Determination of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in different particulate matter size fractions of outdoor air samples in Madrid during the lockdown.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies described the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in outdoor air particulate matter (PM) in urban areas of northern Italy and USA. The city of Madrid was heavily affected by COVID-19 during March-June 2020. Also, this city usually displays high concentrations of PM under several atmospheric situations. This is mandatory to assess the presence of viral RNA in PM, as an indicator of epidemic recurrence. Our study was aimed at investigating the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in outdoor air samples (on PM10, PM2.5 and PM1). METHODS: Six samples of PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 were collected be…

Sargassum horneri extract containing mojabanchromanol attenuates the particulate matter exacerbated allergic asthma through reduction of Th2 and Th17 response in mice.

Airborne particulate matter (PM) has become a serious health issue causing pulmonary diseases such as asthma. Due to the side effects and non-specificity of conventional drugs, there is a need to develop natural-product-based alternative treatments. Sargassum horneri is a brown alga shown to have anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic effects. Thus, we sought to determine whether ethanol extract of Sargassum horneri (SHE) mitigates the effect of PM exposure on asthma development. To establish a mouse model of asthma, BALB/c mice were sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA, 10 μg) and chall…

Association of fine particulate matter exposure with acute noncardiovascular critical illnesses and in-hospital outcomes in patients receiving intensive cardiac care.

BACKGROUND: The effect of short-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on the incidence of acute noncardiovascular critical illnesses (ANCIs) and clinical outcomes is unknown in patients with acute cardiovascular diseases. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study in 2337 admissions to an intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) from June 2016 to May 2017. We used the 2-day average PM2.5 concentration before ICCU admission to estimate the individual exposure level, and patients were divided into 3 groups according to the concentration tertiles. Major ANCI was defined as the composite of…

Non-Negligible Stack Emissions of Noncriteria Air Pollutants from Coal-Fired Power Plants in China: Condensable Particulate Matter and Sulfur Trioxide.

In this study, we investigated the emission characteristics of condensable particulate matter (CPM) and sulfur trioxide (SO3) simultaneously through ammonia-based/limestone-based wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) from four typical coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) by conducting field measurements. Stack emissions of filterable particulate matter (FPM) all meet the Chinese ultralow emission (ULE) standards, whereas CPM concentrations are prominent (even exceed 10 mg/Nm3 from two CFPPs). We find that NH4+ and Cl- increase markedly through the ammonia-based WFGD, and SO42- is generally the main i…

Genotoxicity assessment of particulate matter emitted from heavy-duty diesel-powered vehicles using the in vivo Vicia faba L. micronucleus test.

Diesel exhaust particulate matter (PM) can have an impact on the environment due to its chemical constitution. A large number of substances such as organic compounds, sulfates, nitrogen derivatives and metals are adsorbed to the particles and desorption of these contaminants could promote genotoxic effects. The objective of this study was to assess the in vivo genotoxicity profile of diesel exhaust PM from heavy-duty engines. Extracts were obtained through leaching with pure water and chemical extraction using three organic solvents (dichloromethane, hexane, and acetone). The in vivo Vicia fab…

Fine Particulate Matter and Sulfur Dioxide Coexposures Induce Rat Lung Pathological Injury and Inflammatory Responses Via TLR4/p38/NF-κB Pathway.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) are 2 common air pollutants, but their toxicological effects of coexposure are still not fully clear. In this study, SO2 exposure (5.6 mg/m3) couldn't cause obvious inflammatory responses in rat lungs. The PM2.5 exposure (1.5 mg/kg body weight) increased inflammatory cell counts in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and some inflammation damage. Importantly, SO2 and PM2.5 (1.5, 6.0, and 24.0 mg/kg) coexposure induced pathological and ultrastructural damage and raised inflammatory cells in BALF compared with the control. Also, they signi…

Mutagenicity and DNA adduct formation of PAH, nitro-PAH, and oxy-PAH fractions of atmospheric particulate matter from São Paulo, Brazil.

Urban particulate matter (UPM) contributes to lung cancer incidence. Here, we have studied the mutagenic activity and DNA adduct-forming ability of fractionated UPM extractable organic matter (EOM). UPM was collected with a high-volume sampler in June 2004 at two sites, one at street level adjacent to a roadway and the other inside a park within the urban area of the city of São Paulo, Brazil. UPM was extracted using dichloromethane, and the resulting EOM was separated by HPLC to obtain PAH, nitro-PAH, and oxy-PAH fractions which were tested for mutagenicity with the Salmonella strains TA98 an…

Residential Proximity to NPL Superfund Sites and High Particulate Matter Exposure Is Associated with Increased Likelihood of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is associated with disadvantaged neighborhoods and at-risk groups. Less is known about how environmental exposures drive TNBC. This study assesses associations of Superfund (SF) site and poor air quality exposure with TNBC. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed for patients with stage I to IV breast cancer treated between 2005 and 2018. SF locations were geocoded and compared with patient addresses to determine proximity. Proximity was defined as <4 miles to the nearest site. Daily maximum particulate matter (PM2.5) measurements were so…

Particulate matter promotes vascular calcification via the regulation of miR-26a-5p-mediated autophagy in calcifying vascular cells and Apoe-/- mice.

Vascular calcification is hallmark of cardiovascular disease, which has a high morbidity and mortality. A growing body of evidence suggests that vascular calcification has been linked to particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure. However, the molecular mechanism of how PM2.5 promotes vascular calcification remains unclear. This study demonstrated that PM2.5 exposure promoted calcium phosphate deposition, accompanied by autophagy activation in calcifying vascular cells. Moreover, PM2.5 treatment upregulated autophagy-related proteins and aggravated calcium nodule formation in calcifying vascular cell…

Regional Disparities in Stroke Hospitalization and Mortality Associated with Long-Term Fine Particulate Matter Exposure: A Nationwide Ecological Study in Spain.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability globally, with considerable regional heterogeneity in incidence and mortality reflecting differences in classical vascular risk factors and environmental determinants. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is an established modifiable environmental risk factor, yet its association with regional stroke disparities remains understudied in Mediterranean European contexts. We examined regional differences in stroke hospitalization and mortality and their ecological associations with long-term air-pollution exposure across Spai…
