response takes the shape of a positive wave, Pmol2, peaking at abou

A neuroanatomical study on the organization of the central antennal pathways in insects. III. Neuroanatomical characterization of physiologically defined response types of deutocerebral neurons in Periplaneta americana.

1. Single unimodal (olfactory) or multimodal (olfactory and mechanosensory) neurons in the antennal lobe of the deutocerebrum of the American cockroach were characterized functionally by microelectrode recording, and their morphological types and positions in the brain were established by dye injection. Thus individual, physiologically identified neurons of known shape could be mapped in reference to the areas of soma groups, glomeruli, tracts and their projection regions in the brain. 2. All of these neurons send processes to deutocerebral glomeruli, i.e., the regions in which the axons of an

Topography of the cortico-cortical connections from the striate cortex in the cat.

Injections of radioactive amino acids were placed in regions of the striate cortex of cat representing central, intermediate and peripheral parts of the horizontal meridian and also in regions of lower and upper visual field representations near the vertical meridian. The study of cortico-cortical connections arising from these points revealed several retinotopic arrangements in the distribution of these connections and, it is argued, of the extrastriate cortical recipient areas themselves. On retinotopic distribution exists along the banks of the middle suprasylvian sulcus, in which lower and
