Retrospective observational studies in ultra-rare sarcomas: A consensus paper from the Connective Tissue Oncology Society (CTOS) community of experts on the minimum requirements for the evaluation of activity of systemic treatments.

BACKGROUND: In ultra-rare sarcomas (URS) the conduction of prospective, randomized trials is challenging. Data from retrospective observational studies (ROS) may represent the best evidence available. ROS implicit limitations led to poor acceptance by the scientific community and regulatory authorities. In this context, an expert panel from the Connective Tissue Oncology Society (CTOS), agreed on the need to establish a set of minimum requirements for conducting high-quality ROS on the activity of systemic therapies in URS. METHODS: Representatives from > 25 worldwide sarcoma reference centre

Cryoglobulins, Cryofibrinogens, and Cold Agglutinins in Cold Urticaria: Literature Review, Retrospective Patient Analysis, and Observational Study in 49 Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Cryoproteins, such as cryoglobulins, cryofibrinogens and cold agglutinins, precipitate at low temperatures or agglutinate erythrocytes and dissolve again when warmed. Their pathogenetic and diagnostic importance in cold urticaria (ColdU) is unclear. In this study, we aimed to characterize the prevalence of cryoproteins in patients with ColdU. METHODS: We conducted 3 analyses: i) a systematic review and meta-analysis of published data using an adapted version of the Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tool for case series, ii) a retrospective analysis of 293 ColdU patien

Periodontitis and gestational diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is glucose intolerance with first onset during pregnancy and is associated with serious maternal and fetal complications. The etiology of GDM is not well understood, but systemic inflammation effects on insulin signaling and glucose metabolism is suspected. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that induces local and host immune responses and has been evaluated for a potential role in development of GDM. Results from studies evaluating the association between periodontitis and GDM are mixed. We performed a systematic review and

Correlation between right-to-left shunt and sudden sensorineural hearing loss: protocol for a case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a neurological and otolaryngological emergency during which rapid diagnosis and early treatment are of great importance. Clinical experience indicates that a considerable number of patients with SSNHL have concurrent right-to-left shunt (RLS). With limited reports, the association between SSNHL and RLS is yet unclear and there is a need for large observational studies to explore their latent relationship. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This proposed study is a prospective, observational case-control study. A total of 194 eligible par

Effects of preoperative mildly elevated pulmonary artery systolic pressure on the incidence of perioperative adverse events undergoing thoracoscopic lobectomy: an observational cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Echocardiography provides a non-invasive estimation of pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) and is the first diagnostic test for pulmonary hypertension. Recent studies have demonstrated that PASP of more than 30 mm Hg related to increased mortality and morbidity. However, perioperative risks and management for patients with mildly elevated PASP are not well established. This study aims to explore the association between mildly elevated PASP and perioperative adverse outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This will be a retrospective cohort study conducted at Shanghai Pulmonary Hos

Feasibility of a New Lung Ultrasound Protocol to Determine the Extent of Lung Injury in COVID-19 Pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Lung ultrasound (LUS) scanning is useful to diagnose and assess the severity of pulmonary lesions during COVID-19-related ARDS (CoARDS). A conventional LUS score is proposed to measure the loss of aeration during CoARDS. However, this score was validated during the pre-COVID-19 era in patients with ARDS in the ICU and does not consider the differences with CoARDS. An alternative LUS method is based on grading the percentage of extension of the typical signs of COVID-19 pneumonia on the lung surface (LUSext). RESEARCH QUESTION: Is LUSext feasible in patients with COVID-19 at the on

National, clinical cohort study of late effects among survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: the ALL-STAR study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: More than 90% of patients diagnosed with childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) today will survive. However, half of the survivors are expected to experience therapy-related chronic or late occurring adverse effects, reducing quality of life. Insight into underlying risk trajectories is warranted. The aim of this study is to establish a Nordic, national childhood ALL survivor cohort, to be investigated for the total somatic and psychosocial treatment-related burden as well as associated risk factors, allowing subsequent linkage to nation-wide public health registers. Pre Versus Post Implementation of a Pharmacologic Antishivering Protocol During Targeted Temperature Management Following Cardiac Arrest.

BACKGROUND: Targeted temperature management (TTM) is endorsed by various guidelines to improve neurologic outcomes following cardiac arrest. Shivering, a consequence of hypothermia, can counteract the benefits of TTM. Despite its frequent occurrence, consensus guidelines provide minimal guidance on the management of shivering. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a pharmacologic antishivering protocol in patients undergoing TTM following cardiac arrest on the incidence of shivering. METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort study at a large academic medical center of ad

Haematoma block versus sedation for manipulating distal radius fractures in the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures commonly require manipulation in the emergency department. Procedural sedation is frequently used but is resource-intensive and associated with potential adverse events. Haematoma block may offer a practical alternative, particularly in busy emergency departments, but its comparative efficacy and safety are uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether haematoma block provides a comparable procedural success rate to procedural sedation, and whether there is a difference in the likelihood of adverse events, in adult patients undergoing manipulation of distal rad
